Official 2014 Recruiting Updates Thread: Links, Tweets, Videos, Stories, Rumors, etc.

Verbal commit wish list: OT - Ragnow, WRs - Baker & Holland, CB - James, ILB - Poock, OLB - Scales, RB - Thompson

Cody Poock looks like a solid LB, I think he would be a nice addition.

he has a very good offer list from Missouri, Iowa, Indiana, Syracuse, Iowa State, Kansas and Northern Illinois, and his 247 crystal ball is predicted 86% to Minnesota

His film is great. He'd be a guy that could play right away, if needed.

Actually, Henry had several big catches over the course of the season (probably only six or seven catches, but I think every one of them was clutch - and he did have one key drop as well).

Costa Rican's note about Matilus being moved to fullback was the first I've heard of this, but it actually makes a lot of sense to me. He's uber-physical, but he's too slow to play outside (and maybe inside) and not an ideal size to play in the middle. As a lead-blocking fulback, as physical as he is, that could be an ideal spot for him.

Oops, I meant carries. Our H-Back/Fullback is essentially a TE/FB hybrid. Henry is a decent WR, anyone we play at that position will have to have some versatility.

Yeah, it could make sense. I actually am not opposed to the idea, I just think he's jumping to conclusions a bit. The offensive special teams scout team player includes special teams (where Matilus is at his best). So the mere fact that he won this award isn't conclusive that he has switched to offense. I guess he heard that he was practicing at FB, but that doesn't mean much yet. Was it for the scout team? Lastly, it'd be surprising if Matilus jumped Mezzenga and Hartmann (much less all of the potential TEs with Wozniak coming off a RS next season). Plsek could make a ton of sense here, maybe Duke.

Another athletic DB would be great. Jones seems to fit the bill. Nice offer list.

Has anyone actually confirmed that Matilus has indeed moved to FB?

No. Seems like a lot of assuming going on. If the offensive scout team award includes special teams, odds are that's how Jephte won it.

The problem with that is he was involved on a lot of special teams and I have a hard time believing he was on the scout special teams as well (tough to be in 2 places at once). Unless it includes special teams starters but I would have thought that would have it's own award.

Reel him in coach Miller.

Poock can play for us I like how he sheds tackles. Him and Phillip Nelson can have a "mane" off to see if they can outgrow
Rallis old Lions Mane. Poock is my kind of linebaker. Bring him in coach Miller, and go Gophers.

It kind of confused me that we were going after a JuCo DE for a couple reasons. First, this is a smallish class. Second, we have quite a bit of depth at DE (Cockran, Amafuela, Perry, Keith (also Salzwedal and maybe Ekpe (he might grow into a DT)). However, this would balance the DE position. Amafuela and Perry will be SRs. Cockran and Keith will be JRs. Ekpe will be a SO and Salzwedal will be a FR. So it could make sense to have another upperclassmen replacement for the seniors on the depth chart. However, after I started going through the classes and the depth at DE, I decided to watch his highlights, and. . . I should've just kept it simple. This kid's tape is really impressive. He is a playmaker.

Yep, it's hard to tell. It seems like everyone's just guessing. Message boards are all about unfounded speculation.

However, another thing to consider is that Matilus is always working with coverage teams. I doubt he's on punt return, KO return or field goal. So, he could certainly work scout in coverage and FG block.

Demetrius hill is good, he has a grade of 77 on ESPN and since he is a juco guy instead of a HS recruit he will be able to contribute right away, I wouldn't be shocked if ends up starting over amaefula, in 2 years our DEs could possibly be the best unit of the team with Cockran, Keith, Hill and Jashon, big if obviously but fun to contemplate that situation

Outside of Cockran, none of those guys have really stood out. Amafuela has been a two-year starter and is rarely in the backfield. I'm big on Keith, but he's a bit smallish. There were a lot of games last year Perry didn't even play.

Go Gophers!!

The Gophers have offered (dependent on an incoming ACT score) and set an official with another tall, fast, under-the-radar type WR named Isaiah Gentry from Ohio. He's currently committed to Kent State. I think Holland's highlights are slightly more impressive but I really like how Gentry catches the ball with his hands. His visit is Jan. 24th.

He's big and very fast. I sometimes wonder when a kid is listed with a 4.4 time, but he seems to have legit down the field speed. The thing that stuck out most to me was his ability to adjust to the ball when it's in the air.

FWIW, Rivals has him at 4.69.

His QB throws a pretty decent ball too. Good looking high school highlights.

Yeah, I actually like Amafuela and Keith, but I hear you. I guess my main point was that teams usually recruit JuCo when they have a big need (depth and no one in the pipeline), we don't appear to be in that situation.

Looks good to me. We need speed like that. Physically similar to Randy Moss as far as height and weight.
