MIKE MAX: TREVOR GETS 6th YEAR!!!!!!!!!! UPDATED: Officially Confirmed by the U!!

Great post Short Ornery!

The big thing to me is that we need to figure out how to score against a zone. Literally, I think our inability to handle a zone defense cost us 4-5 games this season. I don't know if that comes from our inexperienced players or if it's a coaching thing. But if Trevor comes back, we really have a nice mix of experienced and youth.

We need to play like Marquette or Florida...

Smothering man-to-man defense and when you get the ball and you race down court as fast as humanly possible to the rim until someone stops you. Breakneck pace and aggression, the likes of which the Big Ten is not ready for.

With Dre, Austin, Coleman, Welch, Chip, Rodney, Mo, EE and hopefully Trevor we can play like that and win.

Dre
Welch
Hollins
Rodney
Trevor
------------
Coleman
Mo
EE
Chip
Ellenson
Buggs
Ingram

If Rodney can add some perimeter game to his arsenal and you can go Dre/Hollins/Rodney/Trevor/Mo that's frightening. Mo has that soft touch and huge frame where he can be one of the better big men in the Big Ten IMO if he's fully healthy and playing at an effective weight.

I really expect Austin and Coleman to improve their outside shooting and for EE to add a little something offensively-- one move.

All the sudden this is looking like a real team again. Yes, I'm a Gopher fan, so I'm obviously bracing for the worst, but I'm going to enjoy this glimmer of hope, however brief and fleeting it may be.

Except for some South Carolina media types have been emailing our media types that Tubby's been contacting SC HS coaches gauging their talent. Not sure if that's true, but it's what some of our media members have been saying.

Doogie's Twitter: "Lots going on. @sportstalksc emailed to say they're reporting Tubby has called HS coaches in So. Car. to get a feel for the state's talent."

This might be one of the dumbest tweets of all time. Just think about it, do you really think Tubby is calling high school coaches out of the blue to assess talent? Dude has been in basketball in entire life, i think he knows the general landscape of high school basketball. If that would be so important to him, he never would have came to Minnesota. Sometimes you have to think about stuff first before tweeting.

Over the past few games Rodney has shown an improved outside shot. Tubby loves his bigs, and there is no way Rodney will start at the 4. He got wore down way too much in the big10. He is doing better now that these teams haven't had to size as the squads in our league. Although i do love that line up, Rodney is a 3 and needs to be at the 3 for his development.

AND Marquette got hammered. Rough night for one of our resident geniuses.

Ok Bob, this is the situation where your dislike for cutting a player comes into play. For Trevor to come back, we need to cut a player (or convince a player to transfer). Are you okay with that?

I think Chip Armelin leaves voluntarily, especially if Lockett comes here.

So what time this morning will we know for sure?

Play Big East ball...I agree. I'm hoping Trevor can come back 100%. The turn around on ACL replacement varies from person to person.

One other question:

If one of the "Tubby going to __________" turns out to finally be true, would that sway Trevors decision? I wonder if he would sit down with Tubby and ask him point blank, "are you going to be my coach if I come back?"

Also, wow.

Dre Hollins: 8.5 ppg (14.3 ppg over his last 10)
Lockett: 13.0 ppg at ASU
Austin Hollins: 9.1 ppg
Williams: 12.1 ppg (14.7 ppg over his last 10)
Mbakwe: 14.0 ppg in limited action this year
-----
Starters: 65 ppg if you assume Dre and Rodney carry their recent performance into next year and assume no other changes

Welch: 9.9 ppg
Coleman: 5.3 ppg
Walker: 3.7 ppg
Eliason: 2.6 ppg
Ingram: 1.2 ppg
-----
Bench: 23 ppg if you assume no other changes

That is an insane amount of scoring. Now, you'd have to assume that some of these points would go somewhere else and certain players would see declines due to reduced playing time, or having to share the load, so don't go penciling in 88 ppg yet. But the best team in the country in scoring this past year was Iona (83.3 ppg). Me likey :)

It's OFFICIAL!! Tweet from the U:

Go Gophers!!

Teams in the B1G don't average 80 pts/game. Not enough possessions in a game. If that's the roster next year, I'd expect almost everyone's numbers to decrease because of that reason alone. There is only 1 basketball afterall.

Definitely agree, but the fact that we would be able to put 4 guys on the floor that averaged 10+ ppg the season prior would be a feat. I'm not sure any team in the country this season could claim that. Makes me feel good about our options.

It's amazing what one month can do to sway the momentum of a program. It was hard to conceive of this much positivity being associated with Tubby's program during our late conference swoon.

Go Gophers! Beat those Dawgs!

Tweet from Trevor

Thanks for all of the support twit fam I really appreciate it. I'm really happy about the NCAA decision to give me the option of having another year.

Tweet from Trevor: "I don't know what will happens yet but I'm very blessed to be in this position now. Gophernation is the best and I'm just speechless right now lol"

I'm sure Trevor realizes that for him to come back he has to lose one of his teammates and take away their chance on the team. That can't be easy at all. Ultimately he should come back and will IMO, but to expect a fast decision when he basically has to decide to cut one of his teammates is not realistic. I think this will weigh on him, but in the end is guess he returns.

With Mbakwe back in the fold it sure gives the Gophers another go to type player in certain situations. It will be very interesting to see how Tubby Smith and the coaching staff balances the lineups and who plays with whom. The idea of having Hollins, Hollins, Mbakwe, and Williams on the floor sounds great but who is the 5th starter? Do you go with a big like EE or Walker or do you go with another wing player that adds athletic ability like Coleman or a shooter like Welch? Will this allow the Gophers to redshirt Buggs and Ellenson?

The addition of Mbakwe is adding an All Big Ten type of player at a position that the Gophers and most other teams really need. I thought heading into next year the biggest weakness the Gophers may have was post scoring. Mbakwe will be able to do that presuming everything with his knee works out. We have some nice things going into this team for next year and Mbakwe should pair very nicely with Elliason and Walker or with Williams when the team goes small.

I wonder if he's keeping it vague because he hasn't been promised a scholarship/hasn't spoken with the coaching staff, or because he's not feeling coming back for another year.

I'm having a really really hard time with this.

I cannot handle the fact that the most positive thread of the year has Mike Max in the title...

I'm sure Trevor realizes that for him to come back he has to lose one of his teammates and take away their chance on the team.

But he also has to realize that by NOT coming back, his teams chances of winning the Big Ten are much worse.

He's keeping it vague because someone is losing a scholly and the coaching staff hasn't told that individual yet.

Agreed and I think he will in the end, but he does seem to really care about his teammates and has to feel bad about it.

In a world of one and dones when is the last time a player let alone the team's star player received a sixth year of eligibility? It can't be too common in the big 6 conferences.
