Official 2014 Recruiting Updates Thread: Links, Tweets, Videos, Stories, Rumors, etc.

Looks good to me. We need speed like that. Physically similar to Randy Moss as far as height and weight.

Every recruit is bound to look good in their highlight/hudl film. It's what they do play in and play out throughout the whole game. So why they may look like a good athlete or have good size, we really don't know he deserves anything other than some MAC offers at this time. Watching a whole game or two would give us more of an idea of if he could make an impact here.

True, but I can only judge what I can see. I would argue that they aren't useless though. I can compare this kids tape to some others and make a judgement, of course I'm not a professional coach or anything so it's not worth much, but it's fun to predict.

It kind of confused me that we were going after a JuCo DE for a couple reasons. First, this is a smallish class. Second, we have quite a bit of depth at DE (Cockran, Amafuela, Perry, Keith (also Salzwedal and maybe Ekpe (he might grow into a DT)). However, this would balance the DE position. Amafuela and Perry will be SRs. Cockran and Keith will be JRs. Ekpe will be a SO and Salzwedal will be a FR. So it could make sense to have another upperclassmen replacement for the seniors on the depth chart. However, after I started going through the classes and the depth at DE, I decided to watch his highlights, and. . . I should've just kept it simple. This kid's tape is really impressive. He is a playmaker.

I agree, he is doing everything in that tape. You can't have too many good d-lineman, we certainly don't. It's a tough position to recruit, I'm all for grabbing talent there when you can.

The Gophers have offered (dependent on an incoming ACT score) and set an official with another tall, fast, under-the-radar type WR named Isaiah Gentry from Ohio. He's currently committed to Kent State. I think Holland's highlights are slightly more impressive but I really like how Gentry catches the ball with his hands. His visit is Jan. 24th.

I'd love to pair him with Holland. One can dream of having two receivers like that opposite each other.

Florida St gets 3rd OT to commit today and has an OG and C committed as well. Frank less likely to head to sunshine state.

I wouldnt mind picking up Gentry, Holland and Baker. All three are tall and athletic. I'm sure one could be moved to safety if necessary. Can't have too much athleticism.

I can't lie that I would be pretty bummed if Frank spurned us for Wisconsin (must not think nasty thoughts).

Baker supposedly not taking any more visits after this weekend to UK, and supposedly "still solid" with Kentucky

Yeah, I actually like Amafuela and Keith, but I hear you. I guess my main point was that teams usually recruit JuCo when they have a big need (depth and no one in the pipeline), we don't appear to be in that situation.
Depends how much you think DE productivity (primarily Cockran) was helped by Hageman occupying blockers in the middle.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think a DT has that much impact on what happens on the outside during most passing plays. Cockran (and most other DE's) are going to be one on one with the tackle no matter who is in the middle.

I think a DT actually has quite a bit to do with productivity of the DEs. With Hageman, opposing QBs were less likely to "step up" into the pocket to avoid pressure and a lot of the help (RB chips, rolling away, etc.) were focused on Hageman.

I don't think it does matter much when looking at our depth. They might not be a good because we no longer have Hageman, but the fact remains that we are returning a lot of DEs who have plenty of game experience. It's not like our WR situation was this year where we were forced to play 2 true freshman.

I'm not arguing that Hageman didn't have an impact on their productivity, I'm arguing that with or without Hageman we have enough DEs where we wouldn't need to be recruiting a JuCo DE for depth.

Claeys' scheme seems to have the DEs pretty wide and shooting upfield off the snap. I think the fact that Hageman often took two blockers may have helped some, but the our DEs seem to be set wide enough that it would be hard to double them consistently. This impression is just from my viewing. I may have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about or if what I think I'm seeing is actually happening.

We can use an upgrade opposite Cockran. Amafaela is just Ok. Keith is also Ok, although he's younger and played hurt for much for the year. Perry is a depth player. Ekpe is another body, but not an impact player at this point.

Canty doesn't seem as fast as Holland and Gentry. More of a slot guy.

Yeah, I thought Amaefula played better as a soph than last year as a junior. I was really high on him, but he didn't stand out this year.

I love the fact that we can now go after JUCOs not because we need them, but because they are outstanding football players.

Demetrius hill is good, he has a grade of 77 on ESPN and since he is a juco guy instead of a HS recruit he will be able to contribute right away, I wouldn't be shocked if ends up starting over amaefula, in 2 years our DEs could possibly be the best unit of the team with Cockran, Keith, Hill and Jashon, big if obviously but fun to contemplate that situation

Stelter looks like a DE to me too he has good feet I hope he stays out there vs moving to DT.

Holland is tearing it up today. It's only a matter of time he gets some bigger offers IMO.
