All Things 2023-2024 Minnesota Twins Off-Season Thread

If he contributes to a couple of World Series Championships and has the Dodgers in contention the other years, then Ohtani will be worth every penny, IMO.

The Japanese money alone will pay for a big chunk of that contract. Look what Yao Ming did for the Houston Rockets organization (and the NBA) by tapping into the Chinese market.

Yep. He’s going to create a massive amount of revenue for the Dodgers. I don’t see the problem with the guy that is the reason for the revenue to get a lot of the money instead of the owners.

the Ohtani deal just points out the gap between the big-spending, big-revenue teams and everyone else.

plus, with multiple teams dealing with the loss or potential loss of RSN revenue, the gap between the haves and the have-nots is getting wider this off-season.

I've seen writers saying that the uncertainty over RSN revenue is one of the reasons why the trade market has been so slow. there are teams that might want to make deals, but they need to cut some payroll at the same time.

It can buy you s$x though if not love. It just makes it tougher for the casual fan to like baseball cause this type of thing can not happen in other sports. In every other major sport a free agent could sign with any team possibly as they have a cap. The top free agents are basically choosing between like 4-5 teams. Heck even the Padres are unloading salary. I expect Texas to potentially do the same thing in two years.

I'm sure some nerd already crunched the numbers, but I wonder what they project he's worth per season in terms of increased ad revenue, ticket sales, concessions, merchandise, etc.

It's not really ticket sales/concessions. The Dodgers already draw huge crowds. It's how much is a TV deal/merchandise in Japan worth? If they get $25-30 million from that, it's suddenly a pretty good deal.

That is some retirement package.

before anyone asks - it is perfectly legal under baseball rules. there are no restrictions on the amount of money in a contract that can be deferred.

you can argue that a dollar today is worth more than that same dollar 10 years from now due to inflation - but even with a little bite from inflation, it's still a shite-load of money.

My understanding is that interest is typically paid on these deals, correct?

if they have a streaming package they could sell in Japan, they could really clean up.

Listening to Jeff Passan on the Tony Kornheiser pod, MLB controls all the revenue for international broadcasts.

The Dodgers will cash in on Japanese companies with corporate sponsorships.

To quote the wise astute Spicoli, "Righteous Bucks!"

Crazy if true.

Mid-December and no word on a new Twins' TV deal.

they had better figure something out pretty soon. the TV deal, good or bad, will help determine the payroll. the payroll will determine what type of moves they can make in the off-season.

the ownership cannot let this slide much further.

whoever winds up with the rights will need time to make agreements with over-the-air, cable TV, satellite operators and/or a streaming package. and then they will need to promote the bleep out of it to let people know where and how they can watch the games.

Yes and no. The Padres had to do it in the middle of the season and still got up on DirecTV/cable within a week or so. Hopefully they are at least hiring the production crews/equipment and doing all the infrastructure part. Putting it on X channel is mostly a signature and pushing a button.

Not for free. They gave up two good players that I didn't want to lose. I mean, I'll still take it though. 😁
I would hope it was not free. The guys act young contender at what used to be the most important position in baseball. That should cost somethingZ

Enough will the Dodger 🐶 - they’ll under perform again and choke the 🐓 again, it’s who they be.

Gleeman prediction via The Athletic -

Along those lines, I have three core predictions about the Twins’ offseason:

1. Their most impactful move(s) will come via trade, not free agency.

2. They will trade some or all of Jorge Polanco, Max Kepler, Christian Vázquez and Kyle Farmer.

3. They will acquire a playoff-caliber starting pitcher.

Wow!

Now I'm intrigued.

Twins are also the favorites for the Central at this juncture-

FanGraphs’ initial projections, based on fluid depth-chart estimates, have the Twins at 90 wins, followed by the Guardians (85), Tigers(81), Royals (78) and White Sox (70). Those same projections have the Twins as the fifth-best team in the AL, behind the Astros (95), Yankees (95), Rays (94) and Blue Jays (91). They won 87 games and had the AL’s seventh-best record last season.

BetMGM has the Twins at minus-125 to win the division, which means you’d have to bet $125 to win $100, making them obvious favorites. By comparison, the same $100 bet on the Guardians (+300) or Tigers (+325) would win $300 and $325, respectively. And the Royals (+2000) and White Sox (+4000) are big long shots, paying 20-to-1 and 40-to-1, respectively.

To me the Tigers are the best value bet. I'm not saying they are the favorites, though.

Tigers and Royals are both making moves while the Twins do absolutely nothing.

Eh, it's still early. It isn't about who makes the moves first, it's about how makes the better moves. They're working on some trades.
