Ugh: Alvin Ellis May Re-Open Recruitment UPDATED 4/3: Ellis gets release from LOI

I think he is going to be lucky to see the floor as anything but and 7th or 8th man.

Really? You think that he thought that he was too good for MN? He waited for a week and since NT did not communicate well, he is going to shoot those 3's against the Gophers now. Great AD job sofar.

Go Gophers
Yeah really. If he wanted to be a Gopher he would've waited a week. We don't know what Pitino's role was in this. Perhaps he told NT to go ahead and release Ellis (before Pitino was introduced), or he watched tape and decided he didn't want to bring in Ellis after the de-commit. NT spent a week making a multi-million dollar decision on hiring a new coach rather than focusing on keeping a recruit happy

From what I can piece together, it seems like Ellis took the opportunity to go elsewhere and we showed him the door without looking back.

Well, at least now with Tubby gone we'll have a chance to defend those 3's...

+1 Well said. The problem is not with Coach P. If you choose to ignore a kid, this wasn't the right one. And yes, he did fit Coach P's running game.

Considering Pitino never even attempted to get Ellis to re-commit, I'm going to assume he didn't fit the system.

Do we really know if Izzo offered him a scholarship? That's not real clear in the article. Sounds to me like the writer is making that assumption?

If so, is the offer contingent on a scholarship opening up (Adreian Payne to NBA)? Does MSU have any scholarships available for 2013-14?

Reading between the lines it sounds like Ellis will head to East Lansing only if/when Payne decides to forego his senior season.

Didn't seem clear to me either. I'm assuming it's contingent on Payne or Harris. Probably also invited him to walk-on 1 year if he chose to do so (I know that's rare).

Very true and very funny. Tubby's teams have not defended the 3's very well for sure. I am not sure why. If Richard is going to press like his dad, Tubby, Shaka,.... there will always be an open man who could take advantage of the press. I might be wrong but this could be a reason for Tubby's teams?

Coach P did not invent the running game, it was invented by Orville and Wilbur Press.

I just got off the horn with Norwood. Due to my prominence as a senior member of Gopherhole, he was instructed to contact me posthaste to allay any concerns I may have over losing 2 fine recruits. He said he didn't care if they were the f**kin' Big Three themselves, those prima donnas could wait patiently by the phone, until he was damn good and ready to call.

A talented and athletic all-around player with good size and shooting ability didn't fit the system? I'm guessing he thought that it was too late to try to get Ellis back. It's pretty rare that a player decommits and then returns.

No one knows for sure, all we know is that Pitino didn't pursue him. There haven't even been any reports that Pitino even contacted him once. You'd think if he was that special of a talent he'd at least make a phone call to gauge his interest.

Let's get this straight.

Ellis requested release for LOI before new coach was named.

NT obliged request.

Rich Pitino named coach of Gophers.

People are pinning the blame on Pitino because he has not contacted Ellis about recommitting.

Who packed it in? Ellis. Blame him for this, and no one else.

Ellis didn't "pack it in" Don. He was not contacted and he chose to open up his recruitment. That's pretty standard. We had a choice whether to attempt to re-recruit him or not and for whatever reason it appears we chose not to. Maybe Ellis said that he was done with us - maybe not, we will never know. If he turns out to be really good they may regret not being in contact with him or re-recruiting him. If not- then it will be great that they made the decision they did. My guess is that another Ellis- Mike, probably was a key contributor to the decisions that we made (due to his basketball experience I assume he had Ellis scouted).

If the kid is Tyus Jones do you think the AD's office contacts him during the search? You bet they would have and A. Ellis knows that the fact that the AD didn't call him spoke loud and clear.

Ellis knows more than Izzo and all of the other coaches that offered him after he decommited?

Nope. I wish we had Ellis on board. I'm suggesting that Ellis and Teague made the call and I'm not so sure it was the right one. Pitino doesn't come into play much here because my guess is that the horse had left the barn. My feeling (hope I'm wrong) is that Ellis will be a good college player.

If Pitino didn't want him, I would question his evaluation skills. Ellis is really good and fits any system. He is better than anyone Pitino had at his previous stop.

My guess is that Pitino would love to have him but was told early that Ellis was not open to returning.

The only reason I could see Pitino not "wanting" Ellis is because we are pretty dreep at the 2 guard, or at least have a lot of guys who could play there. Or he possibly has someone else in mind. Not sure.

Need bigs and a PG though IMO. A big is most important though, Tarik Black would be amazing.

Beej, you know a lot about testing the character of potential employees, due to your upper level management position. Sometimes you have to be a devil's advocate to see how an applicant reacts to your methods. Ellis failed the character test. He quit before Pitino was even on board. If a big time college basketball player is gonna be a quitter under unknown circumstances, what's to say he is not a quitter on the floor under the lights of the big time. Think about that.

Agreed. From everything we've read about Ellis, and obviously you've seen him play a lot, there's no reason he wouldn't fit Pitino's system. It's not like he's a one-dimensional player. As bga alluded to, I think Pitino figured it was too late to have a realistic shot, and his resources would be better used elsewhere.

That's quite the jump in logic there. I guess whatever makes you feel better about a recruit leaving.

Who was whining about Pitino not contacting Ellis? I feel like you like to exaggerate complaints on here so that you can complain about whining that isn't really happening, or at least not at the level you claim. People are upset that people in the AD didn't contact Ellis. I haven't noticed people complaining about Pitino in regards to Ellis.

Spartan fan here. Yes by all accounts he's been offered a scholarship. We have room for him with Kearney transferring. Next year our team would be

Sr: Appling, Payne
JR: Dawson, Trice, Byrd, Gauna
Soph: Harris, Costello, Valentine
Freshman: Schilling, Ellis and Kaminski (RS)

Technically we'd still be 1 under as we'll only have 12 guys on scholarship next year.

Yeah, I'd think MSU has to be on top then. I guess Izzo wouldn't be quite as torn up about Tubby's dismissal if he lands one of his kids haha

Not exactly, when Kentucky ran Tubby out of town that led MSU to getting Draymond Green and Izzo was still furious at how the Kentucky fans treated him. Izzo was choked up about Tubby being fired but said he understood why it had to happy he just wasn't happy about it. Tubby is one of the guys that Izzo is very close to and he hates to see his friends fail. I think the interest in Ellis is coming more from us losing Kearney midseason and Izzo wanting to add another guard into the rotation.

Thanks for the update. Much obliged.

I have no ill will towards Alvin Ellis, but I hope this doesn't turn into a Greg Jones situation/Tim Brewster situation.

Greg Jones (a linebacker) decommitted from Minnesota after Mason was fired/Brewster was hired, and signed with Michigan state. He was a two time All-American.

Tim Brewster picked up Harold Howell/Ralph Spry/Tray Herndon//Damien White/Clint Brewster/Curtis Thomas/Kyle Theret very late. Some of these players were very buzzworthy and almost all washed out within a year or so. Theret was seen as a throw in and ended up contributing all four years.

If your definition of fine includes recruits who aren't in the top 50 at their respective positions. This meme of yours about how we lost great players doesn't hold up to scrutiny. One was thought so highly of that a new assistant coach told him we don't need his services.
