Ugh: Alvin Ellis May Re-Open Recruitment UPDATED 4/3: Ellis gets release from LOI

Because it would've taken soooooo much time to call him...

I think Teague had a few bigger pieces of pie to deal with than worry about one individual player. And if Ellis asked to be released, why not say "Ya, ok. Whatever." and move on.

Because it would've taken soooooo much time to call him...

Or not call him. Could Teague not have just completely blown it off, if he chose to? "Clesty, give Ellis a call for me and tell him if he wants the release, he will have to request it from the new coach. He's just going to have to wait until then. Now I'm off to another massage. No interruptions, please."

He's the AD. Not the coach. Why would he make this decision (to grant the release)? It makes no sense to me.

Late to the party reading that article on Ellis, but it's certainly disappointing if his de-commitment played out in the manner the article suggests it did. The only rationale I can see for not calling Ellis would be if Teague wanted both Ellis and Foster to de-commit so that a new coach would have more scholarships to give out.

My guess is Alvin ends up at a very good program given the number of scholarships available across the country and the dearth of talent available to fill them. I can't remember the recruits name, but I remember when Dan Monson went head to head with Kansas for a Spring recruit (who I believe was from Illinois). Monson ended up losing out, but the kid never did anything at KU. Ellis is obviously a better quality recruit, but he should be smart about figuring out if a school really wants him or simply has a scholarship they need to fill.

I guess I don't know who else would grant the release if there's no coach at the time. While I have a huge problem with him not contacting Ellis, I don't have a problem with him giving the release. Ellis chose MN under the assumption that Tubby would be the coach. Given the circumstances, I think he has every right (especially after not being contacted) to explore his options. Teague is definitely an upgrade over Maturi, but this and the ridiculous contract extension he gave Tubby really bother me.

Teague did not give tubby the extension, Maturi did.

Teague did not give tubby the extension, Maturi did.

Not true. The ink on the contract is Teague's.. he did not have to sign it last Fall but he did and he put the finishing touches on it. I really don't care and am not bothered at all by it.. but its Teague's.

According to a reliable source De La Salle senior shooting guard Alvin Ellis is strongly considering trying to get out of his letter of intent with Minnesota and re-open his recruitment.

According to the same source Ellis has not heard anything from Minnesota since the news broke early in the week that the Gophers had fired Head Coach Tubby Smith. He has not decommited yet, but if he does he will be one of the most coveted prospects around garnering attention from high majors across the country.

Ellis is the third best prospect in a stacked class of 2013 in the state of Illinois. The shooting guard has great size and can score at all three levels. He has continued to improve his game throughout his career including becoming a better passer and rebounder.

Go Gophers!!

The hilited above are perhaps the 5 most important words of the 14 pages of this thread. Is Don Riley's bird loose again? There have been a lot of reliable sources posting on the whole coach search subject lately. Media types/hypes are likely very disappointed by the lack of leaks from the AD's office. There should not be any leaks at all surrounding personnel matters. I give props to Teague in that regard. Teague has made no attempt at responding to all these reliable sources. There should there be no leaks about individual personnel matters. Leaks from reliable sources seem to abound coming from other candidates and in this case a reliable source who says a recruit has not heard anything from Minnesota. Reliable sources, hmmm!

Alex Foster himself told Gopherhole in an interview that no one from the University other than Dre and Austin Hollins had talked to him in the week plus after Tubby was canned. Is that a reliable enough source for ya ?

Good lord it was 9 friggin days....9. Are these recruits such babies they need constant hand holding and to be told how special they are every second of the day. And once again in here we have people jumping to conclusions again about stuff they know nothing about just like during the coaching search and tossing blame around in every direction.

Looks to me like the kid wanted a way out of his LOI and he got it. Would have been nice if he stayed but as others pointed out when the coach that recruited you gets canned if you want out you should be granted a release.

You can blame NT for Ellis not being a Gopher because he fired Tubby but don't blame him for supposedly not making some meaningless token phone call to a recruit because the kid hadn't had his weekly dose of being told how special and important he was.

I'm assuming the Gophers are going to need scorers like Ellis in the future. I'm assuming the #3 recruit in Illinois is a solid player. I'm assuming there are not many left of his caliber in the class of 2013. I'm assuming there was somekind of cluster f**k since it has been reported on this board they are trying to get him to re-commit.

Well if they reported it on Gopherhole it must be a fact.

I guess I don't know who else would grant the release if there's no coach at the time.

I feel like I'm beating my head against a wall on this.

How about NOBODY? Tell him he has to wait until the next coach is hired and he can speak to him about it. Look at it this way, if there was a class of 7 guys coming in and they all asked Teague for the release, should he grant them all and leave the coach with no players before the new coach has a chance to talk to any of them?

Bleed, are you saying there is a possibility that he actually HASN'T been granted the release? That would make a lot more sense to me.

I think this whole thing probably goes back to the issue that the search didn't really go as planned. If they planned for a two week plus search then they would have also had on their schedule a call to the recruits and a discussion with the current players- just as part of the process. My guess is that they thought they had Smart or somebody ready to sign just days after the firing and that the coach would be able to deal with the player issues right away. Then it didn't go that way and they went into a fire drill mode and missed a few major details in the process. At the end of the day I think Pitino will be a homerun for the AD, but I'm betting the process wasn't a bit pretty.

While I still haven't heard anything that makes believe Ellis has been released, the many reports might be accurate. Fair chance they're not - the masses get things wrong all the time.

However, the conversations that have gone on would make it seem unlikely that Ellis will ultimately wind up at Minnesota. Still could, but wouldn't get too hopeful on that occurring.

Pitino will get his own recruits that fit his system better. Good luck Mr Ellis............

If Ellis loves Tubby so much, tell him to enjoy Lubbuck. I have complete faith in Pitino's ability to recruit new players. I wouldn't be hurt if they let Foster go too.

Foster and Ellis should both get their release. Free up the limited open scholarship spots for Pitino Hires.......

Yeah. Let's dump Dre, Austin, Joe, Elliot and Buggs too. Clean house. Get that Tubby garbage out of here! Teague should give them all their release while Rich is at the Final Four. That way, Rich can start fresh.

The team only gets 13 scholarships. 4 have opened up due to graduation. Pitino won't be able to find 4 add'l recruits that are better than Foster and Ellis. Your know it all, insider-wannabe statements are very annoying.

Maybe you should take up the game of chess? Then you might understand strategy and be able to create an execution plan. Let me give you the answer, it is better to get the players you want, that fit your program and who have the desire to play for you. These guys were both Tubby guys and it may make a lot of sense to hold out for a full Pitino class in 2014. Just because they have open scholarships does not mean they need to be wasted.

Ellis and Foster are at best 3 star players that might or might not fit into Pitino's system. He should be the judge of that and recruit the players he thinks fit............
Thank you for the compliment about being annoyed....

You bet. Maybe you can print your compliment and post it on your fridge. Based on your strategies, I assume you've been consulting at Best Buy?

Best Buy? One thing I have noticed is that m two s does not frequent WalMart parking lots with any wallets.

Few things sadder in life than hearing "I was at Walmart and then things got worse.."

I digress, back to the relatives merits of Misters Ellis and Foster versus kids that don't have an offer.

I drive a Dodge Stratus!!!!!

Figured this was appropriate since this thread has turned to worthless bickering.

Yep, I think any recruit who asks for a release when you fire a coach should be granted that release. He was recruited by that coach, he signed with that coach, I think holding him to that letter would be terrible. If the new coach who comes in wants to recruit him and he's interested, then he can resign. But he shouldn't be forced to "hear out" the new coach, he should have the discretion to hear out the new coach.

But signees are "guaranteed" nothing about a coach. They sign with a school, not a coach. But that's not really my beef. My beef is that Teague (supposedly) granted the release. The head of the basketball program should be the one releasing him, not the AD, especially when the coach is one day from being hired. It's absurd.

Again, if we had a 7 person class, and they all asked for their release, would you condone the AD granting them all? One day before he hired the new coach??

Obviously, anyone with half a brain agrees that, yes, ultimately, if he was dying to play for Tubby - or for any other reason, really - he should be granted the release. I'm not disputing that. I just think it's not the AD's job and he took authority (and flexibility) from a coach he was about to hire.

All this is out the window, of course, if the real story is that Dick Pit told Tegue to get rid of him.
