Trent Lockett granted release to be "closer to home" UPDATED (4/10): Marq Leading

Would it be possible to give trent an academic scholarship? From what I've read he is a good student and takes academics very seriously.

Tweet from Doogie:

@DarrenWolfson: Clarification on Lockett & the #Gophers: while he has thought about them, they have yet to reach out to him. Many others have.

This is unacceptable if true.

In this age of nothing being secret, it might be a good idea to sit down with your own players and discuss their future before reaching out to a player who would replace them. I'm sure he knows that they would like to have him if a 2nd opening occurs. Trevor first of course.

This is unacceptable if true.
Well with already needing one opening just to keep Trevor, it makes sense to wait for Tubby to talk to each player to explain to them their situations and see if they transfer.

Not really.

I'll rephrase. I'm not even saying they should've had to roll out the red carpet and cut someone to offer him a scholarship upfront. But to not even contact him, not even give him a phone call to wish him the best with his family if nothing else, is poor.

I don't have a ton of doubt we'll have at least 1 transfer, perhaps 2, I just guess I don't want to be behind the ball on having Lockett come home if that's ultimately what he decides. Indecisiveness can kill you, and having Hoiberg swoop on someone like that especially when the U makes far and away the most sense, would be a massive mistake on Tubby's part.

Perhaps Tubby is just slow playing this to get more definitive answers, but I just hope we are moving as quickly on this as we can.

Doogie likes to throw things out there. Other reports indicate Lockett and the Gopher Staff have talked. I'm not sure Doogie has all the facts on this topic.

Maybe not all the facts, but from Lockett's inner circle, as of yesterday afternoon, Tubby hadn't requested permission to talk with Lockett. Now, Vince Taylor has a relationship with Lockett, so it's possible he and Trent have talked, but not Tubby.

An aside: as Tubby acknowledged today, Vince is also looking at bettering his situation, so not 100% he's back here. So, who knows if a different situation came up if they indeed talked.

Thanks for the info Doogie! Unlike a handful on here as it seems some days, I actually enjoy seeing you post around here!

IMO, Doogie does as good of job as any local reporter when he interviews people (usually appropriate, fair, insightful and good follow up questions). He's also one of the leaders in the local sports reporting community in engaging with fans. Keep it up Doogie.

Go Gophers!!

Thanks. I love interacting with passionate fans, and hard to deny that everyone on here falls into that category. Sometimes facts, and I can be guilty of this too, are not always right, but I still enjoy the bi-play.

In addition, after KFAN let me go and my time with GI expired after that spring practice, Nadine & Mr. Litt reached out to me. For that, I remain very grateful.

 (I sure hope you mean byplay, otherwise, there's a seedy underbelly to this board that I wasn't aware of).

Anyway, yeah, it's nice having you, Doogie. Even if I disagree with you. Not many in this town are man enough to face the music, so you have my respect. (And when I say face the music, I don't mean anger the fans for the fun of it like Reusse and PMac or other stooges in twin cities media, I mean actually show up and have a reasonable discussion with people who disagree with you). And you've never written a column as bad as Souhan's best.

Funny.

Yes, would probably be tough to enjoy the bi-play, so thank you, byplay.

You can take that back if you want - Doogie has contacts.

ASU Hoops' Trent Lockett named to Pac-12 All-Academic team

It would be great if we could get him on some sort of academic related financial aid. Also from the article:

Reports recently surfaced that Lockett was set to visit Gonzaga this weekend but that is not accurate. A source close to the situation, however, says Gonzaga is a possibility. Iowa State, Creighton and Marquette also have shown interest. Minneapolis media have reported Minnesota is in the mix.

I get the feeling that the Gophers and Lockett are not really interested in each other. It's just hope\talk on the fans part.

I disagree. I just think tubby won't "run a player off" as he said and isn't going to go after him without a scholarship to offer.

+1 Since he has has NBA aspirations it makes no sense to come here where he'll get probably no more than 20 minutes per game. I think he's a solid player, but I certainly understand why Tubby has not officially contacted him.

Tubby won't run off a player and he won't start building a squad on 15 year olds as you proposed. That's fanboard fantasy.

howieramone, you are much more politically correct than I. You call it fanboard fantasy, I call it babble!

I am quite confident in my statement indicating Lockett and the Gopher staff have had some conversation because the source that provided the information has more contacts than Doogie. With that being said, I would be surprised if Lockett ends up at MN. With Lockett's list of candidate schools it is also becoming obvious that the reason for leaving ASU was not completely tied to being closer to home.

Looks like he wants to play in a lesser league with the Big ?

"Big Eas(y) to Get Into" is the most apt description I've heard. How else do you explain adding the likes of Houston, SMU, UCF, Navy, San Diego State, Boise State, etc., for some sports but not others? It will remain a place to find high quality college basketball, but to call it a "conference" is a joke.

Jae Crowder averaged 17.5 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 2.5 steals, and shot 49.8% from the field. Johnson-Odom averaged 18.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.7 assists. Combined they scored 46.9% of Marquette's points . Marquette will be a different team without these two. We definitely have the potential to be a better team than them.

I think so too. Kinda sad if he is using his Mom's cancer to get out of ASU though. I don't know that's the case, just hope it's not.

Hey, I take offense to that! I worked my ass off on my GMAT test to get into San Diego State's business school! :D

Go Gophers!!

No offense intended, Bleed. It's a zinger toward the conference, not the schools. Something about "San Diego" State and Big "East" just doesn't add up. ... ditto for Boise!
