Bo Ryan getting blasted for post-game complaining about refs

Hayes also blamed the refs:

Sophomore forward Nigel Hayes was asked why the game slipped away from UW, which built a 48-39 lead 6 minutes 36 seconds into the second half.

"One team shot more free throws than the other team," he said.

Hayes was asked if he was being diplomatic.

"I'm trying to be politically correct," he said. "You never know when you'll have another ref...you don't want to say anything that will upset someone.

"And we take pride in ourselves. We don't want to blame another factor. But it is evident to see one team shot more free throws."

Go Gophers!!

I have thoroughly enjoyed the Bo backlash over the last 12 hours. Just don't think this quote is deserving of it. Plenty of other ones from last night. We can agree to disagree.

You're spot on. Bo's quote on the one and done does not exist. He was talking about how he likes to build from within and he was specifically talking about graduate players when referring to the "rent a player"

I wonder why those bashing Bo for his comments about the refs at the end of the game aren't bashing Coach K for his comments about the refs at halftime?

Are you serious? Did you actually hear Coach K's comments? I'm paraphrasing, but it went something like this: "They don't foul. We've only gotten them to commit 2 fouls this whole half. We need to do a better job of forcing them to foul us."

That's the way you handle it. I can't stand Coach K, but he's got more class in his pinky toe, than Bo has in his whole body.

That is just unreal. This from a player that is on a team that shoots more free throws than it's opponent in probably 90% of the games. What a sad attitude to go down with for a great team. They are certainly following their leader on this one.

You know, its one thing for the fan base to rant about the refs - I enjoy doing that sometimes. But even so I think we keep each other honest here and we usually conclude that a few bad calls were not the reason why the game was lost. I didn't notice a slant to the game, and I certainly didn't think the outcome was influenced by the officiating - not like the missed shot clock violation the other night.

This should be very embarrassing to them, this kind of whining. I'd be horrified if our coach did this. No analysis needed. Just ungracious. And the fact that no one here is surprised speaks volumes.

Yes Nigel, you were called for 2 whole fouls more than your opponent. The horror! Definitely the only reason you lost.

The reason the Badgers lost this game was because they played poorly in key spots. They were up by nine with Dukes two best players sitting on the bench in foul trouble and they wouldn't throw it to their big guys inside who had huge advantages. They started launching three point shots that were simply not going in. Hayes played well and Frank the Tank had a decent game but the rest of the team didn't play very well. The guards in the first half were terrible. Stop blaming everyone but those who really deserve it and that is the players and the coach who didn't get the job done. I find it funny that a coach whose team had so few fouls called on them all season would be complaining now in a game in which the opponents top two players (for most of the tournament) were sitting on the bench for large chunks of the game in foul trouble. Bo Ryan now you know what all the other teams in the Big Ten were thinking but not saying playing your team. The Badgers averaging under ten fouls per game.

While I somewhat agree with most posters here, I do think that Whisky got screwed. Not saying that they deserved to win, they played horrendously at times. One foul call (non-call) completely changed the complexion of the game; Winslow clearly charged Dukan late in the 2nd half, and it was called a blocking foul. It would have been four fouls on Winslow, and it would have given the ball back to WI up four. Instead Winslow hit both FT's and was able to continue his reckless play. Winslow one or two possessions later clearly charged again (no call) on a pass and Duke scored again. Those non-calls completely changed the game in my opinion. Not to mention the two out of bounds plays that weren't called. I'm just saying this; if I were coaching my team in the national championship game, I would absolutely have said more or less what Bo Ryan said. Again, I'm not saying that they didn't get some calls, and I'm not saying that they even deserved to win, but that was some awful officiating, and Winslow would have played differently or not at all if those calls had gone against him. It's too bad it wasn't a better game, I was hoping for better play out of both sides, good job to Tyus though, wow...

No he wasn't. He was referring to one and done's like Jones and Okafor. He quickly realized he shouldn't have said it so he tried to cover his ass and mentioned the 5th year thing. He just got done playing two programs who have a handful of one and done players. That is clearly what he was referring to.

That's well said. My overwhelming feeling about this isn't hate or disgust for Bo and his players but embarrassment for them. They must not know how bad this makes them, their program and their institution look.

Maybe this run to the title game and subsequent whining did more to hurt badger basketball than help badger basketball. Wouldn't that be delicious?

When Wisconsin shoots more free throws, it is because they are aggressive and take the ball to the hoop.

When opponents of Wisconsin shoot more free throws, it is because the refs conspired against them.

Anyone want to do call law enforcement and have them do a welfare check on Ruppert, who might be not eating or drinking any water as he salivates over Buckyville's meltdown?

Ok, I found the video and listened to it again. I can see where you think he is referring to the one and done... I'll have to revise my stance a bit after hearing it a second time.

The question he was asked was

Is it going to be hard to say goodbye to this class of seniors?

He was definitely talking about his guys. Whether its a freshman one and done or a rent a player 5th year senior, the comment was how he likes watching his guys grow with the team. I don't think he was taking a shot, it's taken out of context IMO. I can see how we all want it to be this "look at me, I'm better than everyone moment" but the question he was answering about was how he grew with these guys that were leaving his program.

While I hate Bo Ryan as much as the next guy. He's in an emotional situation there reflecting on losing his first national player of the year to graduation and a bunch of other guys who he has gone to back to back final fours with. They aren't one year players so he has a relationship with him.

Edit: I keep watching it, and he is a ******nozzle. I don't know if I believe what I wrote above, although I do think that's how he STARTED answering the question, and then got caught up...

Hopefully officals will finally see Bo for what he is and in the future he no longer will get the benefit of the doubt. The way Bo and his players handled the defeat shows their true character. They are worse than I thought they were. It's easy to look like the model program when things are going good. Adversity shows them to be frauds .

Have to admit the obvious irony of a team that benefits from referee calls more than any other in the Big 10 is suddenly pissed off about the officiating. It's actually quite hilarious. Pathetic, but hilarious.

Bo Ryan is a loser. Plus, this is a fake tweet cuz I figger'd nobody would notice since people were posting random tweets.

The ball is tipped
Your team won't flinch
Your team is white as snow
And you look like the Grinch
And now there's tears
We all know
That you're an asshole
And now it shows...
In one whining moment, you showed who you are
One whining moment, forever a doosh

i'm worried about dr. don. he posted more "go badgers" posts than anyone the last few days. he must be taking this loss hard.

You are definitely looking through red colored glasses. UW got just as many non-calls. I don't understand how a player can take a step backwards towards the basket with another 2-3 steps in a pivot move and not be called for traveling. A lot of clutching and grabbing going on the whole game.

The refs did not screw sconny!

I am very embarrassed by all the crying about the officiating. When you lose you praise the other team.

badger doc, bo, nigel, bronson and thousands of fans could learn a lot from you.

It's tough going in front of the press after defeat, but the press didn't ask any questions that were out of line, were very gracious and understanding of what they were going through and they were treated badly by Bo and the two players. The tweet by Koenig was over the top. Maybe an apology tour is in order.

Bo is a decent coach, reasonably gracious in victory and a complete @ss in defeat. Has been since I can remember. Now the nation knows. Someone said yesterday that the normal Badger fans knew this was their shot and it would not likely repeat itself. Does this mean Bo decides to hang it up?

Wrong, Go4. I was pulling for the Badgers. After watching and reading about Bo's ill-advised post game, I am glad the Badgers lost. Hindsight is great. :)

You've been a gopher fan long enough to know that's how the badgers would act!

Decent coach? The guy is elite and is on the short list for best in the country.
