Official 2014 Recruiting Updates Thread: Links, Tweets, Videos, Stories, Rumors, etc.

@deronTHETRUTH20 Deron Thompson has just tweeted he is announcing his commitment today on twitter. Are we in the mix for him?

I know he visited but not 100% certain if we gave an offer?

CSU (Go to Rivals and you'll see.)

Seems like he's been put on the back-burner. I'm sure he'd come here if we really wanted him, but it seems we don't and he's probably going to Colorado St.

Patrick Porter is set to make his announcement tomorrow. The strange thing is that he hasn't yet taken any officials, has 3 scheduled for the 2nd half of January (us, Washington St., and Toledo) and yet is announcing tomorrow. Very weird to announce in advance of your officials. At any rate, WSU seems to be the consensus.

Recruitin' Chilli's starting to cook up. I hope that what's cooking is good for the Gophers.

Sorry Gopherprof

Umm....ok.

I didn't mean to address you with my gobbly gook. Every College metropolitan area has there advantages and disadvanteges, ie, weather, jobs, housing(is expensive here), access to ammenities. My only point is the Twin Cities has a lot to offer college graduates in so far as employment opportunities(we have a disproportionate share for a metro area of our size of Fortune 500, even headquarters), and it doesn't hurt to be a U of M graduate when seeking employment opportunity in the Twin Cities. From my experience many employers look favorably on a U degree.
Because we have a lot of large corporations and small corporations and start-ups with U graduates at the helm or in the management ranks, the opportunity to network is available for people that want to make those connections, and do well in school.

If a student or an athlete positions themselves accordingly and has the time to do so(the big if, if your not just focused on making the league, at the same time, the athletes have a lot of there time monoplized by their sport ), there are quite a few opportunities for corporate internships, and networking while your in your final two years as a student at the U. College isn't for everyone, but if it is important to a perspective students goals ( getting a degree) and the their parents as a student athlete the U as apart of the Twin Cities metro area has opportunity's to offer.

Deron makes it official that he's going to CSU. Didn't have a commitable offer from us.

I kind of saw that coming. He seems like a good kid. I wish him well at CSU.

per Shama on McKinzy and Poock, not sure why Shama just didn't name them:

Expect a high school quarterback and junior college linebacker to enroll at the University of Minnesota later this month. Both would take part in spring football, with the quarterback having four years of eligibility and the linebacker three.

Go Gophers!!

I would like to see McKinzy at cb

"In state schools have shown us a Lil interest but they aren't LSU.....Melvin is an SEC baller 4 sure" read a few more of these and try telling me he isn't going to LSU if they offer
Maybe but when LSU is pursuing the number one wide receiver in the country and already has 3 wide receivers and an athlete that projects as a wide receiver committed. The chances of LSU offering are tiny.

Too big and not even remotely in the ballpark of being close to fast enough. He's more likely to play LB than CB.

McKinzy will be playing QB. I'm not sure why it's so difficult for people to come to terms with that.

Agreed. I have never ready anything (outside this forum) that has suggested otherwise.

PiPress: Gophers football: QB recruit Dimonic McKinzy getting an early start

Gophers coach Jerry Kill didn't want to talk about the quarterback competition for spring practice, but he did say he needs somebody to "emerge."

"Who is going to emerge?" Kill asked. "This is usually when it happens. I'm excited about seeing Dimonic."

McKinzy, a three-star recruit, passed for 2,527 yards and 26 touchdowns with 14 interceptions as a senior in 2013. He also rushed for 519 yards and nine touchdowns.

"They told me they want to see me make plays," McKinzy said. "They want a playmaker at the quarterback position. For myself, I want to come in with the mind-set to ask questions. I don't want to come in and act like I know everything. I want to be able to learn from the coaches and my teammates to elevate my game for the college level."

The staff is recruiting him as a QB, but he's been talked about as a DB because his offers from Nebraska and Iowa were to play DB.

Tegray Scales set up an OV for January 24. Great job getting this kid on campus, he could end up as the #1 recruit on defense.

Here's hoping we have the weather we're having this weekend instead of what we had earlier in the week when Scales hits town. Of course, it was cold in Ohio (heck, it was cold in Georgia) those days as well.

Seriously, Scales would be a huge get for us.

Porter committed to Washington St. this morning. Not sure if he still plans to take all his officials.

+1

Not sure why anyone would want him to play anything else. Dude has potential to be pretty good at QB here (eventually). This board generally speaking doesn't like our QBs, but want to take a legit QB prospect and move him???

I agree he'll play QB, but he's not "too big" or "too slow" at all & people with much better opinions than yourself think he can play CB. He played CB in High School at a very high level and his tape was equally good or better than his QB tape. There is zero doubt he could play CB at the college level if he wanted to (which he clearly doesn't). He was offered by Nebraska as a CB & passed on that more prestigious offer because he wanted a school that would let him play QB, which is why he focused on Minnesota & Iowa. Here's one Rivals recruiting snippet I found:

"God blessed me with the skills to be a quarterback," McKinzey said. "It's the place I can use my skills and blessings as an advantage."

His take on the matter is also how he defines his early pecking order. McKinzey currently claims scholarship offers from Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska. The way he separates them is simple:

The Hawkeyes and Golden Gophers hold an early edge because they see him in the same light in which he sees himself.

"Nebraska is so-so because they are also interested in me to play (cornerback), and that's not what I want to go play," he said. "But … but I don't have a problem playing defense. I love football, so I'll play any position but I love quarterback. That's what I am. That's what has worked out."

It's too soon to tell how other schools perceive McKinzy. The junior says he gets frequent letters from Kansas State, Ole Miss, Oregon, Vanderbilt, Iowa State, Michigan and UCLA. In his opinion, Vandy and Ole Miss are the closest to making things official, but at which position isn't clear.

I also found MV's (who's opinion most people respect) commitment article on McKinzy

Above everything else, McKinzy brings position versatility, something paramount for a team that has limited scholarships to give this cycle and a program that places a premium on putting athleticism to best use. Much like Donovahn Jones, Chris Streveler and Mitch Leidner, McKinzy will certainly get a look (in some cases, probably more than a look) at quarterback before evaluating whether a position change is warranted.

Still, this is a Kill-type quarterback recruit to the letter. Very good ability to escape pressure, move in the pocket and throw on the run. Athletic ability to play safety or corner at the next level if quarterback doesn't work out; his corner and safety highlights from the above YouTube do show a nice physicality to his game as a defender.

I'd be a happy fan if the Gophers found a way to get Jones, Ragnow, Holland, Scales and James. Those 5 would be huge gets. I also like Gentry at WR.

Happy? I'd do cartwheels if we got 2 or 3 of them.

Love it.

I wouldn't count Arkansas out though.

Where did wisconsin come from for Ragnow? I havent heard anything about their involvement until now.

The pessimistic Gopher fan in me thinks this is similar to Reid Travis locking out Gopher fans at his announcement. No reporters because he knows he is leaving the state. Hopefully I am Samsonite (waaaay off) with that gut instinct.
