Weakling Wednesday Dropouts Updates

Why are we hoping to have one more game before Ben gets fired? In the end either the boys get one more game (two if there's a miracle) or they're done with the season. No fan should stress over such low fruit.
Who’s stressing?

Just trying to add something light & fluffy to this season, while preferring to taste a morsel of success we can feel good about. Is that so bad?

I’d rather “live to play another day (or two)” in the Big Ten tourney than get shut out of it altogether. But to each his own.

Well said. We have no control over the coaching situation so those of us that enjoy watching Gopher basketball and rooting for the team would like to see them win enough to make the Big Ten Tournament and keep the season going as long as possible.

I know that is tough concept for some to deal with.

You strike me as a person who loves cotton candy. It looks good, but once you go to eat it, it vanishes away.

Not this thread🤠

Poor Northwestern lost another starter for the year (Leach). That’s 31 points per game they have to replace on the fly. I watched a little bit of their game last night at Washington - they lost a close one, but man do they battle with whatever they have. Can’t even credit Collins because he’d been ejected in the first half.

Iowa and Northwestern are both dealing with significant injuries that will make it tough for them to win many more games over the remainder of the season. Solid chance they end up in 2 of the 3 spots.

The stretch run to make it to Weakling Wednesday starts now!

Five games tonight, featuring 6 teams (at least) loosely close to the Big Ten Tournament bubble.

Through February 10
15. Minnesota (4-9)

Really good list of Big Ten games tonight. Two marquee games at the top. Hard to believe that Indiana and Oregon have descended to potential conference tournament bubble teams yet here they are. Just goes to show that one shouldn't be too influenced by early season evidence.

There are a bunch o' teams in the mix to end up in the relegation zone - 9 teams currently between 3 and 5 wins for those 3 spots (no idea on the tiebreakers with that many teams). I am guessing Washington might make it out - their game at Iowa coming up a week from Saturday is a biggie.

Yeah, going to be a ton of movement probably as the teams go head to head.

Finally in 15th place without the use of ties! We would move to 14th place after tonight if Iowa loses since we'd have the tie braker. They haven't won a conference road game yet so our chances aren't bad.

Relative to making it to Weakling Wednesday, my greatest fear already is the Gophers will be in decent-to-good shape heading into the Northwestern game, but then lay a giant turd at home vs. the injury-ravaged Wildcats. That’s a game under no circumstances would a loss be acceptable.

I thought you said you weren't "stressing"?

What gives? ;)

I've been a bit worried about that too. That's the most crucial game remaining. Northwestern appears to have more reserve strength than us to compensate for injured starters. Mullins and Clayton have been serviceable since entering the starting lineup and they had a freshman (Windham) come off the bench to score 20 against Oregon last night.

Iowa could be in for a big time free fall to end the year. Lost 3 in a row and five of their final 8 are on the road. They are really banged up and the wheels seem to have come off their season.
They seem like a solid bet for one of the bottom 3 slots.

Northwestern seems like another likely to fall short although they are putting up a solid fight most nights even though they have lost 5 of their last 6 games.

Penn State pretty much feels like a lock for bottom 3. They have dropped 6 straight and are really struggling.

So as long as we play decent down the stretch we should be able to finish ahead of all 3 of those teams. Back to back home games against Penn State and Northwestern in late February, have to win both of those games, and if we do that will probably be enough to avoid the bottom 3.

Yippee-skipee, not finish in the bottom three. Now that’s something to be proud of. Please, I want my 3 years of graduate school tuition refunded.
