Official 2016 Recruiting Updates Thread: Links, Tweets, Videos, Stories, Rumors, etc.

Love it!

Per STrib Q&A:

Q: What is it like being part of such a solid recruiting class with so many in-state recruits?

A: Guys understood where me and (fellow recruit and Eden Prairie linebacker) Carter (Coughlin) were coming from. We wanted to build it brick by brick. People don’t think we can win, and that’s what’s going to take us far in the Big Ten, hopefully to a Big Ten championship.

Q: What are your goals for your Minnesota career?

A: I want to be the best defensive tackle Minnesota has ever had. I also wanted to leave a mark with my hard work. I’ll never turn down anybody. I’ll always be here to help any kid.

Go Gophers!!

Tralund Webber, a JUCO DE from Blinn, Texas will be on an official visit June 18. He's said we're in the lead for him, so a commitment could follow soon. He has one of the most unbelievable highlight videos for a DE that I've seen, would be great get and potentially an immediate starter. http://www.hudl.com/athlete/4574983/tralund-webber

Tyler Johnson & JD Spielman, the 2016 Gopher ship is setting sail pretty soon. I wouldn't dilly dally too long if you want to be golden.

I would not be surprised if we land two or three JC players: Tralund Weber, Vincent Calhoun, Walvenski Aime.

Expect quite a bit of activity tomorrow because gophers hold their camp tomorrow. I know Tyler Johnson will be there, not sure who else. If anyone knows of other recruits who are attending please let us know.

Are we going to run out of schollies? I don't ever remember this many commitments this early. We may have the rare opportunity to be very selective on the last 5-8 guys.

How many are we expected to take for this class? I browsed through Big Ten 2016 classes at this point, and Indiana and Purdue are still sitting at one commit.

I want this kid bad!

No doubt. While I understand that he is playing against inferior competition across the line.....when you see him get out in space.....there is little question that this guy could be a superstar. Sign him up!

11) Dave Mona wanted to know the number of Gopher scholarships available in the 2016 recruiting class:

“It’s looking like 23-24,” Kill answered.
From DL65 report on sunday morning 5/17

Maple Grove O-lineman Kayode Awosika got offered by Iowa State this morning. Thats now 11 in-staters with p5 offers, 13 including Seth Green and the East Ridge WR that transferred to IMG academy plus 3 more with FBS offers albeit solely from EMU for all 3 of them.

Patrick Kasl offered by Wisconsin. 12/14 in-staters and 5 OL with p5 offers now.

Wisconsin has had a very strange recruiting year this year, one that makes no sense to me, and from lurking on their forums the fan base does not seem happy with the results so far. They have struck out with every major recruit so far including a instate kid to western michigan, the same program they made fun of us for beating out for recruits. They also never offered fairly rated OL from Wisconsin and another from Mizzou who they probably would have been in drivers seat for, most assumed it was because they were going after 2 highly thought of recruits from Wisconsin, but then they go ahead an offer a kid from Minnesota who's best offer is SDSU and UND? They also offered DE from WI who only had FCS offers so far with none being from FCS powerhouse NDSU. They already have DE commited that according to 1 wisconsin poster is at best a D2 player. Their best committed recruit so far is a RB who commited while they had no coach, and there are reports that he is still being recruited by top programs. When he committed he cited that the program always has a great line and he wanted a good line to run behind, but so far they have 0 OL committed and if they strike out on their 2 stud in state lineman (reports say the better 1 of them is deciding between Mich and Dame) I can honestly see them losing their committed stud RB.

Cryst has always struggled to recruit, always been the knock on him, might not be all his fault, have to think all the coaching changes have hurt too, but things are not looking good for their program. MSU who I'd say was in the same Tier as them are completely blowing them out of the water in recruiting and are using their success to go in the right direction, sconies, not so much. I understand that recruiting isn't all about stars and you can find the diamonds in the rough, but when you are only getting players who only getting players with FCS offers, chances are most are going to be just that talent wise, FCS type players. Crazy to think that a consistently 10 win team is forced to having to accept these type of players into their program.

We might be seeing the end of an era...

We may be seeing the end of an era in Wisconsin (don't forget Alvarez is still there), the excitement is we have begun a new era at Minnesota. Thank you Regents and President Kaler for getting it rolling!

Kasl was a camp offer at Wisky. Wonder how he performs atour camp?

Saw him win the shotput at his conference meet.
He's got a legit D1 frame and size, good explosiveness, etc.
I'd be willing to bet he's got an offer from us in most years already, but I also think he may earn one at camp even if we're "full".
I've seen several D1 linemen compete in the shotput, Kasl is at least the equal physically of guys like Casey Dehn, Joe Bjorkland, Andrew Stelter, Brian Arnfelt, etc.
He's a big athletic MN kid.

Free Scout article on Philip Howard with an interesting tidbit.

"I haven't heard from too many schools as I'm a pretty solid commit," Howard explained. "I let schools know that I'm pretty solid to where I am, but Wisconsin tried jumping into the picture a few weeks after I committed. They were just telling me how much they really liked me and were disappointed to see me commit before getting a chance to see them. They kind of told me I had an offer, but I'm not really sure. I'm solid to Minnesota regardless."

Sounds like we'll also evaluate him as a D-lineman.

Free scout article on the Daniel brothers commitment with some concerning comments

http://www.scout.com/college/minnesota/story/1553032-daniels-twins-commit-to-minnesota

"I'm not sure if we'll be visiting Minnesota this summer, or just for our official visit in the fall, but it'll be soon. We still plan on taking official visits elsewhere though this fall. I want to take all five actually.

Well I'd want to take all 5 too. Free travel and being catered to would be nice

they aren't committed then, which is fine, but they aren't committed if they are still taking other visits.

Yeah if they really decide to visit elsewhere I could see the staff moving on. We'll see what happens. Their commitments are a little strange.

I doubt the staff views them as commits. They were going to commit to Pitt, but didn't because Elisha didn't get an offer. Then they "commit" to Minnesota, a school halfway across the country w/o taking a visit, 3 days after an offer??? Because Wyatt Ray, a player we recruited last year but ended up at BC, said he had a good visit here... sketchy to say the least.

The big question is; what others schools would be willing to take both of them? Their desire to stay together will narrow the competition considerably.
