Ugh: Alvin Ellis May Re-Open Recruitment UPDATED 4/3: Ellis gets release from LOI

I don't know...Ellis had an incredible senior year. Foster, played fine, but didn't totally blow up. I also highly doubt Foster's big offers (Wisconsin, Tennessee, Illinois, etc.) were still standing by the time he committed to us. It seems like his recruitment really died down. Could be hard for him to find a program as good as Minnesota's this late in the process.

I would give it a 2% chance that any school withdrew an offer from Foster.

I remember when Brenda left for the east coast, and before Pam was hired, Lindsey called all the recruits.

The difference here may be that a member of the team took it upon herself to be a LEADER. Any volunteers??? Austin, Andre, Joe....

So let's waste a recruiting class, go and pick up some scraps and forfeit some future years? Yeah, I don't know about that.

Yep, you quoted me exactly "let's waste a recruiting class and pick up some scraps and (maybe I used three more "ands", not sure) forfeit some future years".

Do I have to explain my point again? If a kid is having second thoughts - justifiably so with a completely new staff - then he has every right to keep his options open and if he determines he should go somewhere else, then he should.

Or would you rather he come here no matter what, potentially be unhappy, then transfer mid-year at some point? That always works out well.

He may be a nice player, but if he determines this isn't any longer a good fit, then he should go somewhere else. The scholarship doesn't leave with him. We do get to keep that.

@aellis21: Flip Saunders turned down the job.! #Wow

Go Gophers!!

Ok. So let's speculate about what he will do instead? If he doesn't want to be here, he will reopen his recruitment. That is not good for us. Ellis is a very good player. We will not be able to fill his scholarship with a similar caliber player.

Ellis just withdrew his commitment:

This all is officially starting to piss me off according to sources.

So yeah Teague hurry up just a little bit.....................

Argh. Yet another reason to be frustrated with Teague and this process.

Hard to switch coaches without something like this happening but a bummer nevertheless. Best wishes to the young man.

If you wanted Tubby gone, you should have expected the whole thing to take 10-14 days. That's just standard. If you weren't willing to risk this type of thing happening, you probably should have been on the Keep Tubby bandwagon. (I'm not saying you in particular, I have no idea where you stood. Just in general, firing a coach and hiring a new one takes about this long. This hasn't been slow)

As soon as we fired Tubby, I pretty much figured our upcoming recruits may be a problem. It's too bad though, I was hoping maybe he would stick it out, see who comes in first.

No, don't talk sense.

Teague should have hired someone faster than anyone has hired a coach in the Big 10.

At least make a call considering they're going to have no guard off the bench next year.

Tim Miles to Colorado State...Several transferred, many scholarship players... He improved with his boys.
Tim Miles to Nebraska...inherited a mess, won more games than anyone expected.

Rich Pitino to Minnesota? May have some requests to reconsider LOI, May have some transfers.
Rich Pitino to Minnesota? A chance to build his own dynasty with his own horses.

I'm not concerned with this. If we get the right coach, we'll have plenty of opportunities for Ellis-like recruits. He was a nice player, but not a program changer or anything. Plus he said we are still in the mix depending on the coach.

We could use another guy to handle the ball (you're right), but Ellis was more of a slash type of player, right? It stinks losing Ellis, I'm not trying to minimize it, but when I wanted Tubby gone, I realized this was a distinct possibility. It happens.

Plus, how awesome could it be to have 5 scholarships for 2014? Tyus, Vaughn, Travis, Okafor, another stud! Haha :D

He was the difference between the tournament an no tournament and unless the new coach get's an impact player in April there's no chance the Gophers make the tournament.

Ellis= shoot + slash

Big loss if it ends up that way. Hope not.

I was not on the Fire Tubby bandwagon, but I wish we would have explored firing some of his assistants (which he was apparently willing to do).

Collateral damage.

When you fire a coach, this is part of the deal. Wish the young man well. Hopefully Ellis won't commit to another school right away. If he fits the kind of player the new Gopher coach wants, maybe he can re-recruit Ellis and still bring him aboard.

LOL WAT? Most ridiculous statement I've seen on here in a while and that's saying something.

If we're still in the mix, that's nice at least. Means it wasn't all about Tubby, but I'm guessing no matter who it is will have his hands full trying to get him back.
