Trent Lockett granted release to be "closer to home" UPDATED (4/10): Marq Leading

No offense intended, Bleed. It's a zinger toward the conference, not the schools. Something about "San Diego" State and Big "East" just doesn't add up. ... ditto for Boise!

Ha! Touche...yea, nothing says East like So Cal and Idaho!

Go Gophers!!

Sort of like how 12 teams don't equal (Big) 10? :p At least all the schools in the Big East are technically east of something (I agree, the name 'Big East' is goofy).

I can't keep up with who is in, who is out, what year, what sport(s), etc. anymore. I wish the conferences would settle again for awhile and stop moving.

No matter the number of schools it has, the Big Ten Conference would be stupid beyond belief to fiddle with its name. Jim Delany is no dummy. It's the brandest of brand names among college institutions, so they're not going to mess with it.

Agree that the merry-go-round needs to stop pretty soon, though one good side affect might be that an extra at-large bid in basketball might become available in a couple years when Conference USA/Mountain West merge.

Tweet from Doogie:

"Told that T. Lockett will not need a waiver to play immediately. He'll have his degree in a few weeks. Gonzaga, Marq., ISU the most in play."

Go Gophers!!

I suppose we just don't have an available scholly for Trent and Tubby was not going to push anyone off the team for a 1 year player. It's a pity it won't work out though. I'd love to have him.

I'm thinking that's probably not the issue.

Not a fan of the graduate transfer rule that provides immediate eligibility (theory is fine, in practice it usually is b.s.), but if it continues to exist in its current form I wonder if we won't see more kids trying to rack up credits at a pace sufficient to graduate in three years. With summer school and basketball players often getting through some classes before the fall semester begins, it's very doable.

Instead of a group of one-and-dones coming together after high school for a year at a university, we'll have a group of stud graduates coming together at one school for their fourth year of competition. Sickening thought, but won't be surprised if we see it sometime down the line.

Agreed. Hope he and his mother do well.

We are very full at the off guard though, but I think the only chance at Trent getting a scholly here is if Austin offers to be a walk on for a year (His dad is rich ...) and Trent uses the scholarship. Unlikely due to the fact he'd take minutes from Austin possibly an Lionel doesn't seem to involved with Gopher basketball.

Other possibility, Ingram (a Sr.) currently is behind Trev, Mo, and EE and possibly Oto (I'd assume) and decides he wants to play more, But having come from JUCO knowing the situation, I doubt that happens, plus don't know if he's already sat out a year?

Welch has sat a year, so he's not leaving.

Mav really seems to like it here and be okay with his role, he's a good guy to keep and have on the team for that reason.

Also the extreme off chance NCAA lets us use an extra scholly for Trevor and then sign Trent (I'd put that at 2% ... Seriously)

While it'd be nice to get Trent and I'd love for him to be so close to his mom, it looks like it just won't work and as much as I wanted him and he'd Make us a great team I think, props to tubby for not forcing anyone out and sticking with his guys, we will still be a force in the Big 10 and should make the tournament!

+1

Not to sound like I am contradicting myself, but I am often of the win at all costs without cheating mind set. If running a player off would have gotten us Trent and more wins I wouldn't have been mad at all.

However, I respect the heck out of the fact Tubby feels differently and stuck with that and put himself on the line so as to not cut someone. He had/has to know what Trent could do for this team and in turn his reputation, but he stuck with his principles and possibly sacrificed personal glory and maybe even a bigger raise for it.

That said, I am sure the fact we didn't really go after Trent / he didn't sign here out of high school may have played some part (Luke warm feelings about each other) as well as the fact that GW alluded to, he isn't a great shooter, and Joe already fits that description at the 2. We may be better off with getting Joe the playing time now than we'd be taking his minutes for Trent and possibly upsetting Joe at worst or stunting his development at best.

Interesting thought, but in today's early-entry environment they can't be that "studly" if they're still playing college bb in their 4th year. I wouldn't be surprised if more "solid" players like Lockett do this, though--namely, escape a program gone south to have one last chance at a winning year and maybe a better situation to give them a shot at the pros.

I have to wonder about the timing of the Armelin announcement. There are reports that Vince Taylor has had contact with Lockett, and the Gophers are interested, and reports that Lockett and his mom prefer him to come here. But we're not going to publicly express interest at a time we have no scholarship to give. I have to believe that Tubby and the Gophers really wanted to avoid this Armelin business coming out until they got a decision on the request for a 14th scholarship, which was supposed to be coming shortly. Which means, I wonder if the "source" was someone close to Armelin who just didn't care if it got out. All in all, a very unfortunate development. Lockett doesn't appear to be any superstar, but you have to think he'd definitely be another weapon that could help us.

Do you really think the NCAA would allow the Gophers to keep the 14th scholarship after a player has transferred out?

I don't know, it depends on what was asked for and what was granted, exactly. (E.g., did we request a "14th scholarship," or simply "an additional scholarship should no others open up," and what did the NCAA grant?) It sure seemed like the U thought it could make a difference, and maybe still does.

If you asked *should* the NCAA grant an extra scholarship for Trevor when we now know that we're losing a transfer anyway, so we can turn around and use the extra scholly on an incoming transfer ... well, that's obviously a different question.

A group of stud graduate basketball players, who graduate in three years and then attending the same college. Sorry I think that is very unlikely.

I don't have a problem with the rule, if you have graduated, you should be able to switch to any school you wish to begin the grad school/program of your choice and use your last year of eligibility.

Damn, that's a tough miss not getting Trent. He would have made an immediate impact much like a McDonalds All American does as a freshman. Tough, tough miss. Minnesota should be fine, but a born leader and super talent like Trent would have put this team in the top 15 to start the season.

Super Talent? McDonald All American? He wasn't even Pac 12 honorable mention in a terrible conference.

I think he could add some nice depth, but he's not a program changer.

When did Trent pick a school? Did I miss it?

I thought you weren't comingback to this board? Make up your mind.

BGF was just saying that Lockett would average just as much if not more points per game than the average incoming McDonalds All-American, which is true. Lockett would also bring experience and leadership.

I disagree. He would seen far less shots for a better, deeper team than ASU. He wasn't the leading scorer on a terrible ASU team.

I question whether Tubby ever contacted him other to express his best wishes to his mother. We're a top 25 team right now and a transfer from a 10-21 team is going to propel us to a top 15 team at our deepest postion? I'm not even sure he can beat out Austin. I certainly wish Trent the best, but sharing minutes with Austin, Joe and Welch makes no sense for anyone, even if we could magically come up with another tender.

I am ok with not having Lockett. He is a decent player and probably would have helped this team but looking at the roster we have coming back at this point I dont think he was a huge need. He would have added depth but coming in for one year may have limited his impact on the program. Its to bad he couldnt have joined the team earlier in his career. I am stoked about the upcoming year no matter if Lockett is playing or not.

+1 It would be great to have him, but next year should be fun regardless. He was not the make or break player for us.. that said, would welcome him with open arms if it were to happen. Next season cannot arrive soon enough

Viewing the Lockett situation as "house money". Would be a nice early Christmas present if we get him, but I still like the roster if he decides to go to Ames, Milwaukee or Spokane. Just don't want to see him in Madison or Iowa City, which doesn't sound like will be the case.

You obviously haven't seen Lockett play that much. Like I said, Gophers will be fine, but I feel like people are underestimating the impact TL would have had on this team.

So curious - he left to be closer to his mom so is closer just to get out of the PAC 12?

What reaction would a truly great post get? Super spectacular greatest post in history?

Corrected. I should have said szhit post. How do you miss on a guy who hasn't selected a school. If a scholarship opens up, I would put the Gophers as his number one option.

Damn, that's a tough miss not getting Trent.

Tough, tough miss.

Correct. TL would start the majority of the year.

Andre-Trent-Austin-Rodney-Mbakwe. First off the bench and occasional starters: Welch, Joe, EE (maybe Mo).
