If he contributes to a couple of World Series Championships and has the Dodgers in contention the other years, then Ohtani will be worth every penny, IMO.

The Japanese money alone will pay for a big chunk of that contract. Look what Yao Ming did for the Houston Rockets organization (and the NBA) by tapping into the Chinese market.

Yep. He’s going to create a massive amount of revenue for the Dodgers. I don’t see the problem with the guy that is the reason for the revenue to get a lot of the money instead of the owners.

the Ohtani deal just points out the gap between the big-spending, big-revenue teams and everyone else.

plus, with multiple teams dealing with the loss or potential loss of RSN revenue, the gap between the haves and the have-nots is getting wider this off-season.

I've seen writers saying that the uncertainty over RSN revenue is one of the reasons why the trade market has been so slow. there are teams that might want to make deals, but they need to cut some payroll at the same time.

It can buy you s$x though if not love. It just makes it tougher for the casual fan to like baseball cause this type of thing can not happen in other sports. In every other major sport a free agent could sign with any team possibly as they have a cap. The top free agents are basically choosing between like 4-5 teams. Heck even the Padres are unloading salary. I expect Texas to potentially do the same thing in two years.

It's not really ticket sales/concessions. The Dodgers already draw huge crowds. It's how much is a TV deal/merchandise in Japan worth? If they get $25-30 million from that, it's suddenly a pretty good deal.

before anyone asks - it is perfectly legal under baseball rules. there are no restrictions on the amount of money in a contract that can be deferred.

you can argue that a dollar today is worth more than that same dollar 10 years from now due to inflation - but even with a little bite from inflation, it's still a shite-load of money.

Listening to Jeff Passan on the Tony Kornheiser pod, MLB controls all the revenue for international broadcasts.

The Dodgers will cash in on Japanese companies with corporate sponsorships.

Yes and no. The Padres had to do it in the middle of the season and still got up on DirecTV/cable within a week or so. Hopefully they are at least hiring the production crews/equipment and doing all the infrastructure part. Putting it on X channel is mostly a signature and pushing a button.
