Trent Lockett granted release to be "closer to home" UPDATED (4/10): Marq Leading

Doesn't change the fact that this is kinda creepy. My Prayers are with the Lockett family.

I think people have done a good job of offering their support to the family, as we all certainly do, but also looking at the basketball side of the issue. The thread and article is about Lockett getting his release as well as the unfortunate situation of his mom.

And to say it is disrespectful to talk about the success Lockett and the team could have, I think is wrong. As a gopher (or anywhere really) Lockett will be successful, he is that kind of player, and his mom will be able to watch him constantly and depending on health, come to the games. Remember how moving it was for PC and his sister when the team shaved their heads?

There is a lot of healing and building that can come from basketball and sometimes can be more than a game when going through things like this for Trent and his entire family.

You can't tell me it wouldn't be a great joy for his mom to see her son succeed in life and on the basketball court. I believe that to be true weather he is a Gopher, a Cyclone, a Hawkeye, or a Badger.

A lot of guys have the make up that they want to get out there and be successful for their sick family member and work hard for them. I think Gopher fans have every reason to want to be a part of that and witness that great success and great story. But We will always cheer on and support Trent as a former MN high school player and just person in general, no matter where he ends up.

Really feel for Trent and his family and wish them the best in their situation and with this battle, prayers go out for his family and hope his mother can beat this.

The health of his mom and their family in general is by far the most important thing here. I think everyone here understands that.

+1,000. Really well said, Scher. If Trent were to come here, my hope first is that it lifts his Mom's spirit and gives his family comfort. If there is a benefit to the program, all the better.

Go look at Iowa States board they have 20+ pages on the guy.

Wow...a lot of compassion on Cyclone Fanatic. Below is the only mention I saw of his mother, along with a couple other quotes. First time I have ventured over there. Will likely be my last. It might be 13+ pages, but I would venture to guess that more than 10 of those pages were a pissing match. I just kind of hop-scotched through some posts after reading the first 3 pages.

Sorry to move the conversation off the bubble, as my thoughts and prayers are with his family as well.

"Not that I care if we get him but he likely would apply for a waiver since he's trying to play closer to his dying mother (see Tyler Smith)...though he probably wouldn't win that fight unless he went to the Gophers"

"We already know Fred and staff are recruiting him as Royce said yesterday. Among others........."

"I certainly don't think we NEED him, but he'd be nice to have."

Don't think compassion isn't there...

There are some questionable posters on CF, yes, but don't think Lockett's family situation is lost there or is not considered.

It's a terrible situation for anyone.

Well said!! I also send my best to the Lockett family.

My prayers go out to the young man and his family as well. Hopefully Trent's mother can overcome the issues she is facing.

I'm not excited about a player who averaged 3.2 turnovers per game...

He played 35 mpg and basically had to do it all for his team. He had very little help. Let's focus on the positives. He shot 50% from the field. 41% on 3's. 13ppg. 6rpg. The main guy you run your offense through is going to have a few TO's in a game. Draymond Green averaged 3 TPG in 33 minutes. Is he horrible? How about Royce and his 3.8 TPG? Is he terrible? No, they just have the ball a ton and occasionally make a mistake. I'm not sure you have seen him play if all you can zone in on is 3.2 TO's in 35MPG. And not to mention, is a family guy that cares about his mom so much to be closer to her during her difficult health situation.

Best to his Mom and his family. Really terrible and sad situation.

It's hard not to start thinking ahead if he did decide to come here. His addition along with the return of Trevor and Mo, to a team that really isn't losing anything--- you could really have something special.

Actually, Minnesota is the closest big six school to the Twin Cities.

Congratulations to both Iowa State and the University of Minnesota for their post-season basketball success. I am a native South Dakotan who has always cheered for the Gophers. In fact, my youngest daughter just graduated from the University of Minnesota. But in my opinion, one place that Trent might take a look at is South Dakota State University. They are fresh off their first NCAA tournament appearance and finished with a 27-8 record. They graduated only one player and Trent could be paired with point guard Nate Wolters, a potential NBA draft pick. Plus, they could surround him with three other starters who all shot over 40 percent from the 3-point line. I also think they have a very good chance of winning the Summit League again next year. I know it is not a Big-6 conference, but they are close to the Twin Cities and it would be worth some consideration.

Seriously? C'mon!

I agree that there is a slight possibility that Lockett may look at SDSU, but this point is just ridiculous. If he came here, he'd be playing with two very likely NBA draft picks, and one (in Andre Hollins) who, if he keeps playing this well, has a very very good shot too.

I was only suggesting that it would be a possibility. But if you take a closer look at all the schools in the area, I think SDSU has a good or better chance of playing in the Big Dance than the other teams. In the last five years ISU has been there once and do you think their chances next year got better or worse with Royce White leaving? The University of Iowa has not been in the tournament and are still rebuilding. The Gophers have been there twice, but have never finished better than 6th in the the Big Ten regular season. I like their team coming back, but it is a great league and it is not easy to make it to the tournament. Plus, with all the swing players the Gophers have coming back his minutes would not be as great as they would be at SDSU.

I like the Gophers' chances of finishing better than 6th in the Big Ten next year, particularly if Mbakwe is back and healed and moreso if Lockett comes to the U. Past performance does not predicate a future performance.

Note that the Gophers beat SDSU this past year, even with a lot of problems early season. I don't think it's wrong for you to hope Lockett goes to SDSU, why shouldn't you? However, I'm not sure about how solid your logic is behind these things; for instance, your insinuation that Lockett would choose SDSU over the U because he'd have a better chance at getting to the NCAA Tournament, as if that's the #1 item on his mind, and as if that statement has much merit, regardless.

I hope you are right and the Gophers win the Big Ten, but Indiana, Purdue, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ohio State keep making it difficult for second tier teams to move up.

NDSU will be much better next year. Oral Roberts is always good, Oakland only loses one guy of value. The Summit is only going to send one team, so I wouldn't be so sure that his best chance to go dancing would be with the Jackrabbits.

My question to you is did the rabbits back off Jalen Bradley? I was on a staff two years ago in Nebraska, and he was unstoppable. I thought he would have been a great hard nosed point guard that could have thrived under your coach. UNO's gain I guess.

From a basketball perspective, Lockett wants to showcase himself for the NBA. I am sure he'd have the following questions about coming to Minnesota and playing for Tubby Smith:

I played 34.9 minutes per game at ASU, will I get similar playing time at Minnesota? (Nobody on the roster averaged that much time this year)
If Trevor Mbakwe comes back, am I the 4th option behind Trevor, Rodney, and Andre?
Does the potential exposure of playing for an (on paper) very strong team outweigh playing time/shots that may be available elsewhere?

Good question on the potential exposure of playing on a strong team vs. Playing time. Good post, I thought about the same thing. However he had all the playing time in the world if he would have stayed at asu. His need to be close to his mom was the most important issue for him.

Trent is a very good player, but I don't think he is in a position to dictate playing time whereever he goes.

I'd think that Tubby has told him something along the lines of this. "The way you perform in practice will dictate how much you play in the game". That's always been Tubby's philosophywith players.

Is Lockett a NBA talent? If so I understand the exposure question.

If not, it's all about a good time (locker room chemistry) and winning, which this team has the potential to be very high in both regards. I've heard and read that this group of players gets along quite well, adding another local guy would only help.

Has there been any info that suggests that the the Gophers aren't interested in Lockett? Excluding Sid this morning?

Probably on the outside in my book but close enough that a good senior year against improved competition could put him on the inside. Others may have different opions.

I agree, NDSU had a good young team and will be good. Oral Roberts is switching to the Southland Conference. Oakland is well-coached and has been the premier team in the league recently. Western Illinois will be a factor as well. I still like the "Rabbits" chances though. I cannot answer to the recruitment of Jalen Bradley, but they have signed two players so far. Connor Devine 6-10, Alaska High School POY and Jake Bittle 6-4, combo guard from Oklahoma. I believe they have one scholarship available.

I looked it up, late 2nd rounder projection. I would have to agree no chance he goes to sdsu and he wants to play, with the ball.

sdsu preseason summit favorite. Lockett would make them a big favorite. The U is the only D1 program close to home.

That South Dakota campus is like 6 hours from his mom...not exactly close. He might as well go to Wisconsin or NW before SDSU.

If it takes you 6 hours to get to Brookings from the metro, you're doing something wrong.
