WCCO Football Story

I have not watched or listened to WCCO in a long time and this solidifies my decision not to do so. It is simple. If you believe WCCO is reaching for anything to get views and you dont agree with the morals and values they have then do not listen to their media. Thats how they listen.
Yeah but they really don't know why.

It's easy enough for them to interpret it as "stories just aren't compelling enough ... gotta go harder at these crazy stories".

Not to say you should watch or anything, I just don't know that they know / care.

I didn’t see the story. Based on feedback here it doesn’t seem worth watching. It would be nice for the “U” to come out strong in defense of the FB program here, but I won’t hold my breath for that.
I kind of disagree that the U should really do anything in this case. WCCO is getting slammed for this story and the majority of people can clearly see it for the garbage it is. Pushing back on it just keeps the story around longer.

People will get distracted by something else soon and this will all just fade into the background like the big nothing burger it is.

Yeah I'd be wary of 'let's investigate again at the behest of some guy ... whose accusations we already investigated'.

I agree with what you say here....

I finally watched it. I have a couple of thoughts:

1. Jason Stahl looks/sounds EXACTLY like I was picturing him in my head.
and
2. I typically don't want to speak ill of the players, but if what they showed was the hit he took that caused the injury (why they decided to cut right before he supposedly fell down and blacked out is suspicious), he never had any business being on a football field. Everyone in full pads, everyone going full speed, and he thought it was a walk through??

To #1 I could not agree more, only thing that would have made the image more complete was if he was wearing an ascot or something along those lines. Him typing away in his sad little corner was pretty funny as well. Dude is a complete tool.

As to #2 though - that drill had the players in helmets, shoulder pads, and Shorts. In shorts you won't go full contact and Edmonds should NOT have been tackled by #46 on that play. What I fail to see is how a bonehead play by #46 is somehow the coaches fault. I have zero doubt 46 was chewed out for tackling a guy during a non-full go drill, especially if that was in fact the hit that lead to his concussion and subsequent retirement from football.

Feel bad for Nolan but it was a freak accident that can happen at any time in any sport. Anyone playing football understands the risks involved with playing a violent game with lots of collisions between very large, very strong players. Coaches and leagues will do what they can to make the game safer for the players but there is no possible way to make football completely safe due to the nature of the game itself.

Anyone listen?

I heard it driving in. I'll try to list what I remember:
-Mentioned again about his photos being used by WCCO & no credit attributed
-MN does not do as much tackling in practice as most people think; more "thud"
-Discussed the Reigelsperger situation again, talking about the MNDaily article
-A few mentions about Stahl & his push for wanting to become a president for the players
-Quick comparison mention regarding physical & mental tolls at MN & comparing to Alabama
-The medical retirement angle, stating that it is right in line when Brewster/Kill/Claeys were coach and is even slightly lower

There wasn't anything earth shattering & don't know about it being an undressing, but pretty much everything that we somewhat already know; ridiculous agenda by an ex-professor & why WCCO even gave it time in the first place.

At some point you have to defend the brand. The U football, Basketball, and Hockey is not the trash pit that every entitled PSW can throw another bucket of trash. If the U decided to put the lawsuit against that PSW I will be more than willing write a check for them. Our Parents always taught that building your own success by bringing down someone else success is not a good way to live . Hope his life is as miserable as he is trying make for PJ.

It does add up, from what I’ve heard this is just the beginning🤷🏼‍♂️
Just a simple question. Did you talk to Mr. Stahl about the glowing reviews from wide range of audience including some local sport journalists? I would like to know more about how horrible the U athlete program is.

Come on man!

He's just here to 'clear the air' with innuendo and vague references!

Even down to those pants?

Definitely not an overblown sense of self at all. Originally came on here to clear the air with what happened and not be belittled by die-hard gopher keyboard warriors. Should've I done things differently? Sure. And most definitely not obsessed with the program at all. It was a dream come true being able to work for the team, but was horrified by things that I saw and how people were treated.

Haven’t talked to him since it came out. From the sound of it, I thought there would’ve been more, the segment didn’t do a great job. I can see how everyone (fans, local media) like fleck from what he portrays on camera, but many others including myself have seen a different side of it, and it’s unfortunate. One thing I would like to know is why Fleck or coyle have refused to say anything. I’m not saying they have to but it would be easy for them to deny everything and end any more talks about the story

I would appreciate if you expounded on the "just the beginning" and what you mean by unfortunate. Thanks in advance!

Spill all your inside info here and get it all out there.

Keeping with a Star Trek theme...

Mirror, mirror on the wall...

...obviously too much time on my hands today...

From the way I was told, was they had a lot of players and former coaches that were being included in the story. I’ll admit even myself I was expecting more, the segment was very vague.
It’s unfortunate that he’s not the man he seems to be and promotes himself to be, that’s all I’m saying. He treats star players like gods, everyone else he doesn’t give a shit about who you are. I will admit yes I’m bitter about my situation and everything that happened, but I have my reasons. People don’t need to believe it and say whatever they want.

Honest question and not trying to be a jerk - what was your experience with competitive sports prior to your position at the U?

As someone who spent my childhood and college involved in sports, nothing that has been "revealed" is surprising or unsettling.

No worries, Have played sports all of my life. Baseball, basketball, football, tennis. Childhood through high school. I’ve had many great coaches throughout my sports that I’ve played. At first I was all bought in with the culture, which anyone would do. My experiences have changed that. I’ve never ran into a coach like this throughout my time as an athlete.

Fleck and Coyle are staying quiet because unless there is some hidden ground breaking revolution what is included in this story is complete and total garbage and not worth dignifying with a response of any kind. Stahl looks like a joke after this and the "allegations" put forth by the story are nothing that you couldn't find at every frigigin power 5 program in the country.

People like Fleck because he is moving the program in a direction that it hasn't been moved in a long time. I am sure he isn't always the person he portrays when the cameras are on, in the exact same way that Jerry Kill was nothing like the character he tried to play on TV. I bet you would be hard pressed to find a power 5 head football coach anywhere that doesn't have a jerk streak in them.

With all due respect....you aren't going to run into a coach like a division 1 football coach at any level in youth through high school....D1 athletics is big business and coaches are forced to run it that way or they get fired. There isn't a lot of room for nice guys in high level coaching these days. Those guys are found at the lower levels where the pressure is much much lower.

Yeah, it comes off as naivete. OMG! Coach Fleck is different than how he portrays himself to the normal fan! Shocker!

Mn sports media trying to get another great coach fired.

Terrible, terrible reporting. Someone wants to be the big nerd who gets him fired just like they did with Haskins.

This is the #1 reason sports at this University have never done well. They aren't fully supported by the staff, media, etc. Fleck is doing his best to change that culture, but IMO, it is the reason MN has been a bottom of the barrel program in revenue producing college sports for most of my lifetime.

Thank you for your response.
1. No I dont like him because of what I see on TV or radio. Many of us like him because he produce tangible results. Steve Jobs we saw in TV was not the same Steve Jobs at Cupertino. If you have large enterprise or run organization, you need to be tough and smart. If I want a saint I will go and look for Mother Mary Teresa. Not PJ.
2. What you see is the reality of D 1 P5 program. Not prefect but can be improved. However, that improvement need to be on the back of PJ or Coyle career is one of the most ridiculous notion I've seen here. That is what exactly Stahl is doing and you're abating the cause. Student advocacy doesn't need to come at the expense of someone else success.
3. PJ and Coyle wont say it because I assume they were advised not give oxygen to this garbage. Smart advice indeed.
4. Giving priority to Star athletes? Welcome to the University of Minnesota. These stars come in many shape in forms including in class rooms. If you're in a competitive academic program at the U, you will see that some student are treated in certain ways by Prof. I've seen it many times and I dont mind it personally. If you want to be treated like a star, then put efforts to be one. That's the whole point of being away from home and putting in handwork to become the best.
So welcome to real world where participation trophies are useless.

BTW Do PJ give out those useless trophies ? I hope not. If he does, that will be one of the most egregious in my book.
