Ugh: Alvin Ellis May Re-Open Recruitment UPDATED 4/3: Ellis gets release from LOI

Threads go off on tangents all the time. Of all the battles he could pick, this one wasn't a big deal. Usually the tangents are people just fighting or they just aren't related to Gopher bball in any way. It's not like this one got off topic for very long or was completely irrelevant.

Either way, my question about Don regulating all exchanges stands. Can you honestly say that his controlling tendencies aren't annoying and unwarranted for the most part?

And his point is that they are past Gophers, as you said. I'm with the good Dr. on this one. It's an Ellis thread, not a conjecture thread.

I always have the back of a proctologist.

Spot up shooters like Blake thrive in up and down transitional basketball. You don't have to be lightning quick, you need great Bball IQ and instincts to get out and find your spots.

I figured that Hoffarber with his spot-up shooting would've loved this system. Fill the wing, let some dribble penetration happen and kick out to him. I suppose Welch wouldn't necessarily be a great fit...but it is tough when you get a slow small guard out on the floor. Regarding Wisconsin...I think Brust and Dekker would both like a more uptempo game if a coach decided to implement it. Finally...Ellis is a basketball player (I figured I absolutely must throw Ellis' name into mix in order to fear the wrath of off-topic police).

Big Brother Is Watching!!!

The last sentence of the editor's note is great.

"Meanwhile, a report has surfaced indicating that although the new Wildcats staff has already reached out to Ellis just as we said they should, Ellis has indicated that Northwestern will not be an option in his recruitment."

So basically everything you just read was a waste of time. Thanks for the clicks!

You may not have found this part of the article interesting, but I did:

"And in Ellis' case, those relationships that he built with those who recruited him at Minnesota were jeopardized as the result of how various matters were handled (or perhaps we should say not handled) during the university's search for a new coach.

This has absolutely nothing to do with the hiring of Richard Pitino as the new men's basketball coach at Minnesota and it is not the purpose of this entry to judge the quality of that decision. But the bottom line is that Ellis is no longer a Gopher because the administration did not reach out to him and let him know how important he was to the future of men's basketball at Minnesota.

In fact, Ellis says that during the entire two weeks between Smith's termination and Pitino's hiring, there was not one word of communication made between him and anyone at Minnesota regarding the direction the coaching search was going to take and whether Ellis would still be a part of the men's basketball program. Had this been done, there is a very good likelihood that Ellis would have never even sought his release.

Simply put, Ellis would have been an immediate impact recruit at Minnesota."

Pitino wants to bring in his own guys. Don't be surprised if the other Gopher recruit is released from his scholarship as well....

Although I am not sure I agree with the last line, the rest of the quote is interesting...

AD's office blew it big time on this. Regardless of what the next coach plans to do, you get in contact with the recruits. That's a shame.

Nine days? Seriously? So, what are they going to tell the kid if they do call him?

He seems like quite the diva for a three-star kid. Easily replaceable...take the next in line.

What was he being a diva about? This is a big time decision he was left in the dark about. Guys like Ellis are not easily replaceable this late in the season.

As with all things, this too shall pass, Ellis and Gophers will both be just fine.

I guess you can say they should have called the kid and assured him he still had a scholarship but this strikes me as someone that may have been looking for a way out already and found it. I mean it was under 2 weeks from the time Tubby was fired until Pitino was hired. The administration could have given him a token phone call but they would have had no information for him and he would have been just as in the dark with the call as he was without it.

The one thing I will say if it were to come out that he was reaching out to the U and no one would return a phone call that would be kind of bush league but when it is all said and done if the kid really wanted to be a Gopher he would have waited out those agonizing 9 whole days to see what happened and then made his decision at that point.

Well, somebody obviously talked to him, if indeed he was granted his release.

Something like:

"Listen Alvin, I know you had a good relationship with Tubby and the future seems unclear right now. But we're going to move quickly on hiring a new coach. You're part of our family, and I want to make sure you understand how important you are to us. We're confident that we'll have a coach who will play an exciting style that you'll enjoy and who will take our program to the next level. As soon as we have a coach on board we'll make sure you to have a chance to talk right away. If you hear anything during the search that concerns you, please let us know so we have a chance to talk about it."

Or, I suppose, they could do nothing and release him from his LOI on the morning they announce the new hire.

Maybe timing of the two not a coincidence. If Pitino had already agreed maybe he was also part of the decision to release.

You're assuming the new coach feels he is a fit. That may or may not be the case. For example, as I recall about half of Brewster's verbals disappeared when Kill showed up.

I'm assuming the Gophers are going to need scorers like Ellis in the future. I'm assuming the #3 recruit in Illinois is a solid player. I'm assuming there are not many left of his caliber in the class of 2013. I'm assuming there was somekind of cluster f**k since it has been reported on this board they are trying to get him to re-commit.

Why would Teague give the release at all? Shouldn't that be up to whomever the coach is? The AD grants releases? That seems odd to me. They should have told him that he had to wait. As far as I'm concerned, that's the part that Teague blew.

I think Teague had a few bigger pieces of pie to deal with than worry about one individual player. And if Ellis asked to be released, why not say "Ya, ok. Whatever." and move on.

I do think it is strange that he said he had no contact with anyone. Apparently, the first contact was him requesting his release (which happened at the MOST 8 days after hearing Tubby was fired).

It sounds to me like he was looking for a reason to decommit and evaluate his options elsewhere. If he was so concerned about the state of the hiring process his first contact with the U of M should have been a request for some info rather than a request to be released.

I still think Teague bungled this situation badly, but I also think Ellis found a convenient scapegoat to reassess his options.

Ellis leaving would be a big deal - why is everyone saying he is easily replaceable? It's not unreasonable to think he could potentially be our 5th best player next year (behind Dre, Austin, Coleman, EE) and our 6th man. Who are we supposed to get to replace him? Nearly all prospects - HS and JUCO - have already committed elsewhere.

This does sound plausible, but I thought I heard that Alvin Ellis was trying to recruit Gavin Schilling to Minnesota over Twitter in the days leading up to his commitment. It would seem if he was trying to get one of his buddies to come play here with him, that he was fairly enthusiastic about coming to the University of Minnesota, or at least about playing for Tubby, and thus maybe wasn't simply trying to find a good reason to back out of his commitment and letter of intent.
