I don't know how television newsrooms work, but Collin may have been assigned the story and not the initiator. I don't think she's a bad reporter per se, but this was a nothing-burger of a story.

I don't have a big problem with Mike Max (being an MIAC grad, I've appreciated his local angle stories) except that he's a front-runner supreme. I think the other angle is that he--and he's not alone--doesn't appreciate Fleck's style. He bought into Country Jer's flavor and, by extension, Claeys'. Max obviously cannot do this story even if he wanted to because good luck getting access to the Gopher athletic program if he went down that road.

I don't know how this typically works as far as deadlines for newspapers, but I checked both the press and the tribune, not even a mention of this story.

My opinion is that is very telling on how absurd this story is.

We'll see if anything is mentioned tomorrow after Part Deux, but I would be surprised.

when many of the local sports media comes to the defense of the program/coach, that's something WCCO probably didn't think of.

Good luck getting any special access if the gophers do well this coming season.

Again, I don't know newsroom politics, but if the producer says "Bring me something!" my guess is any reporter who enjoys earning a paycheck does just that.

I work in local radio, and I've done some newspaper work in smaller markets - but there is something that holds true no matter the size of the market.

If someone comes to you pitching a story, as in "you should do a story about......" - the 1st question you ask is "why is this person pitching this story?"

I would say about 95% of the time, the person pitching the story has an axe to grind. they're mad at somebody or some group, and they're hoping the media will run a negative story.

that doesn't mean you can't look into it, but if nothing turns up, you have to be smart enough to let it go and not get sucked into someone's vendetta.

and, another aspect of this: don't promise more than you can deliver. CCO hyped this as a big expose, and it turned out to be a lot of rehashed material from a primary source who clearly has an axe to grind with Gopher Football.

Is anyone supposed that WCCO would do this. They love this type of cancel culture attention. That is the point here, to rally aggression towards a public entity. Too bad they underestimated the Gopher fans. We Do Not Stand For This Stupidity.

I don't think so....

I think the 'gotcha' / big story incentive for a given reporter / news station is a more likely motivation. Probabbly not the worst motivation for a station to have, but it should be tempered with come common sense / skepticism.

May is traditionally "ratings" month for tv stations trying to sell advertising. More viewers equals more $$$.
