All Things Tubby Smith Thread UPDATED 5/27: Vince Taylor joins Tubby at TTech

Remember how we used to feel morally superior to Kentucky fans after hiring their coach who was unjustly pressured out after a 2nd round tournament exit? Where are our 7 McDonald's All-Americans for stooping to this level?

First of all I have rooted for Tubby and the gophers since he became coach there. My best friend is from Minn. so I have always rooted for my friends up north in all sports when not against my favorite teams. That being said it is amazing to read the disenchantment with Tubby from the perspective of the local fans and exactly how much the resemble the same things written about coach Smith when he left Ky. I will always wish him the best where ever he goes because he is a tremendous person and class guy. That being said, as many on this sight have pointed out, he is not a great recruiter and to those who may not know it although he was not forced out at Ky he was told if he did not replace his assistants he would be. He refused and that led to his searching for a different job. His loyalty to his ineffective assistant coaches has cost him more than once it seems. Anyway good luck to Tubby and I sincerely hope Minnesota makes a great hire. Instead of going after a big name IMO they should look for a hungry young assistant who will work his tail off and recruit relentlessly. Make it exciting in the Barn again. Best of Luck Gophers !!!

That pretty much sums it up.

Yeah, his staff needed some fresh blood, it was obvious. I understand there's a comfort there, but it just felt like we were stuck unless something on that staff changed. If he was unwilling to do that, then yeah, I would have leaned on the side of letting him go. I would have liked to have seen him return with a couple fresh faces, maybe someone to invigorate the half court offense, get a little life into recruiting. Just sad how it's ended for him at both jobs. Sounds like at the very least, his son's not gonna be following him to Tech, so that's a start for him if that's the case.

@apkrawczynski: Tubby Smith's contract calls for him to make $1.8 million per year over the next 6 years.

Go Gophers!!

For anyone who wants to see it live at 2:00 today. Here is the link

Tubby, I wish you well. It was time for him to move on but he was a class individual and I hope he has success at Texas Tech.

Thanks for posting the link. It was interesting. He seemed to be shocked still from being fired. He kept saying Minnesota. It will take time for both parties to get back to being normal. People in here went crazy last week. I have a feeling Tubby will recover sooner than the U.

Go Gopehrs and Tubby

It's all so predictable. Can see where this one will go.

Texas Tech President in introductory comments re: Tubby Smith: "More than just winning, he's always done it THE RIGHT WAY".

Tubby's comments today included, "you're going to see a team that likes to get up & down the court because my teams have done that in the past"....

He's taking a bit of a salary hit, but with the big buyout he'll come out more than fine (off the court).

Where did you get you're APR numbers?

Very true but you could see that he has learned a bit from here. He said that he hoped to have a 3-point shooter in that team. They'll do well for sure.

Tweet from former Gopher Lawrence Mckenzie

@Mac_Irv: Tubby still making excuses about his tenure here in Minnesota!!?? SMFH!!

He has a 3 point shooter here that needs to play point guard because Tubby didn't recruit a true point, so he still doesn't get it!

Kaler on Tubby, per the MN Daily:

The University fired Tubby Smith last Monday. What was your initial reaction?

First, to thank him for what he’s done for the program. He’s certainly made important contributions, but I also think that the program was a little bit stuck and not as competitive in the Big Ten as our fan base would like to see. I wish him luck in what comes next for him.

Who was involved in the decision to fire Tubby Smith?

The athletic director makes the decisions on coaches, but [athletics director Norwood Teague] certainly consulted with me before making the final decision.

How does the University justify paying more than $3 million to fire a coach?

Well, the buyouts in big-time college athletics are unfortunately part of the business. I think it’s a challenge for institutions to pay these, but unfortunately they’re a fact of life.

The University’s athletics department recently shared nine contract extensions it gave to coaches privately last summer. What was your role in these extensions?

I had approved all of those extensions. Again, they were recommended by the athletic department, and I OK’d them. And again, the report was that these were done privately, and what happened was that the transition of leadership in the athletics department fell between the cracks and weren’t publicized as they normally are done, but there was no intention to hide them. It’s kind of silly to think that you could hide a coach extension contract because a coach shows up to coach. People will notice.

What are your thoughts that the athletics department must pay him more than $3 million when the department already has to borrow from the University general fund to balance its budget?

The University’s athletic budget is about $80 million. It receives about $25 million a year from the Big Ten. … It receives substantial revenue from ticket sales and other medium. So the athletics budget is able to support expenditures for athletics. If there’s a cash flow issue, they can borrow money from central funds, but it’s a loan that is paid back.

Took a look at Tubby's decrease in pay at Texas Tech: Guns Up, Cash Down.

Would be making 40% more guaranteed in 2013-14 if still at Minnesota.. even more of a difference once incentives are added in. With the buyout Tubby should be more than fine, but pretty steep drop in pay. In part, I think it shows how lovely his deal at Minnesota was.

No income tax in texas. That should help the difference between the two salaries.

Not much. Let's pretend you file as a married couple and have $1.6 million of income... $0 in Texas. In MN.. $124k.

Excluding federal and other tax implications, we're talking the $1.6 million "being like" about $1.725 in Minnesota... vs $2.25.. a diff of $525k instead of $650k.

Saw that and it pissed me off. If you're going to throw out an eye-popping stat like that, then get the facts straight.

His legend continues to grow. Sort of like "Save Ferris"

Teague called him to ask him for ideas on “someone that is maybe not on the radar, someone who was young and hungry.”

We're allowed now to hire people on the basis of their age?

I've noticed that, imagine how good things would have been had Tubby been as good as the national media is telling people he is. . .

For one thing, he'd have a better gig than Texas Tech.

The national media is correct....he's a good coach. He will succeed at Texas Tech. Sounds like some solid schools want HIS former recruits Foster and Ellis. Izzo is after Ellis now!

I don't think anyone is saying that Tubby is NOT a good coach. He is a good coach, if you like a coach, that is way behind the times in terms of practice, ability to change in-game strategies, a relentless recruiter with top notch assistants hell bent on recruiting till their last breath, relates well to today's players and a coach that actually listens to his assistants, which Tubby was never fond of doing.
