Ugh: Alvin Ellis May Re-Open Recruitment UPDATED 4/3: Ellis gets release from LOI

I don't believe that's true. However, Teague could have made himself interim coach and then contacted him. I believe only assistant coaches and coaches can contact recruits (I could be wrong), until they've enrolled.

I interned with NIU's athletic department my 3rd year of law school and while we didn't deal with this issue while I was there, I seem to remember most (if not all) of the contact rules do not pertain to players that have already signed their letter of intent because it essentially makes them a student at the university. I'm too busy and lazy to go look up the rule though.

But honest question, who would you rather have? McNeil or Ellis?

McNeil
Rivals - (3 star) 41st ranked SG, Okla, VCU, Rutgers offers
ESPN - (2 star) 92nd ranked SG, Okla, VCU, Louisville, Washington offers

Ellis
Rivals (3 star) NR SG, KSU, Nebraska, WSU offers
ESPN (3 star) 56th ranked SG, no other offers

They are somewhat similar recruits. Ellis seems like he has a bigger build and is probably a better scorer. McNeil seems like he's a better ball handler (I seem him referred to as a PG quite a bit) and maybe a better pure shooter.

Assuming (big assumption) that we could have one of these two players. . .who is a better fit this season?

Nope, I trust you. You'd know more than I would.

Yeah, he should have contacted them.

This season? I'd say McNeil. We need another ball handler to allow Dre to play off the ball more and to do so while not increasing Mav's minutes too much.

I'd love to take both. If I had to choose one, I think I might lean towards McNeil just because it would give us another PG option and potentially allow Dre to play more SG. It would also be solid insurance against Tyus leaving the state. I like Ellis though, even though BuckyBadgerMan seems to think I think he's trash.

If there was any issue all they would have had to do was assign Mike Ellis/anyone as interim head coach so that he could call the recruits. I doubt that would have been needed.

If the AD can not contact a recruit in a case like this, the rule needs to be changed.

makes no sense if Pitino is such an upgrade why Ellis would not jump at the chance to keep is committment

Because he's probably never met Rich Pitino. You think that might make a slight difference?

Yeah, i'd probably rather have McNeil on style. However, I think I am more impressed with Ellis's highlight tapes (I'm obviously not a recruiting guru). Both would be nice.

Call me crazy, but I think the coaching change benefits Mav probably more than any player. It plays into his two strengths. He is a good active defender (looks comfortable putting pressure on) and he has turned himself into a good shooter. If Mav is allowed to just be an outsider shooter and pressure defender, I think he'll play really well (I wouldn't mind seeing him play a bit without the ball too).

You have to remember that Ellis is just a young and confused high school grad. On the other hand, Gopherholers are much older and a lot wiser.

I' ll call you crazy. lol You do make a point. My problem with Maverik is the glaring unforced errors at times. He does seem to be a capable shooter, maybe defender.

I agree with you about Mav. I always thought he'd be better off the ball. He can shoot and it would limit his opportunities to turn the ball over (although he did improve in this regard this year). One of the most frustrating aspects of Tubby's tenure is the multiple guards he recruited and expected to play PG despite it not being their natural position, or the fact that they just weren't capable of playing PG in the big ten.

Ha. Yeah, I don't think those will suddenly go away. I just think the couple things Mav does well (assuming his shooting wasn't a fluke last year), will be maximized by an uptempo system where he won't be forced to make a lot of PG plays.

Yeah, I agree. I think his problem is that he never really was able to recruit a decent starting PG. I believe Nolan committed to Monson (I am probably wrong on that) and he's the only pure PG of any real ability that we were able to sign. Mav's struggles are largely because he can't play PG in the Big 10. Dre is one of my favorite recent Gophers, but I think he'd be better served playing off the ball more.

#3 recruit in Illinois class of 2013. Which Tubby fall recruit don't you like? Watch his film. This is a huge loss.

Just to clarify, I'm pretty sure he was ranked #3 in Chicago, not the entire state, by one service. Still a good player though, and would suck to lose him.

Didnt we cover this last night? ;)

Believe my post is accurate. Site was Chicago Hoops? You are correct in that the Sun Times had him at #8. I don't recall seeing a kid that can finish with his offhand so well. He's a true scorer with 3 point range.

Eh, maybe so, thought I recalled it was a city thing. But yeah, I really hope he reconsiders, cause he looked like he had some real potential to make some noise in his career.

Crazy. Mav is not a good defender.

#Northwestern has reached out to 2013 SF Alvin Ellis (De La Salle, Ill.), but a source confirmed he is not interested

Yes, your original post was accurate. He was rated the #3 player in the state of Illinois by this service. The site ranking might have a Chicago bias... but the ranking was for the entire state.

Mav can't play shooting guard either. He isn't a good enough ball handler or distributor to play PG. But he doesn't have the size or athleticism to play the 2. I really think that his days here are numbered. Mo clearly would fall into that category as well, and maybe Oto too.

Mav will be back and will play next year.

Northwestern to land Alvin Ellis?

Alvin Ellis (Chicago/De La Salle Institute), a 2013 three-star shooting guard, decommitted from Minnesota after Tubby Smith was fired and it looks like Northwestern has a good chance at the Chicago native.

Before choosing Minnesota, Ellis received offers from Kansas State, Wichita State and Northwestern with Tennessee and Nebraska showing great interest. Minnesota remains in the race but is not thought to be a serious contender. New Northwestern coach Chris Collins is looking to start off his recruiting efforts with a bang, and landing Ellis would certainly be that kind of move. Ellis is from Chicago and could become an integral part of the team in his first couple years. If Collins demonstrates immediately that he can come in and recruit Chicago in the same way he did at Duke, the Wildcat faithful will be even more excited about the future with Collins at the helm.

Are we sure he isn't interested?

I would imagine he wouldn't have asked us to shred his LOI if he had any intention of seeing who who our next coach was before deciding.

Ha, what a pointless article. Reads like wishful thinking by a Northwestern fan. There's no proof that he is even considering Northwestern. My guess is he ends up at KSU if they have a scholarship for him. Weber knows Chicago recruiting and KSU had a decent year.
