WCCO Football Story

I don't know how television newsrooms work, but Collin may have been assigned the story and not the initiator. I don't think she's a bad reporter per se, but this was a nothing-burger of a story.

I don't have a big problem with Mike Max (being an MIAC grad, I've appreciated his local angle stories) except that he's a front-runner supreme. I think the other angle is that he--and he's not alone--doesn't appreciate Fleck's style. He bought into Country Jer's flavor and, by extension, Claeys'. Max obviously cannot do this story even if he wanted to because good luck getting access to the Gopher athletic program if he went down that road.

Certainly possible someone was assigned to the story.

But it's still their responsibility to come back with "hey this story is pretty questionable".

I don't know how this typically works as far as deadlines for newspapers, but I checked both the press and the tribune, not even a mention of this story.

My opinion is that is very telling on how absurd this story is.

We'll see if anything is mentioned tomorrow after Part Deux, but I would be surprised.

when many of the local sports media comes to the defense of the program/coach, that's something WCCO probably didn't think of.

Good luck getting any special access if the gophers do well this coming season.

Again, I don't know newsroom politics, but if the producer says "Bring me something!" my guess is any reporter who enjoys earning a paycheck does just that.

I work in local radio, and I've done some newspaper work in smaller markets - but there is something that holds true no matter the size of the market.

If someone comes to you pitching a story, as in "you should do a story about......" - the 1st question you ask is "why is this person pitching this story?"

I would say about 95% of the time, the person pitching the story has an axe to grind. they're mad at somebody or some group, and they're hoping the media will run a negative story.

that doesn't mean you can't look into it, but if nothing turns up, you have to be smart enough to let it go and not get sucked into someone's vendetta.

and, another aspect of this: don't promise more than you can deliver. CCO hyped this as a big expose, and it turned out to be a lot of rehashed material from a primary source who clearly has an axe to grind with Gopher Football.

someone at CCO should have been smart enough to say "no" on this one.

Is anyone supposed that WCCO would do this. They love this type of cancel culture attention. That is the point here, to rally aggression towards a public entity. Too bad they underestimated the Gopher fans. We Do Not Stand For This Stupidity.

Saw these player tweets on my twitter feed, figured they should be shared to this thread:

But they couldn't cancel Mrs. KKKroll. Must be hard to cancel someone they know.

What is one to take from these tweets. Is Ibrahim referencing the Micah Roane moped incident?

But I was assured on page 3 of this thread that "...this is just the beginning".

We'll be lucky to have a program to cheer this fall. [sad face emoji]

I tried to find all the players on twitter (by sifting through Gopher Football's follow list) so that no tweets were missed (though I may have missed some, twitter's UI was working against me):

I'm certain there are more players on twitter, but I'm not going to spend the rest of the afternoon tracking their accounts down.

No clue, I thought they were both related to the story, perhaps they aren't.
A lot of the time I can't tell what anyone is saying on Twitter.

There's a part 2 coming?

There's a part 2 coming?
A few people have mentioned a part 2 but there was no mention in the story about a part 2 so not sure. After part 1 I am not sure what stupidity they could dredge up for a part 2.

Does that really sound like something WCCO / Liz Collins would try to do?

I don't think so....

I think the 'gotcha' / big story incentive for a given reporter / news station is a more likely motivation. Probabbly not the worst motivation for a station to have, but it should be tempered with come common sense / skepticism.
May is traditionally "ratings" month for tv stations trying to sell advertising. More viewers equals more $$$.

Can anyone translate this?
Teague's status has been a mystery for a while. Lots say he has retired but he is still listed on the gophersports.com roster. He wasn't listed on either the gold or maroon squad for the spring game so I have no clue what his deal is.

Saw these player tweets on my twitter feed, figured they should be shared to this thread:
What is going on? He is still on the current roster, and he is not on the transfer portal. Did he slide down the depth chart and felt slighted?

Honestly this story sounds like these people just discovered that a sport called football exists, and the college is actually supporting a team.
I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that Stahl isn't a big sports fan....:)

Mike Max always had a bit going with Liz Collins about how she didn't care about and knew nothing about sports when they did weekend news together.

Ahhh now I get it.....makes total sense. :)
In Star Trek, Kadir beneath Mo Moteh is Tamamarian for failure to communicate/understand.

The Tamarians (or Children of Tama/Tamar) are a humanoid race first encountered by the Federation in the 23rd century. They are native to the planet Sigma Tama IV. While the Script, Star Trek.com and Memory Alpha use the term "Children of Tama," the SCE story and Articles of the Federation uses "Children of Tamar."
