Nice work on the analysis. I'm not a Tubby basher either. Loved him during his first 4-5 years here and was one of the people who suggested putting Tubby talk on hold until after the season. He's a great man, but these types of statistics is exactly why I don't understand the outrage with national media (and Parski). I don't want to ask you to go through all that time again, but I'd be curious to see what these numbers would look like over the 6 years prior to Tubby's tenure for comparison.

Had the same thought about the National stance. Tubby's record at Minnesota was bad to mediocre, on top of that he just seemed flummoxed on how to make things better. Even if they understood that the National Media looked at what he did at Tulsa, Georgia and at Kentucky, with and without Pitino's players and they think it's Minnesota's problem not Tubby's.

Take a look at Monson's record here and then Clem's "non vacated" years. That will take you back to 1986. If you read those it's easy to understand when they say "you just can't win up there"

I hate the combining of threads. I find it much easier to manage a number of threads than these huge ones. I was away Friday and Saturday and the huge threads make it impossible to catch up.

Barn Boy's analysis was well done, by the way.

Oh man, I HATE it when they combine threads. And loved Barn Boy's analysis!!

No. They all saw the Clemson game on National TV in ACC Challenge and knew what would and needed to happen. The mid season axe may have surprised them, though.

Historical comparison is always slippery, but there can be no argument that the conference is far stronger now than it was in Monson's time, so even a remote suggestion that we were "better" when Dan was in charge is an overstatement. I provide as my evidence the aformentioned Clemson game, the absolute lowest on court Gopher experience in my life.

I think it is a dirty shame that BarnBoy's thread got dumped into this 7 page monster. He went through all that work, I think that deserves a thread of its own. I get it there are times when things get out of hand with similar topics but there has to be some common sense applied to combining the threads. Really, it is getting to the point where there only has to be 4 or 5 threads, each dozen's of pages long. Sheesh. I love Gopherhole but the thread combining gets to me at times. BarnBoy's research deserved its own conversation. A lot of people, like me, get tired of threads and trying to follow them once they reach 3 or 4 pages. There are some really thoughtful comments that are lost to a lot of eyes when this is done.

Plus all the posts are marked with the powder blue box. First time I've had unread posts by Station19.

Yep, great work Barnboy.

This stuff shows that calling Tubby mediocore was merely being nice.

Because Tubby had a bad last year we can just ignore injuries right?

Let's ignore injuries, transfers, bad spring signings, inability to make in-game adjustments, mentally checking out, regularly losing the team, throwing specific players under the bus, annual flirtation with open coaching positions and refusal to upgrade assistants to the list as well. With all of those omissions, Tubby was great!

Yup exactly what I was saying thanks so much jamalo!

Great post BarnBoy.

I was with Tubby all the way to the end of this year. When it ended as horribly as it did, it seemed clear it was time to change direction.

Contrary to what Parski says, I can't imagine regretting Tubby leaving. We had reached our ceiling with him, and it was still the bottom half of the conference.

Our new guy may or may not get us above that level, but at least there is a chance. That is worth something in itself.

Great analysis Barnboy. I wouldn't be surprised if Tubby has great success at TT. The man one a national championship, so there must be a winner inside somewhere. Winners don't like failing and don't like being fired, this may be just what he needed to reignite his fire.

He may bring in an assistant to run the day to day with the team, that may be the ignition.

A typical GH post. You have no idea what you are talking about. You just read something from their website. Didn't you?

So, you're suggesting Frazier will go play for Tubby at TT and Tubby will not keep Walker on staff. Ok. Let's see if that happens.

guarantee you 110% that I won't. Not a big fan of a coach who has mentally checked out and is in essence collecting a retirement annuity

I guarantee you 120% you will.

Best of luck to Tubby. Lots of good players in Texas.

Now that Tubby is gone, I hope all of the Kentucky posters follow him to TT. I would write it has been a pleasure having you here, but that would be a lie.

@sethdavishoops: I like Tubby Smith but the fact that Texas Tech would turn to him when there are so many qualified, hungry assts. out there is perplexing.

Go Gophers!!

But...Minnesota was supposed to keep him and it is terrible that Minnesota let him go. Such crap the national media is.

A hungry assistant is a crap shoot and Texas Tech has had one too many rounds of crap shoots. Can't blame them for wanting Tubby. Wasn't Monson a supposed hungry assistant?

@JasonKingESPN
Tx Tech has summoned its men's basketball players to a 10:30 (CT) p.m. meeting 2night, presumably to introduce them to new coach Tubby Smith

They've also had an awful lot of retreads, both in football and in basketball.

per Andy Katz:

Tubby Smith's decision to go to Texas Tech should go down as one of the most surprising recent moves. I was convinced Smith would either take some time off after he was fired at Minnesota or maybe go back to the mid-Atlantic area to coach -- even if it were at a lower level. Smith can coach at any spot. But I wasn't sure he would want to take on another rebuild. Texas Tech will always have a hard climb in men's basketball in the Big 12. The Red Raiders have facilities but drawing has been an issue and the program hasn't resonated as much within the state. Texas Tech hasn't shied away from brand names with Bob Knight and now Smith. Smith has had to face plenty of challenges in his career. Clearly, he isn't ducking another chance at a point when he could have sought a softer landing. He'll need to ensure he's got a solid staff that is as energized for this tall task as much as he must be to take on getting the Red Raiders out the bottom of the Big 12.

Go Gophers!!

Who's Tubby's agent? That guy is good. I'm assuming it has to be for 1.5 or so. (Side note, I didn't realize Knight was there for so long.)

130% he won't because he hates Tubby.

Nah, I don't hate Tubby. I just dislike the fact that he thought he could rest on his laurels and coast here for the past couple of years. Need a coach who has a plan and is willing to put in the effort to succeed here.

Jeff Goodman: Tubby is a good man, but not the right fit at Texas Tech

Texas Tech is a grinder job, the most difficult in the entire Big 12. If you've ever been to Lubbock (which I have), it's brutal to get kids to come there, so you'd better outwork everyone else. Smith, again, is a very good basketball coach. He's proven that at Tulsa, Georgia and even early on in his tenure at Kentucky. But what Smith is not is a grinder. Maybe that was the case back in the day when he was in Athens in the mid 1990s, but that was nearly two decades ago -- and Smith had access to loads of high-level players within a couple hours of the Georgia campus. There's virtually no one within a four-hour drive of Lubbock.

Smith is 61 now. His staff has been criticized within coaching circles, and he's coming off a stint at Minnesota in which he won a single NCAA tourney contest in six seasons and only went to the big dance half of his tenure with the Gophers.

He had difficulty recruiting high-level talent to Kentucky. Yes, I know he got some players to Minnesota, but he didn't keep a bunch of them (i.e. Devoe Joseph, Royce White) and look at where the Gophers are now after losing Trevor Mbakwe and Rodney Williams. It's Andre Hollins and not much else. This program is headed in the wrong direction and that's why athletic director Norwood Teague opted to make a move now. So it wouldn't turn into a major rebuilding effort.

Again, he's a wonderful man. But there's a reason why he was fired at Minnesota. The Gophers were mediocre. They never finished with a winning mark in any of his six seasons in the Big Ten. Smith left with a 46-62 record in the league, including a 20-34 mark in his final three seasons in the Big Ten.

pretty much sums it up, much to the chagrin of the handful of remaining apologists

Goodman is a Teague puppet and it's getting really weird.

Kentucky Perspective

First of all I have rooted for Tubby and the gophers since he became coach there. My best friend is from Minn. so I have always rooted for my friends up north in all sports when not against my favorite teams. That being said it is amazing to read the disenchantment with Tubby from the perspective of the local fans and exactly how much the resemble the same things written about coach Smith when he left Ky. I will always wish him the best where ever he goes because he is a tremendous person and class guy. That being said, as many on this sight have pointed out, he is not a great recruiter and to those who may not know it although he was not forced out at Ky he was told if he did not replace his assistants he would be. He refused and that led to his searching for a different job. His loyalty to his ineffective assistant coaches has cost him more than once it seems. Anyway good luck to Tubby and I sincerely hope Minnesota makes a great hire. Instead of going after a big name IMO they should look for a hungry young assistant who will work his tail off and recruit relentlessly. Make it exciting in the Barn again. Best of Luck Gophers !!!
