Let's do it. I don't know what this Tubby Smith guy has to do with Gopher hoops going forward

Technically he has a lot to do with the next few years. His recruits are still here....guy named Dre Hollins for one. Good player.

Parski, technically Tubby is gone.

Tubby, Tubby, Tubby, Tubby. You are getting boring. He is gone, let him go. Come along with the rest of us to reality. You do have a lot to add to GH.

Stalker.

Any organization is only as good as their respect for their history. Tubby did many good things for Gopher Men's Basketball. As we move forward to Pitino Play, we do ourselves no favors to act like Tubby Time never happened.

Mosr of us are not saying Tubby Time never happened. What is important is that these guys are now Coach Pitino's guys. Let's leave it at that.

For every Dre Hollins comment there is an Oto or Mav to throw back at ya...

Some of Tubby's recruits may still be here, but any potential success they have will be difficult to attribute to Coach Smith. I mean, will Tubby get credit for Mo Walker if he loses 60lbs and becomes a serviceable big man? Or if Eliot replaces some of his baby chub with muscles? If Tubby stayed here, we could safely assume it would have been business as usual. Dre would have been out of position, Mo would have been fat, and Eliot would have been weak. If we are a competent offensive team next year, it pretty much verifies that Tubby simply runs an out-of-date offense.

It really upsets me how Pitino has been able to get through to these players in such a short amount of time and diagnose their deficiencies. It really shows that Tubby was either coasting, or simply doesn't know how to motivate young men anymore.

Pitino's public relations skills are outstanding. In the 45 days or so, Coach P. has been here, I haven't personally witnessed any marked improvement in any of the players. I'm waiting to see what they will look like when they roll the balls out on the court. Unless I'm missing something, all the best players will be Orlando's recruits.

Mo dropping 20+ is a start (albeit he probably started before Pitino was hired). There is absolutely no way he would be that committed to losing weight if he knew that he was going to play in Tubby's lazy O.

This is actually a fair point. I guess I am assuming what I hear is true, and my conclusions are based on speculation. I have no doubt that the best players next will be Tubby's recruits (namely the Hollins'), but I guess my point is that it appears to me that Pitino may be suited to get more out of them than Tubby ever was. I'm also not willing to completely blame Tubby for it all...maybe the only way to get Dre to come here was to play him at the point to try and groom him for the next level. But, Pitino seems to realize his main job is to win games at THIS level. We'll see, though...

Personally I think Mo's lack of development has more to do with having suffered a devastating injury than Tubby's incompetence.

Oto wasn't bad his freshman year, his stats were similar to Austin Hollins' freshman stats. I haven't given up hope on him. Mav was a spring recruit, not so much poor recruiting as not having a lot of options left when Cobbs transferred in the spring and Cory Joseph committed to Texas late in the game, and Tubby seemed to learn his lesson there as he was still recruiting other point guards in addition to Tyus Jones for 2014.

I guess all you have at this point is hope that there won't be any marked improvement. My hope is that there will be. Once Elliott is able to beat the coach in a pushup contest, that'll be a start.

If you and MadtownGopher want to nominate Coach P. for the HOF after his first 45 days on the job, so be it.

"My hope is that there will be [marked improvement]" is what I wrote. That's a hall of fame nomination? Why would a Gopher fan not hope for the best? Honest to god, I don't for the life of me understand your bitterness.

CBS: New Faces, New Places: Tubby Smith, Texas Tech

Prognosis for success: First, I think Texas Tech did a good job in getting Smith. He's a national name and has a winning reputation -- there aren't many candidates the Red Raiders could have gotten who were better than Smith. With that said, I don't foresee too many winning seasons for Smith in Lubbock. It's a very difficult rebuilding job. He wasn't overly effective at getting top-notch prospects to Minnesota, even in-state ones, and I don't think it will change at Texas Tech. It's just not easy to get players to Lubbock. Given the fact that Smith isn't much of a recruiting grinder, that probably won't change in the next couple of years.

Go Gophers!!

Tubby must have a new criteria for his recruits. He just picked up a kid who won state championship in high jump. He has another PG from CA to visit this weekend. Like I have said before, he has learned from his mistakes in MN. He loading his PG position. None of them is ranked but believed to be very athletic.

Go tell anyone that gives a sh!t.

I hope Pitino does well and I hope all these positive reports, but after being burned by Brewster it's tough to be completely optimistic

Ummm, sounds just like Wally Ellenson and Mav Ahanmisi. He recruits athletes. Will he try to recruit any shooters? His best player for 2, arguably 3 seasons was Blake Hoffarber, a player recruited by Dan Monson and one whom he most certainly would never have recruited himself.

I agree. Although, he made the NCAA Tourney with a (21-13) record, so not too many mistakes were made.

I'm very happy with the change to Pitino, but you're making massive assumptions here.

Never, never, never compare anything going forward to the Brewster fiasco as your reasoning for not being optimistic.
