All Things Tubby Smith Thread UPDATED 5/27: Vince Taylor joins Tubby at TTech

Stopped in a Texas Tech forum to see a progress report. Things are not pretty. If that site is accurate- Esposito is Tubby's first staff pickup. ?? At any rate- there is ten times the action going on here with our new coach in both staff activity and recruiting efforts. We have a whole staff out there on the road now and it looks like Tubby hasn't unpacked yet. Could be wrong but that's the impression I get. Thank you coach Pitino!

It's a football school....duh....

Basketball is an afterthought there.

The reason that I said that was because every time a person makes the smallest comment about Tubby 10 people jump on it and say let it go. I am not sure why the other way around would be wrong. You guys need to let it go too. People in Texas are a lot less excited about Tubby as people are here about Richard. There are several reasons for that. 1. He just got fired 2. Richard is young and a much better salesman 3. Their fans come here and read posts about Tubby and how bad he was. Tubby and Richard will have a lot of fun next year. Expectations in both schools are low. I don't have to prove it to you or anybody here, I am a Gopher and Tubby fan. I will cheer for both.

Go Gophers and Go Tubby

Coincidentally, I went on their message board this afternoon and it does appear to be slow going for Tubby. I think he will leave their program in a little bit better shape than it was in before he took the job ( and he will continue to add to his net worth, retiring a happy and wealthy man). Fifteen years from now Tubby will be long forgotten around these parts. Pitino, though he will be long gone, will still be discussed regularly, in good and bad ways. Rich will give us a very fun run and then the check will arrive. At this point I'm up for it and we'll see what happens.

Let him coach a game before we declare him the second coming.

Or, before we insinuate that he will cheat to win. That's what I got from his post (the part about the check arriving and people discussing him in bad ways).

And maybe that check will come from the Gophers. Ya never know.:cheer:

Speaking of letting things go. Are you afraid that he will do well in TT and you will be sorry for all the bashing? Tubby has learned from his mistakes here so he is very careful about his moves. He got Williams from TCU who is a very good recruiter in Texas. Jo has had good coaching career in Texas also. Alex Foster is visiting TT this weekend. What you hear on their website is like what you could hear on this board 6 years ago. Tubby will raise the bar there as he did here.

Go Gophers

Not clear why you are trolling on this board. In response to what is wrong with your post:

1) Tubby has learned from his mistakes. BS. One of the biggest problems here was that he was too stubborn to make any adjustments (e.g., line changes, assistant coaches, being decisive on recruites)
2) Very careful about his moves. I call BS. Unless you are in the Tubby inner circle, there is nothing to indicate that his pace of hiring decisions is anything more than a continuation of his being unable to make a decision/commitment here. Please explain how you are in Tubby's thought process on this, otherwise BS
3) If Tubby is going to raise the bar there, he better bust a move in terms of getting some aggressive recruiters and get out there on the road himself.

I am begging you, please go to the TT board. With your statements, you obviously are more of a Tubby fan than a Gopher fan.

The Gophers have only had two coaches of any significance leave for greener pastures in the last 30 years, but they are both thought of bitterly to this day (Holtz, Brenda Frese). Despite the fact that it has been a rare occurrence, it seems to be one of the great fears of Minnesota sports fans. I assume this is the reference, not cheating.

I have been on the TT board. It has very little basketball- spread out among the numerous football post as well as hidden between the questions about what kind of airplane to buy for trips from Arlington to Lubbock for FOOTBALL games, as well as advice seeking for real estate in Lubbock et. al.

There is a fair amount of support for Tubby- as well as not nearly as much information about Red Raider Basketball- period. (Although you seemed to have missed the posts about the New Mexico JUCO PG Rob Turner that Tubby has also been recruiting.)

Tubby has also been interviewing a few others for his staff- they chose other positions. You don't rag on Rich for losing Mike Balado to his Dad's staff. Why make such a big deal out of Tubby's player recruiting and staff search?

And stop trying to make it like all of Red Raider Nation is as negative as you are.

As excited as I am to see Gopher Basketball 2013-14, I also look forward to keeping tabs on Tubby and TT Basketball. A person can support both- and because of Tubby, many do.

In the same way, I keep track of Long Beach State, simply because a former coach of the Gophers is there. Nothing wrong with that.

I will even follow soon to be former Womens' BB Coach Pam Borton after she gets her ass fired.

Texas Tech picked up its first hoops signee of the Tubby Smith era on Friday when New Mexico Junior College guard Robert Turner chose to become a Red Raider, four days after receiving an offer.

“We are proud of Robert “Bob” Turner for committing today to Texas Tech University today,” NMJC head coach James Miller tweeted on Friday. “He has earned it with his hard work and sacrifice!”

Turner started 23 of 30 games for the Thunderbirds and averaged 9.8 points per game and 28.9 points per 40 minutes during NMJC’s NJCAA Region 5 Championship season. Averging 13.6 minutes per game, Turner shot 42.9 percent from the field, 26.3 percent from the 3-point line and 62.6 percent from the free throw line during the 2012-13 season.

I'm agnostic as to what Tubby does going forward

13.6 minutes per game in JC??? Also, love the use of per 40 stats to inflate his numbers.

That was my first reaction too Russ. Remember, liars can figure and figures can lie.

Don't forget that Kendall Shell averaged nearly 13 points per 40 minutes this season. Just wait until Duke comes knocking at his door.

In college, I played one minute and scored two points. That makes my history of being equivalent to 80 points per 40 minutes. Damn I was good.

Thank you and Dr. Don. As I have said in many of my posts, there are a few schools that I cheer for in addition to the Gophers. It is really hard for these so-called-fans to understand that you can do that. I have criticized Tubby many times but never bashed him like a few here. I assure many people that I will not be calling for Richard's head if his system fails here. I will support him even if I am skeptical. The reason that I am skeptical is the fact that B1G coaches will not allow Richard to impliment his game plans. Bo Ryan will have his players ready for Richard. They will clog the paint and slow the tempo.

The 1st time I saw a B1G team playing was right before I went to Purdue. It was 1996 or so??? I have a feeling that Brad Miller was on that team (not 100% sure). I was amazed how physical Purdue was when they played UK coached by Rick Pitino. UK won that game but it was a bit of challenge. Like I have said before, I think Painter coaches just like Keady. He is only one coach. Add Matta, Izzo, and the rest, you'll see how hard it is for a coach who has only one year of coaching experience to win in B1G. Now, before Bga1, Jamalo, and Tiny call me anti-Gopher, I say this, I would love to sit in the W-arena or a bar and see that Richard's teams beat every one of those teams for the next 20 years. If not, I assure everyone that I will not bash Richard either.

Go Gophers

Lubbock Avalanche Journal: Smith talks recruiting, building Tech program to fans in Amarillo

■ AGN: You mentioned a fun style of play. What type of basketball should fans expect?

■ Smith: We want to play an up-tempo style. We like to press. We like to run. I have to look at what type of 3-point shooting team we were last year — we weren’t very good. We turned the ball over a lot last year, so we’re going to have to work pretty hard on our ball-handling skills, shooting and our passing. Those are the things that can make it an exciting style of basketball and entertaining for our fans to come watch.

■ AGN: You have a history of building or rebuilding programs. How do you think this job compares to some of the places you’ve been?

■ Smith: It’s tough. This is probably the toughest. I say that because looking at the changes that have taken place here — so many faces that these players have had to adapt to and adjust to. What I appreciate about these young men is how they’ve preserved, and even looking at games they played last year, how hard they played. They didn’t quit. That tells me a lot about their heart and soul, and that they have what it takes to get it done.

I've heard that one before.

He does?

He does?

Actually as down as TT is I think Tubby was a good choice, he will make them respectable, do it the right way, I also think there is a wall he hits and the program just does not progress beyond that.

Tulsa:
4 years prior to Tubby = 2 NIT appearances
4 years with Tubby = 2 NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearances

Georgia:
4 years prior to Tubby = 2 NIT appearances
2 years with Tubby = 2 NCAA appearances, 1 Sweet Sixteen, 1st back to back 20+ win seasons in school history

Minnesota:
8 years prior to Tubby = 1 20+ win season, 1 NCAA Tournament appearance
6 years with Tubby = 5 20+ win seasons, 3 NCAA Tournament appearances

Yes, he does.

You know, its funny, many others across the country say that about our program. Unfortunately.

Tubby is gone.
Pitino is here.
Past stats are meaningless.
New start for the Gophers.
