As far as the actual penalties, they are severe, but the PSU FB program can survive this. The coaches are going to have to be very smart in recruiting, and they have to avoid injuries. I could see some kids taking advantage of this by walking on in order to say they played D1 FB. The residual impact of the scandal will hurt, but PSU is still a 'name' school in a major conference, and they will still have players who want to play there.
I still question the NCAA's decision to jump in and administer penalties without conducting its own investigation, or waiting to see what happened in the court cases against Spanier & Curley.
My gut tells me that the NCAA made the following determination "If we don't do something right away, it will look like we don't take child abuse seriously." In the end, I think the NCAA may have done the right thing for the wrong reasons, and that's what bothers me about the process. The NCAA, and a lot of members of the media, are "piling on" because they want to cover they own butts, and show everybody that "I'm taking this seriously."
