How bad could Buggs be? ... 2/25/14 Update: Not bad at all!

I think one thing that hasn't been brought up yet is that Pitino clearly sees Buggs as a SF not a PF. I do think going forward Buggs will see most (of whatever playing time that he gets) of his minutes at the 3 not the 4.

Buggs will not be on this team next year. We are recruiting 3's and 4's this spring like there won't be any in '15. Unless he converts to pg or 3 pt specialist, there is no place for him.

At the 3 for next season, we have McNeil, Buggs, a Piper type and Carlos Morris. I don't think we will see all four next season.

Mcneil is a combo guard. Not a 3 in any way, shape, or form. He is a defensive specialist and an additional ball handler. Decent 3 pt shooter

I am so glad that the message board police are out here telling us what we can and can't speculate on. It's a fu_cking message board, it is all SPECULATION. Between the made up "ALL YOU GUYS ARE SAYING ..." when I didn't read a single post that said anything of the sort. And of course we the "YOU CAN'T DISCUSS BLAH BLAH BECAUSE YOU AREN'T A PITINO AND YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT HE KNOWS" dickheads telling us our opinions as fans on a fan board aren't valid. SMH.

The moderators on this board suck just slightly more than the posters...bad combination. GFY and Have a nice day.

Interesting speculation at this point. As of this point we have two open scholys left for next year, that would be a total of five. We also have five open for 2015. That's 10 in two years. Makes for some lopsided class numbers unless we sign more JC's.

I believe McNeil is the only frosh and King the only soph at this point.

We will not sign more than four freshmen. Look for at least one immediate qualifier to come to the surface before this is said and done

Certainly possible. Unless he puts some bulk on by the time he is a senior (if he is here by then) or can be physical I would agree. The only time he might play the 4 is if it gives us a favorable matchup against an unathletic, short or slow 4 or something. It kind of is who he is. He is the type of player to stretch the defense out. Not so much a post up in the paint player.

A combo guard is another way of saying they have no idea. Coach P. said yesterday, McNeil can guard the 1, 2, or 3. Both Morris and McNeil are below average 3 point shooters. I'd give the edge to Morris based on form.

EDIT: I have not been to Florida to see Morris play.

I will go on record right now that Mcneil will NOT play the 3 next year. He will be a backup guard. Morris, one of the freshmen recruits, and an immediate qualifier will man the 3 next year

Kind of like when you jumped on me for stating the coach disagrees with you? Why are you so grumpy? Are you one of those law enforcement types that wears shirts that are two sizes too small for you? My goodness.

Sorry, but how is that clear? He's 6'9", long and athletic which we need at PF for the press. He can also shoot and put the ball on the floor, which Pitino says he wants from a PF. Seems to me that he's a much better fit at the 4 in our system and just needs to get stronger and more experienced.

We are getting off topic, but I don't think Pitino wants to play McNeil at the 3. He likes big lanky wings and McNeil is 6'3, at best. He is a prototypical combo (not tweener) guard that will be the first guard off the bench.

Bingo!

Buggs also warms up with the post players. Would be an interesting coaching strategy to have a freshman learn to play PF while not seeing floor time when the overall plan is to play him at the 3.

Yep. One of the biggest problems we currently have is that we just can't create enough perimeter pressure with the size we have and speed we have. Teams are shooting right over the top of us with comfort and passing over our guys is easy as well. As far as Buggs- he could play the 4 or the 3 in the future depending on how he develops. It's pretty obvious why he practices with the bigs this year - PF is where we sorely need athleticism so it's probably based on the hope that he would have the lights go on sooner rather than later.

That reminds me of when people were comparing McNeil to other Gopher players...

Kevin Durant.

I actually said that he reminded me of him when he had that lay in 2nd half. he has certainly shot the 3 well both in the prep title game and tonight.

he has to do a lot more and consistently to show he is a Big 10 player. but it was a heck of a night. I hope to see him get more time and continue to show this type of ability.

go gophers!

Good for Charles! He's a talented kid, when he learns the game he'll be a good player.

I'm actually quite impressed with Pitino that he didn't force him back in there in the 2nd half. Almost impossible for Buggs to live up to his first half. Bank that performance as a confidence builder and do exactly what that phrase means, build on it. Buggs is going to get scouted, but to be honest, he didn't show much more than an outside shot tonight. He was operating against a zone a lot of the time and some heavy pressure, he seemed to have a quick first step especially against White on the outside a couple times he created space with ease to move the ball.

Defensively I didn't see much for concern or confidence. And as far as the complaints about him looking lost, he certainly does. I definitely saw the leaders telling him where to go on defense, and helping him find his man. I think he will continue to see spells to see if he can cause a difference and a quick leash.
I'm very anxious to see what Pitino does with him, how much of his "maturity" issues resurface to hold him back.

I liked his effort on the glass, getting after loose balls and disrupting passing lanes. We are a completely different team with him on the floor, a lot longer, and more athletic.

Yep, there's just nobody else on the roster like him. Austin Hollins is the closest guy as far as length. Buggs is raw and skinny, but it's worth it to play him more considering our other options at PF. He'll have growing pains the next few games but he also provides things that King and Oto can't.
