Weakling Wednesday Dropouts Updates

Iowa could be in for a big time free fall to end the year. Lost 3 in a row and five of their final 8 are on the road. They are really banged up and the wheels seem to have come off their season.
They seem like a solid bet for one of the bottom 3 slots.

Northwestern seems like another likely to fall short although they are putting up a solid fight most nights even though they have lost 5 of their last 6 games.

Penn State pretty much feels like a lock for bottom 3. They have dropped 6 straight and are really struggling.

So as long as we play decent down the stretch we should be able to finish ahead of all 3 of those teams. Back to back home games against Penn State and Northwestern in late February, have to win both of those games, and if we do that will probably be enough to avoid the bottom 3.
This program is notorious for laying eggs. Washington anyone? I take nothing that should be for granted. While Selection is fretting the Cats, I am fretting Penn State. They have enough athletes to embarrass us at home.

Yippee-skipee, not finish in the bottom three. Now that’s something to be proud of. Please, I want my 3 years of graduate school tuition refunded.
When the going gets tough...Quit.

Relative to making it to Weakling Wednesday, my greatest fear already is the Gophers will be in decent-to-good shape heading into the Northwestern game, but then lay a giant turd at home vs. the injury-ravaged Wildcats. That’s a game under no circumstances would a loss be acceptable.
The Gophs have a long, sad history of losing must-win games to bad Northwestern squads. Let’s hope this isn’t a repeat.

B1G weekend ahead. Should have a little more separation in the bottom third after Sunday.

USC perhaps is Gophers' best chance to get a win other than home games vs. Penn State (Feb. 22) and Northwestern (Feb. 25). Saturday's Washington/Penn State loser will be in a world of hurt.

Yeah, loser of Washington @ Penn State would seem like a near lock for one of the bottom 3 spots.

A win over USC would go a long way towards getting us above that cutoff line for good. Solid chance that Northwestern and Iowa don't win very many more down the stretch with all their injuries.

I wouldn’t count out Iowa yet. They’ll always score points.

NW is the one I can’t see stringing enough W’s to make it.

Cats and Hawks still play each other so one of them gets a win.

A quick glance at the schedules of those in range of the bottom three suggests Rutgers has the toughest schedule remaining. I could easily see them having us o the last day of the season needing the W to get in. Hopefully an L doesn’t keep us out.

Iowa is definitely capable of scoring but losing Freeman for the rest of the year was a massive blow to them because they can't replicate his size and skill.

I must say that Iowa was impressive in the second half at Rutgers in coming back to secure their first road win. They looked like a very likely loser at the end of the first half but looked like a different team in the second. Even some of their lesser players contributed significantly to the victory.

Rutgers' performance in the second half also gave me some confidence that we could win there (assuming we don't fall apart over the rest of the season). I've been wrong about more than a few things this season but it looks like I was right when I said that Rutgers' preseason ratings were too generous because they were counting too much on freshmen. Not every group of freshmen, no matter how talented, will perform like the Fab Five. Their top 2 are sure fire lottery picks so I hope their minds are shifting to just getting done with the season by the time we meet them for the last regular season game.

I missed Iowa beating Rutgers, speaks to how little separation there is between the teams in the bottom part of the standings.

Missing the NCAA tournament with 2 elite one and done players would be a pretty tough pill to swallow for Rutgers since those guys are almost certainly gone after this season. Yeah, maybe they will be fully checked out by the time we play at the end of the season, they might be if they know for sure they can't get to the NCAA tournament at that point.

I always try to be a little zen when something happens that seems like it should derail a season like Freeman going down. You just gotta say "we'll see". They played PU & UW close without him and beat RU on the road (also missing Thelwell in that one). It's not like the players behind Freeman are any good, but apparently they make the team better at rebounding and defense than they were.

The decimation at Northwestern was worse, IMO, yet if you watch them, their ragtag band of misfit toys still manages to make it interesting.

Penn State is pretty much locked in after losing to Washington. Other two spots are still up for grabs though. Absolutely have to win our head to head games with Northwestern and Penn State which will hopefully keep us out of the bottom 3 mix.

I assumed jorts were invented by Bleacher Bums at Wrigley Field in the mid70s.

That's where I saw first saw them.
You're referring to the "jikini", inspired by Catherine Bach. Jorts covered your marbles and allowed you to carry your car keys.
