Ugh: Alvin Ellis May Re-Open Recruitment UPDATED 4/3: Ellis gets release from LOI

Again, this doesn't bug me as much as it apparently does some of you. When Kill took over, he honored the scholarships that Brew had offered, but how many of those kids will still be around for the full four/five years?

It's great that Ellis was/is willing to come here, but it's not as though there won't be other guys available next year if he does switch (even with Tubby still here, me thinks next year was going to be brutal anyway - no front court and no point guard = no good).

So let's waste a recruiting class, go and pick up some scraps and forfeit some future years? Yeah, I don't know about that.

he should de-commit and see where that gets him, it would make alot of sense for him to do it now especially since he know's who the new coach is. a kid looking for attention!

Way to go Norwood perhaps your intent is to destroy the basketball program? maybe one of your boys should try talking to the recruits since you fired everybody else

SOP.

Nothing unusual here. Any commit (even though they knowingly commit to the University and NOT the coach) can and should reconsider their decision in a situation such as this.

Elvis could help in the future and play a part in building the program into something solid (i.e., at least one that occasionally has a winning Big Ten record) and would come into a pretty good situation without early pressures, but some opportunity.

That said, as of today Minnesota has three returning starting guards.

Just need to relax and let things play out.

Not knowing everything now is much better than having a low-hanging ceiling hanging over the team.

Is Teague even allowed to contact recruits?
BarnBoy;689992]Oh, the emotion of a coaching search. Everything is pure speculation. Teague goes from hero to zero in 15 clicks of a forum post. For all we know, he's still got his #1 and all the recruits have been told. Or wait, maybe he's on his 10th and the sky is falling! God, I hate Teague, and love him. My head hurts.
Anyone who doesn't want Teague fired has low expectations.

This crowd is a portion of the Tubby crowd that is simply the pro-Flip crowd. The fact that it wasn't announced yesterday that Flip was our new coach has some people angry. They think the name of Flip Saunders would make us a national power and there is no way we could lose a recruit with Flip on board.

Should Teague have called? Sure, but I'm not even sure it's legal for an Athletic Director at the end of March to have direct contact with a recruit.

Why not? They are signed recruits.

The issue isn't with them, my questioning is whether an Athletic Director can have direct contact with a person who is not enrolled at the University in March?

(I can't find a definition of allowable contact to include anyone but a coach)

I'm not saying he can or couldn't, I am genuinely curious if an AD can contact recruits.

If there's any concern, I'm sure he's aware and could name himself "interim acting HC" or whatever to take on these powers.

No worries - as you all know, Tubby can't recruit. Ellis is a Tubby recruit, therefore he is no good and his departure would be of no consequence.

He might be good, he might not.

We do know that tubby didnt develop the players he had here for 6 years very well. Rodney still cant handle the ball.

I think it makes more sense to have the new coach call him. The AD doesn't mean anything to this kid the new coach needs to do the calling. This kid looks to be a solid player but many other guards have been ranked higher. Let the new coach call him.

Oh I dunno - maybe something like "the University cares about you and will keep you informed thorugh the process..."

It's basic courtesy.

I understand that. There's certainly no harm in it. But this isn't going to last months like when Monson was fired. It's only been 3 days, and a call from an AD he's had very little contact with probably isn't going to mean much.

I agree with an earlier poster. Knowing Tubby, he's probably a Chip Armelin type anyway. Ellis was the one guy from next year's Freshman class that I wasn't real high on.

I'd rather have the new coach come in with some buzz and have the luxury of having another empty spot open for HIM to fill. I say rip up his letter of intent and let him explore the market...I'm guess the demand won't be real high for him.

You were higher on Foster?

LOL "the one guy you weren't high on?" There are only two guys in next year's class and Ellis was far and away the better of the two.

What the hell are you talking about?

I remember when Brenda left for the east coast, and before Pam was hired, Lindsey called all the recruits.

Exactly what I was going to post. Always hard to compare the men's and women programs but what the men have sorely lacked for a long time are players who take true leadership roles. Can someone close to the program suggest who the leaders on the team are?

The AD can definitely call a recruit. The Northwestern AD, Jim Phillips, flew to visit with Jaren Sina after Carmody was fired. Sina later de-committed.

The longer this goes on the worse it feels. I feel like too many people were excited about Tubby being fired due to the assumption that we'd hire a significantly better coach. Hard to not start losing optimism. People outside of MN underestimate how nice living in MN can be, but I think we tend to overestimate how appealing MN is to other people because we think of how appealing it SHOULD be, not how appealing it actually is to them. Plus, when you look at the programs that actually do well, the area itself doesn't seem to be near the top in terms of the most influencing factors. Damn you lack of practice facility and Maturi with your false promise to Tubby.

While it couldn't hurt to call them, what exactly are Teague or Ellis going to tell them at this point that would change anything? They don't have to let them out of the committment, but I'm sure they will after they've at least heard the new coach out.

It's just poor form. It's only two freakin' phone calls.

I think you're right. After Rutgers' football coach left a week or so before signing day, I remember reading about their AD frantically filling out paperwork to allow him and some others to recruit.

If Ellis is thinking of opening up his recruitment, there is probably a good chance Foster is too, even though he isn't as highly touted.

I don't know...Ellis had an incredible senior year. Foster, played fine, but didn't totally blow up. I also highly doubt Foster's big offers (Wisconsin, Tennessee, Illinois, etc.) were still standing by the time he committed to us. It seems like his recruitment really died down. Could be hard for him to find a program as good as Minnesota's this late in the process.

Ellis and Foster need to do whats best for them and to consider their options. Its the same with every player on the team. Teague and the university are doing the same. Its big money, only problem is the student-athletes make no money and the AD, coach, and staff all do. If I was a player I would look after me rather than feel I have an alegence to a school that resolves around the bottom line. Good luck all.
