Go Gophers!!

They can only have 65 scholarship players a year, equivalent to an FCS program. Good thing Bill O'Brien has pro experience with a smaller roster...

The university has signed the consent decree of the penalties.

From Jay Bilas,ESPN....July 13

http://espn.go.com/college-football...caa-better-sanction-penn-state-administrators

"Its pattern over the years has been to punish prospectively. The NCAA rarely lays the blame at the feet of the actual wrongdoers. Rather, the NCAA seems fond of punishing those who remain behind, saddling them with sanctions that limit the ability of the blameless to move forward.

I have never felt this is fair or particularly effective. To sanction Penn State with a bowl ban, a television ban, loss of scholarships, loss of practice time or other penalties would do little or nothing to punish the monstrous behavior of Sandusky or the cowardly cover-up and indefensible inaction of Spanier, Schultz, Curley and Paterno."

"The NCAA, instead, should sanction the actual wrongdoers in this case: Spanier, Schultz, Curley and Paterno. The sanctions should not be forward-looking but based upon the actual wrongs committed by each. Unfortunately, the NCAA rarely, if ever, takes such action with regard to administrators. Usually, such action is reserved for coaches and players. The NCAA never, and I mean never, takes action against one of its own, a university president. The university president is the one who is supposed to be in charge, and the one the NCAA repeatedly tells us is in charge. Yet the president is never held accountable."

I get where this line of reasoning is coming from but can't say I agree with it. The situation with Penn State happened because of a culture that places the importance of football above all else. You can be sure that Penn State is not alone in this. A message needed to be sent that its not worth it to bury your head in the sand for football glory. Look at the reaction of the majority of the Penn State people to this scandal. A good portion of them are still in denial that their beloved JoePa did anything wrong. Hopefully this penalty will serve as a wake up call for people who value winning games to the detriment of everything else.

There are 22 starting positions. Would You rather face a USC/Alabama with 65 or most other schools with 85? USC stayed very competitive, preseason #1 this year but thin. The bowl ban hurts recruiting.

Despite the fact that these NCAA penalties are idiotic, unfounded, and arbitrary, I have made my $50 donation to GopherHole as promised to settle my previous wager with Stan.

Classy guy. Who was more idiotic, the NCCA or you for betting they would not impose sanctions on PSU?

Still believe recruiting will falter only because the product on the field is bad?

That statement was made before crippling sanctions were in place. Obviously that's not what I think now. Hopefully the concept of changing an opinion based on changes in situation isn't hard to comprehend.

It's called foresight. Have some.

It's called foresight. Have some.

It could also be called making assumptions. There is nothing wrong with that if you qualify your opinion to note that you're basing it on what you think will happen, but it's not the only correct way to think. There is nothing wrong with forming opinions based on facts as they come out. Unless you think my opinions have some real world power and that someone or something was harmed by me waiting until the NCAA actually ruled.

You can feel better that PSU likely initated and proposed this penalty. They needed closure as well.

Has anyone ever said you are long-winded?
