Ugh: Alvin Ellis May Re-Open Recruitment UPDATED 4/3: Ellis gets release from LOI

Ellis said Foster told him that he will be waiting to meet the new coach.
 

Ya know guys, it's not like the cupboard is bare, with what we have returning. There is a core of good players to keep us relevant next year, and if the right circumstances occur, some surprisingly good things could happen.

I think it's a big loss, I didn't mean to minimize it at all. I even put that in my posting. I just meant that we aren't in desperate need of more guards, we have 5 guys who have played quite a bit.

But you're right, Ellis is a big loss (if it happens), I was just talking about putting bodies out there. This was something that I realized would be a major risk with firing Tubby though, it's just part of the process.

Because essentially you're saying that the Gophers made the tournament based on Welch last year.

All of the other guards are back next season and Ellis does very little to combat the loss of Mbakwe and WIlliams.

100% agree. We did hear that some were applying for Drake's job and we knew that his son was not coming back so why firing him?????
 

I don't understand why they let him out of the LOI before the new coach was named. He waited things long. Another 2-3 days would have been reasonable. The chances of the Patino (or whoever) convincing him to stay would have gone up significantly. Now he'll have Tubby and the others who were in on him in his ear.

I think it's considered pretty tacky to not let a kid out of his commitment, especially when you fire the staff that recruited him. If he likes the new coach, he can re-commit.
 




Same two reasons he wasn't contacted and left hanging when Tubby was fired.

Agreed, but usually the deal is 'hear the new coach out, then if you want out, we'll let you out.' It's a minor difference in the end, but not insignificant.
 




I wish the kid success no matter what but I have to wonder what he thinks of Mr. Pitino.
 

He's waited for two weeks for a coach?? According to his interview. Some school must have got to him. If Pitino wants him and can recruit him fine. If not it's too bad he can't go along for the ride as Gopher BB rises to new heights.

He was contacted and told to be patient till we got a coach. This AD wasn't going to let him hang. He knows what he is doing.
 

NT dropped the ball on not contacting Ellis. Norwoods "VILLA 7" and their ego 's are out of control. Why would you not contact the only half way decent recruit that Minnesota has on the horizon and try to keep him in the loop as to what the VILLA 7 hiring group was up to? NT/Ellis and their ego's think they can win games all by themself. Well NT/Ellis have the control of the basketball team that they so desperatelty required. Now hopefully they can win without getting any recruits to come here. They do have CONTROL OF THE BASKETBALL PROGRAM.

They contacted him. You don't know what your talking about and have so much irrational hate for Teague you are jumping to conclusions. Mike Ellis had talked to him and told him to wait until we got a new coach.

It doesn't much matter anymore because it's in the past and they have a coach who will now call Ellis. The report out of Chicago as of last Friday/Saturday range was that Ellis had not been in contact with the Gopher program. Do you have some different information? Anyway - what's done is done.
 

VILLA 7!!! Smarter than everybody else. The Villa 7 hiring process reminds me of Brad Childress. Brad was always alot smarter than all the other coaches and so is NT & ELLIS. I am sure that the rest of the BIG TEN programs are quacking in their boots over the little Richie hiring.

I hope Ellis keeps an open mind and at least gives Pitino a chance. I'd love to see him in Minnesota.
 

He waited "2 weeks?"

By my count it was 9 days. Then again, I'm a math teacher so I care about these kind of things.
 

Looking at the grades given for recruits he maybe a diamond in the rough but he didn't rank close to an Andre Hollins or any of our starting guards on ESPN. Tubby's recruiting over the last year was pathetic. Good luck to this kid would like to have him stay but its not a huge loss.
