Trent Lockett granted release to be "closer to home" UPDATED (4/10): Marq Leading

Probably taking the scenic route.

Hell, even Google claims 4 hours 9 minutes...and Google is usually on the high side.

Congratulations to both Iowa State and the University of Minnesota for their post-season basketball success. I am a native South Dakotan who has always cheered for the Gophers. In fact, my youngest daughter just graduated from the University of Minnesota. But in my opinion, one place that Trent might take a look at is South Dakota State University. They are fresh off their first NCAA tournament appearance and finished with a 27-8 record. They graduated only one player and Trent could be paired with point guard Nate Wolters, a potential NBA draft pick. Plus, they could surround him with three other starters who all shot over 40 percent from the 3-point line. I also think they have a very good chance of winning the Summit League again next year. I know it is not a Big-6 conference, but they are close to the Twin Cities and it would be worth some consideration.

There is some interesting news coming out of SDSU today but no rumors about Lockett transferring. Four Jackrabbits are transferring out, two walkons who weren't going to play, one redshirt on scholarship, and one true freshman shooting guard out of Illinois who was a scholarship player who had some meaningful minutes this year. The last one mentioned is a little surprising and may be the only real loss. There's a rumor that one of the scholarships may be filled or close to it, one is being "held" available for someone, and one is open. Everyone's being tight lipped about it and nobody is complaining.

I don't hear all the rumors about the Jackrabbits but I catch a few...I haven't heard anyone claim Lockett has looked at SDSU.

SDSU will have a good team next year, expected to be much better than this year's team. One of the top guys this year had a broken bone in his foot early in the season (when SDSU played Minnesota) but he had a great second-half of the season.

Gophers scared the heck out of me last night but they stuck in there. Great to see the win. Watched some great minutes, particularly in that first half.

I wouldn't be shocked if that kid at Duluth East that a lot of people think Tubby should have taken over Ellenson goes to SDSU.

It will be interesting if the Big Dance appearance and all the buzz about Wolters will help the Jacks widen their recruiting footprint.

Lockett is a fine player who should have been recruited by the Gophers.

However, I just don't believe he adds that much to what the Gopher's currently have. I believe that Trent & Joe Coleman are very much similar players and if we compare freshman numbers, the stats are very similar:

Joe Coleman 18.6 min/g 43.4%FG 25%3pt 72%FT 3.0 reb/g 1.1 ast/g 1.4 to/g 5.6pt/g
Joe (last 5 games) 32.6 min/g 51.8%FG - %3pt 63%FT 5.2 reb/g 2.2 ast/g 2.8 to/g 7.6pt/g
Trent Lockett 19.6min/g 48.7%FG 21%3pt 70%FT 3.4 reb/g 0.8 ast/g 1.5 to/g 6.7pt/g

Trent would be a nice addition, but he is not a must get player.

I certainly wouldn't call Lockett a "must get", but he sure would be a pleasant addition to a team that already has some good pieces in place for 2012-13. It's not very often a proven and productive 3-year performer with (presmuably) no off-court issues arrives at your doorstep. If he's interested in playing here, I think Tubby can find a way to make it work, especially if there's a chance the kid otherwise ends up at Wisconsin or Iowa.

Izzo was apprehensive about taking in Brandon Wood from Valpo, but that worked out pretty well for Sparty. That's just one example.

I am shocked, an a little appalled, that anyone would suggest that Trent Lockett wouldn't add anything to next year's team. Are you kidding? He is one of the top shooting guards/small forwards in the Pac 12 and is from the Minneapolis area. He would immediately become one of the Gopher's top three offensive players. He's a very smart kid and does everything you could ask of a leader at both ends of the floor. Joe Coleman will still get his minutes next season even if Trent decides to come to Minnesota. And numbers aren't everything. I watched Lockett play a lot as a freshman and he displayed a much higher skill level at that age than Joe Coleman.

My only concern was looking at Lockett's Turnover to Assist Ratio...3.2 turnovers to less than 3 assists...Exactly what we don't need...We need people that value the basketball and can actually make, sound decisions with it. I would love another sniper on the wing, but I would be more excited if Lockett was a pure PG so that Andre could play the 2.

Do you really need to bring that point up again, when it was shot down the first time?

Not even to mention that Lockett rebounds very well for a guard/wing. Averaged 5.3 and 5.8 rpg in his sophomore and junior seasons.

I like guards that can go to the boards as well as score. Bobby Jackson (no, I'm not comparing their overall games) was an excellent rebounder for a guard (a small-ish one at that), 6.1 rpg in his senior year. If he's back, Trevor will need some help on the boards next season.

It would certainly be nice to get Lockett, but EE, the Beast, and Rodney should allow us to dominate the boards. Can't remember a better rebounding freshman C at the U, who didn't make the NBA.

Don't forget Big Mo.

If there is a scholarship open, I agree, it's a no-brainer. If our staff has to "make a scholarship" open, I don't think he's worth it. He is a very good player and I wish we would have recruited him out of HS. That said, he does play a position where we are relatively deep (the wings) and I don't think 1 season of Lockett would be worth the bad buzz on the recruiting trail that would undoubtedly come from "Tubby cutting a player" or "Tubby lied to his players".

He would be a huge addition to our team. Saying otherwise, I would have to believe you don't know much about basketball or you just aren't a fan of the gophers (like many posters) and like to knock them down a notch every chance you get.

Would he cut some of Joe's mins? Probably a few, he's a better play right now and has way more experience. Then again, he would cut Chips minutes the most.. if he's still around.

I think last night proved conclusively that we need more ball handling help and less 2 guards.

Why can't a 2 guard handle the ball?

In theory a 2 guard should be competent, but historically, the PG's primary job and skills are ball handling and passing. Andre is a nice looking prospect, but he's not proficient enough with his left hand (as pointed out by Frischella). Compounding matters, Welch and Ahanmisi are just average ball handler's at best...And Coleman isn't anywhere near sound enough to avoid turnovers.

This team could really use a Lewis Jackson type that can effortlessly get into offensive sets, create some penetration and dish. I know they don't grow on trees, but it seems Tubby has over-stocked his team with 2 guards and suspect ball handlers. He gets away with it against mediocre teams, but the Gophers will never finish over .500 in the Big Ten with this current crop of ball handlers.

There was a stretch last night midway through the 2nd half half where there Gophers went 6 minutes without getting a shot to the iron. The biggest buggaboo this team has came to the forefront and it wasn't just when Hollins got in foul trouble.

Russell Wilson worked out quite well for Wisky.

Watch them do it the next 3 years.

Go back and read your own posts. Your "Reason for Optimism " thread, the one where, you had them at #2 if Trevor returns. Then you posted that the Gophers will be preseason favorites to win the conference if Burke leaves early. Now you post this. You sure cover the bases.

Good catch. Moses87 must have forgot what name he was posting under.

“@GophersNow: Hearing Trent Lockett prefers to play for the Gophers because they're closest to his mom. But there's no scholarship for him right now.”

Ray Williams, this is why guys like Moses87 gets numerous nominations for the dpodoll award, time and time again. That award is this:

"congratulations on reaching an epic-heretofore-unheard-of-level-of-dumbassery "

If Lockett and Mbakwe are on the team next year and one of the sophomores leave, we will have a gigantic 2013 class to fill. It's too bad that class wouldn't line up for the 2014 Minnesota class which looks to be loaded.

It would actually take a 2014 scholarship away if Chip or Mav left.
