Trent Lockett granted release to be "closer to home" UPDATED (4/10): Marq Leading

Ray Williams, this is why guys like Moses87 gets numerous nominations for the dpodoll award, time and time again. That award is this:

"congratulations on reaching an epic-heretofore-unheard-of-level-of-dumbassery "

You already have the lifetime achievement award on the basis of 6,000 consecutive posts with no discussion of Gopher hoops.

If Lockett and Mbakwe are on the team next year and one of the sophomores leave, we will have a gigantic 2013 class to fill. It's too bad that class wouldn't line up for the 2014 Minnesota class which looks to be loaded.

It would actually take a 2014 scholarship away if Chip or Mav left.

We'll just have to leave a scholarship or two open.

I bet we'll find a way to get a scholarship for him somehow.

Really? I was thinking the opposite, does Tubby seen like the kind of guy who would pull a scholarship to win more games? I wish he was, but I'm not sure he is.

I have no way of knowing but I don't think it's done that way by a guy like Tubby. I'd guess he sits down with each kid, tells him what he needs to do for next year and then tells certain kids that realistically, they probably won't see the floor next year. Next step is to tell the kid that they are welcome to stay if they feel that they can be a good teammate under those terms. If on the other hand the kid wants more PT the coach offers to help him find a new place. A kid that is told that and thinks they can still play is going to want to transfer most times.

Yep, Trevor recently said that Tubby has always been pretty up-front and realistic with him. In that context he was referring to NBA stuff, but I imagine it would apply to playing time in college as well. Anyone know his history at Kentucky in these situations?

During the Louisville gave they mentioned JR smith's younger brother pays his tuition and he is technically a walk on.

Wonder if Tubby can convince Lionel to pay for Austin for a year to open a scholarship for Trent?

That would be awesome, but I highly doubt it will happen. Especially since they both play the same position.

If we go 3 guard offense, I think Joe's minutes will be effected more than Austin's.

“@GophersNow: Hearing Trent Lockett prefers to play for the Gophers because they're closest to his mom. But there's no scholarship for him right now.”

"@GophersNow" on twitter is marcus fuller of the St. Paul Pioneer Press correct?

per Sid:

"Trent Lockett, the former Hopkins basketball standout who is expected to leave Arizona State for his senior season because he wants to be closer to his cancer-stricken mother, will likely wind up at Iowa State, where coach Fred Hoiberg has done a great job securing transfers from big schools."

Go Gophers!!

Thanks for the article Bleed. I thought the first section of the article was interesting. Glad to hear about the rule change, allowing coaches to work with players over the summer. Should also help with academics, encouraging players to hang around for summer school. Smart change by the NCAA.

Kiss of death for ISU.

Bleacher Report: "Trent Lockett Soon to Play for the Golden Gophers?"

If he plans to transfer, Lockett wishes to return closer to his home in Minnesota....

If Lockett were to transfer back to Minnesota, the University of Minnesota would happily await his leadership. After three seasons at Arizona State, each season as a team continues to head south, though the rise of Lockett’s play continues to rise.

This past season he led the team in scoring (13.0) and rebounding (5.8). His talent continues to excel as his potential explodes in the Sun Devils jersey.

With his leadership, how deadly would the Golden Gophers be in the talented Big Ten? Signs point to being one of the top five teams in strong power conference.

Would Lockett even get his hardship waiver accepted if he went to Iowa State? Iowa State is 4 hours from the Twin Cities. I don't understand why the NCAA would give him a hardship waiver. The purpose of him transferring is so he can be with his family, especially mother, as much as possible. A twenty minute drive is much easier than a four hour drive. He would be able to see his family much more at Minnesota.

Why does he need a hardship waiver? He is on track to graduate in 3 years.

Remember, the working assumption for some is that Lockett will graduate prior to the beginning of next season and thus he'd be able to find an almost sure-shot way to have immediate eligibility at another school without a hardship waiver.

If* Lockett had been planning to leave ASU for quite some time (which is my feeling, but nothing more), it might be more accurate to say that he is transferring from ASU because he wanted to get out of there and play elsewhere. At this point in time, a big factor in deciding exactly where he wants to play is the location of his family.

Now, if I am ASU I'd much rather describe the situation as, "the young man is leaving because of a family medical matter, period" instead of, "yet another good player is leaving our program because he'd rather play elsewhere... oh and by the way, now there is an family illness that is playing into the decision on where he'll transfer and even if he didn't want out of our program, he'd be looking at transfer options"...

My take on him and the U is that he's not the best fit for the Gophers right now. If he has a strong desire to be in the Twin Cities because of the medical concerns it would be great if they could find a way to fit him at the U and keep everyone in the program happy, but I don't think another wing is what Tubby needs (unless they are a big time sniper from deep).

+1

And no way I would destroy future recruiting by cutting a player which is not Tubby's way and has never been the U's way.

Go Gophers!

So GW, would you say there is a 2% chance of Lockett being a Gopher next season?

Sid just said he(Lockett) will not be going to Minnesota because they don't have any available scholarships.

Just thought I would keep you all informed.:)

Not sure if any of Sid's information is reliable anymore. Time for him to retire.

Well there you have it... Darn.

This is quite disappointing news to be honest. A bona-fide all-conference player like Trent Lockett could have put this team over the top (in the short term). With Lockett, Tubby would have had an embarrassment of riches not seen in this program in quite some time. And for those of you who think he wouldn't be a good fit: Give me a break. He is a selfless player and strong leader with tremendous basketball skill and savvy. This program doesn't have the luxury of saying things like "he doesn't fit in our system." You make room for a player like Lockett.

We're talking about the kid from the 10-21 team from a horrible conference who didn't make the All-Conference team (10 players), All-Conference second team (5 players), or All-Conference honorable mention (6 players) in this especially bad 2011-12 season for the PAC-12, right?

Not knocking the kid, but I don't see him turning Minnesota from whatever they are now to a team with "an embarrassment of riches".
