Trent Lockett granted release to be "closer to home" UPDATED (4/10): Marq Leading

Hope his mom ends up alright.

Have to imagine Mav and Chip would be the ones gone if we got Lockett and Trevor returned. How sick would this roster look?

PG: Andre Hollins, Julian Welch
SG: Trent Lockett, Joe Coleman, Wally Ellenson
SF: Austin Hollins, Oto Osenieks, Charles Buggs
PF: Rodney Williams, Mo Walker, Andre Ingram
C: Trevor Mbakwe, Elliot Eliason

Sure we don't have a 3rd scholarship PG, but I'd still roll with that team all day long.

That's a team with the perfect balance of budding talent and veteran leadership. Dear god I hope Trent's mother is alright.

Tubby is going to have to answer to his hockey-style substitution pattern no doubt. Would you want to play for a coach with such a quick hook? I don't know. The best things Minnesota has going for itself is location, strong nucleus and perhaps Dan Coleman (Lockett graduated with Royce, Broghammer, Williams and Cowels. Coleman mainly played JV that year). In any case, I hope he lands in a comfortable place considering his situation. If he comes, he comes. This has some extenuating circumstances.

There is no doubt we could use him and he would play good minutes day 1. However, I also would add that its not like he would be our best player and probably he would be 4th best (Dre, Rodney, Austin).. but that said, having a starting caliber player transfer in, who can shoot, is not a bad thing.

I am a little bittersweet, if in fact the only reason he is tranferring would be because mom has cancer, its hard for me to get excited about it in a weird way, more so, I just feel bad for him and his family. That said, if he chooses us, I would love it.. Seems obvious that chip or Mav would be the obvious choice for transferring and Mav wouldn't on his own. I would hate to say it, but would probably choose to lose Chip over Mav, only because Mav can play point and thats important if a key injury happens..

My guess, 100% guess, is Tubby has possibly known about this (maybe via his family reaching out?) and this could explain why Chip is not seeing minutes as he could be "encouraged" to transfer to make room for Lockett.

My theory is no one really expects Trev back, were that to happen, though, I could see Ingram as an unfortunate casualty as they'd both be seniors and with all due respect to Ingram, Trevor is better.

Toss the kid aside - very good......

Not that is matters, but many would argue that he would step in and be our best player, not the 4th. He has had much more overall success and possesses more skills than Williams and Austin Hollins. U can't compare him and Andre at this point.

You must not watch the games if you think Tubby has a "quick hook." Since the big ten has started, the starters have been playing big minutes. For example, look at the box scores in this tournament. Starters are playing huge minutes - when not in foul trouble.

Dan Coleman played JV behind college juniors?

Not the circumstances I'd want to get him, but let's not kid ourselves, Lockett would be a nice "get" for the Gophers. Sure, we're in pretty good shape at the 2 & 3, but if there are no off-court issues (I haven't heard any) you make room for a guy like that if he wants to be on your roster. Productive 3-year players from a major-conference program don't potentially fall in your lap very often. When they do (see Wilson, Russell, QB, Wisconsin), you shouldn't blink. Even Butthead Bielema was able to figure that out. Lockett in the rotation would make the Gophers a better and more versatile basketball team. If the (returning) players don't feel the same way, then they're probably more concerned about their own PT than they are about winning.

All that said, I'd guess Iowa State is his most likely destination. As long as Royce White remains in Ames, the Cyclones are an "it" program. If I'm a guy who can put the ball in the basket (which Lockett can), playing with White has an appeal to me.

Someone posted he was already considering transferring and adding a senior who would eat up some of his minutes can't help the situation. However, as Lockett is a Hopkins alum I'm sure he and Coleman get along and may help the chemistry issue he is supposedly feeling. It's about the minutes though. He'd be the likely bump from the starting line up.

Lets see...starting shooting guard that can't shoot getting 20+ minutes per game as a FR at his home town school where he is third generation and he is thinking about transferring? Crazy talk...ridiculous crazy talk.

Sounds like Royce is headed to the NBA. Minnesota definitely seems the most logical to me, especially now.

I'm not excited about a player who averaged 3.2 turnovers per game...

Would fit in well with the Gophers.

Slightly lower TO rate than Andre/Julian/Maverick... but, pretty brutal. And his highest of his career this year.

Best wishes to the Lockett family during this difficult time.

Royce is likely headed to the NBA, per his press conference this afternoon. ISU doesn't have any open 'ships for next year, so someone else would have to be leaving too. However, ISU is the closest big six school to the Twin Cities.

Guessing that might have some to do with the talent around him, I remember watching ASU during that Old Spice tournament and there wasn't a whole lot of skill there besides Lockett.

He was at 2.4 turnovers a game last season, so I've got to believe talent around him might have something to do with it as well.

This is terrible news, you hate to see a family go through this. My thoughts are with the Lockett family.
