Weakling Wednesday Dropouts Updates

Perhaps I jumped the gun on burying Northwestern.

Wildcats opening up a can of whoop a*s on the Buckeyes in Columbus. Up 23 in the second half. Chris Collins’ boys showing a lot of fight.

Combined with Penn State's strong performance against Nebraska yesterday, it looks like our next two opponents are not going to go down easily. Penn State looked a lot better with their center playing yesterday and he had a strong game. As far as Northwestern, you have to hand it to Collins for getting something out of these players who barely played two weeks ago, especially Windham.

And PSU did last night. The odds of the Gophers sweeping them are being over-stated. Less than 50/50 to both of them for sure.
The fact that the Gophers at least try to play defense gives them a leg up on Penn State and NW recent opponents. Lots of evidence they have not been taken seriously by their opponents.

There is very little separation between the teams in the bottom half of the standings. Going to be interesting to see how it all shakes out.

While moving up the standings, it still feels like the bottom gets too close for comfort. I thought the LA sweep provided some margin for error, but now I’m not so sure.
Oh yee, of little faith!

I still think the magic number is probably 7 but could creep up to 8 wins to for sure avoid missing the BTT. If we take care of business in these next two home games against Northwestern and Penn State we should be in the clear.

Lose to either of them though and it certainly makes things more dicey.

At the risk of jinxing this into oblivion, the Gophers have a realistic shot to get all the way up to 8th place by the end of Tuesday:

Gophers win Saturday and Tuesday (8-9)
Oregon loses Saturday @ Wisconsin (8-9)
Nebraska loses Monday vs Michigan (7-10)
Ohio State loses Sunday @ UCLA (7-10)

Very little separation record wise from 7th - 13th place in the conference.

14th - 18th are not all that far behind the middle group

Top 6 have separated a little.

Going to be interesting to see how these final couple weeks shake out.

Almost every conference game with this team that isn't a blow-out loss is tight and unpredictable. That's part of what makes them compelling. The football team, although comparably better, was similar in that respect. 7 of the 10 power conference games they played during the regular season were one-score games.

At this point, I almost wish those two games were on the road. This team is 4-4 in conference road games but only 2-5 in conference home games. Somebody on Off Tackle Empire quipped after the LA sweep: "Maybe the Gophers just needed warmer weather."

Thanks for letting me know - just keep our heads down and play one opponent at a time.

All these close games are great, as when you start winning them, the confidence keeps growing and building.
Gotta close escrow against Penn State, can't afford a Washington situation where we overlooked them and got a bit cocky.

Some of that is a function of who we have played. MSU, Pur, and Ill are all solid and bad matchups for us.

Then you have the Ohio State debacle where we lost a game we should have won.

Haven't looked at numbers across the conference but it does feel like the home/road splits are not as extreme as they have been in some previous seasons. Feels like road teams are winning way more this season then they have in the past in conference games but could be totally wrong about that.

Agree that some of the home difficulties were due to the strength of the teams played at home. The OSU game still hurts for letting that one get away. Sports Reference lists "four factors" for each game box score. We won three of those four against OSU but lost by a point anyway because we missed 15 free throws. It should be noted that we've had seven games this season with really bad free throw shooting (less than 60%) but we haven't had one of those since the OSU game.

And then there was Washington...ugh.

At this point I view the Ohio State loss and the UCLA win as a wash. Both games were lost by the home teams inability to make a friggin free throw. :)

Lot will change between now and then most likely but would gladly take a rematch with USC in the opening round.

Tuesday against Northwestern pretty much a must win now to avoid missing the BTT. Lose that one and it will get pretty dicey.

Colossal game vs. the Wildcats. Win and it’ll be pretty much impossible to finish as one of the bottom 3 turds. Lose and, well, let’s not go there.

Yeah - 7 has felt like the cut line for a while and that seems to be playing out.

Win over Northwestern and we would have a 2 game lead over both them and Penn State with each team having 3 to play. Barring a huge upset by Washington at Wisconsin tonight we would be up 3 on them with 3 to play so they would have to run the table and we would have to lose all 3 for them to get past us (assume they would get the tiebreaker with the head to head win but suppose that could be complicated if there were other teams in the mix as well).

As you said though.....lose tonight......it gets real dicey really quick.
