Trent Lockett granted release to be "closer to home" UPDATED (4/10): Marq Leading

We're talking about the kid from the 10-21 team from a horrible conference who didn't make the All-Conference team (10 players), All-Conference second team (5 players), or All-Conference honorable mention (6 players) in this especially bad 2011-12 season for the PAC-12, right?

Not knocking the kid, but I don't see him turning Minnesota from whatever they are now to a team with "an embarrassment of riches".

But you just knocked him. :banghead: when people use the word "but", which means they are about to contradict themselves.

Remember, the working assumption for some is that Lockett will graduate prior to the beginning of next season and thus he'd be able to find an almost sure-shot way to have immediate eligibility at another school without a hardship waiver.

If* Lockett had been planning to leave ASU for quite some time (which is my feeling, but nothing more), it might be more accurate to say that he is transferring from ASU because he wanted to get out of there and play elsewhere. At this point in time, a big factor in deciding exactly where he wants to play is the location of his family.

Now, if I am ASU I'd much rather describe the situation as, "the young man is leaving because of a family medical matter, period" instead of, "yet another good player is leaving our program because he'd rather play elsewhere... oh and by the way, now there is an family illness that is playing into the decision on where he'll transfer and even if he didn't want out of our program, he'd be looking at transfer options"...

My take on him and the U is that he's not the best fit for the Gophers right now. If he has a strong desire to be in the Twin Cities because of the medical concerns it would be great if they could find a way to fit him at the U and keep everyone in the program happy, but I don't think another wing is what Tubby needs (unless they are a big time sniper from deep).

Okay, got it. Thanks for clarifying, GW.

But you just knocked him. :banghead: when people use the word "but", which means they are about to contradict themselves.

There is no contradiction. Saying a player isn't enough to turn a program from something lesser to a team with "an embarrassment of riches" is not a knock. "Player X is not super human" isn't ripping a guy. You may know butts, but buts? Maybe not, but maybe so.

This is quite disappointing news to be honest. A bona-fide all-conference player like Trent Lockett could have put this team over the top (in the short term). With Lockett, Tubby would have had an embarrassment of riches not seen in this program in quite some time. And for those of you who think he wouldn't be a good fit: Give me a break. He is a selfless player and strong leader with tremendous basketball skill and savvy. This program doesn't have the luxury of saying things like "he doesn't fit in our system." You make room for a player like Lockett.

What is disappointing? Did Tubby say that we don't want Trent? No one in any position that matters has said anything meaningful. Our season just ended 3 days ago and Trent has 4-5 more weeks of classes. Tubby and his staff probably haven't even started seriously working on this yet. They got back to Minnesota Friday (assumption) and probably took the weekend off. Give them some time before you start putting on your doom-and-gloom hat that you wear all too often. I wouldn't be surprised if Trent doesn't make a decision for a few weeks.

we have lots of guards, why would we want another, especially one that would be our best sg, a solid ball handeler, defender, rebounder and a senior leader.

Tubby is in New Orleans for the Final Four, so I doubt any decisions have been made either way on the construct of this team next year. Next week, Tubby will talk to all his players and then you'll start seeing some wheels in motions. I would be shocked if not a single player transfers. I think Mav may go, which would free up a scholly for Lockett.

Trent coming to Minnesota would also make us a better rebounding team. His rebounding prowess would essentially make up for Austin's (lack of) rebounding ability.

trent was 2nd team all pac ten as a soph. Very versatile player who would start and do well as a GOPH. THESCOUT!

Having trouble finding a negative to adding a player of Lockett's versatility to the Gophers' roster. I like the thought of adding a 3rd frontcourt/wing player (Mbakwe & Walker) to what we played with this season. If Lockett's 1st choice is come to the U, one way or another there will be room for him.

If there is a scholarship open, I agree, it's a no-brainer. If our staff has to "make a scholarship" open, I don't think he's worth it. He is a very good player and I wish we would have recruited him out of HS. That said, he does play a position where we are relatively deep (the wings) and I don't think 1 season of Lockett would be worth the bad buzz on the recruiting trail that would undoubtedly come from "Tubby cutting a player" or "Tubby lied to his players".

I get what you're saying about Tubby pushing a kid off the team but I think any negative that comes from that would be far outweighed by say, a Sweet 16 appearance.

At least Lockett's turnover rate is in line with the rest of the team.

Which I'm sure had nothing to do with the quality of his teammates and the amount of time he spent handling the ball, especially considering he played point for part of the year.

I'm going with it's this, along with playing PG despite being off-guard. Last year he actually had a higher Usage% but had a lower TO%

You hate the gophers, we get it. What we don't get is why you are an obsessive poster.

We have a good core coming back, we are adding Mo and probably Trevor and Trent. Sucks to be you Gopher hater.

Exactly right. I give Lockett a 2% chance of being an all big ten caliber player.

Sweet. Now if only a certain someone made the same prediction, I'd feel pretty confident about it coming true, given his recent track record, of course.

And Spokane, Washington is just around the corner from Minneapolis. I don't get this one.

Minneapolis and Spokane are sometimes considered neighbor cities because there is absolutely nothing between them, but I get what you are saying. I went to Gonzaga for my first year of law school, so I know the flight from Spokane to Minneapolis is about 3 hours and 20 minutes. Not sure that is all that close to his Mom, but if he graduates it won't matter because he won't need a waiver.

Gonzaga makes a lot of sense??? In the end I bet his buddy Royce pushes him into Iowa St.

To destroy future recruiting, anything less than a Final Four is accepting mediocrity.

If he graduates then a waiver is not needed, the hardship angle won't matter. However, by citing your mom's illness as a concern to play close to home for leaving school, going to Washington will raise eyebrows. Playing at Gonzaga, a fine school, will mean it has zero to do with mom. Which is fine, just a perception out there about why he left Zona..

I don't think Trent ever said that he was transferring because of his mom, but I may be wrong. I think it was only ASU said that, perhaps to prevent backlash about their best player transferring.

This was a statement released by Lockett:

"With the recent news of my mother's illness, I want to be honest with everyone and say that it is in my best interest to possibly pursue playing my final season closer to home," Lockett said in a statement. "At this time, my energy and focus needs to start now on being as close to my mom as I can while at the same time pursuing career goals with one year of college basketball remaining."

Doogie also tweeted that The Gophers are definitley on his list, among other teams.

OT: Thanks to James Harden, I now picture that every ASU player has that same beard. If Trent comes here, it will be a real adjustment for me to watch him without it. I'll just assume he shaved it off before arrival.

yes - dower and lockett played together with NET GAIN - funny that chanse also played for NET GAIN, and is also leaving ASU...whats going on at ASU.
