Tarik Black Watch Thread UPDATED 5/20: Black to Kansas

– Florida International senior forward Rakeem Buckles, who sat out last season after transferring from Louisville, still has not decided if he will follow Pitino to Minnesota. He would need to get a waiver from the NCAA just to be allowed to play this season. He needs to take summer classes to graduate and is expected to figure out his future then.

– Memphis forward Tarik Black would be a much more realistic option for the Gophers. Black’s AAU coach Eric “Cowboy” Robinson said Black was still considering Minnesota among the many schools interested in him, including Duke and Kansas. Black is on pace to graduate this spring, Robinson said. He could wait until that point to decide.

Buckles needs to take the required classes this summer and just transfer to Minnesota.

Makes sense Coach P. is looking to re-sign Alex Foster. That would make the blackhole at PF a little bit smaller. Oto and Foster sharing minutes is better than coming up empty.

If everything we have heard about Foster is true resigning him is probably the last thing on his mind. The reports I have been reading here and other places make it seem that Foster is no longer a major Division 1 prospect. I woud much rather go with a transfer for a year to help fill the void with Buggs.

Somehow I must have missed those reports. Coach P. and I are getting together at the Vu for the giant hot dog buffet shortly. Let me have the names of those transfers so I can share them with him.

You really need a list of the possible transfers who have been talked about on this site for nearly a month? Buckles and Black both of whom could come her for a year and help fill the void at PF without taking up a roster spot for a long period of time. If you have not been keeping up on Foster many reports have been out there that his game has dropped off and his future growth has tailed off. He was a highly ranked prospect at one time that is no longer thought of as a top level recruit. This season didnt help him either. He is probably a D-I player but I said maor D-I player.

Hey guys,

I haven't posted in awhile but I'm a Spartan that lives in Memphis. I have great respect for Minnesota and like your team/program, while I'm bummed to see Tubby go I understand why you guys had to make the change. That said I would really hate to see Black end up at Minnesota. He's a fouling machine and limited offensively. Living in Memphis I can tell you he is very self centered and does not have a very good reputation around here. Earlier this year he was upset at not being named a starter after losing the starting position and doing nothing really to get it back. As a result Black through a hissy fit and walked out on his team in practice.

When he announced he was transferring he called a press conference at his house where he was sitting with a life size mural of himself behind him. Immediately after the presser Black went to campus and walked around in his Memphis work out gear as though nothing had happened. Many local media asked his teammates if they thought the negative outcry would bother Black. Every single one said that Black just doesn't give a fk. One went as far as to say if coach was walking up to Black, Tarik would just walk right by him without saying a word.

He's a good athlete but he's incredibly foul prone and seems to be something of a cancer. I'd trust your coaches to make the right call and maybe getting out of Memphis is what he needs. But from what I've seen I'd hate to see that kind of attitude taint a team especially with a first year coach.

The fact Coach K is after him is enough for me to get on board. He doesn't go after "cancers."

True enough. I'm just telling you guys what I've seen/heard living in the area. Maybe other coaches (like coach K) think the kid just needs to get out of Memphis. But the local radio guys who have covered and known Black for many, many years have talked all year about how his entire attitude and approach has gone down hill from the start of the year. As I said I'm sure your new coach will do his homework and make sure of things. But from what I've seen/heard I'd hate to see him in the bigten period. Especially on the gophers. You guys have been one of, if not probably the only, fan base who hasn't acted like total asses to visitors like me who want to have non flaming conversations.

Thanks. You're the first guy to tell us we're not total asses in quite a while. I don't know whether to believe you or dismiss it as another cheap attempt to get me to take down my lifesize self-mural.

This makes no sense at all. We told him to kick rocks.

Do you know what you're talking about?

I appreciate the perspective. Like most fans, we don't want to think that anyone we want is anything but perfect. Kids don't often leave their senior year for a team that will be Top 10 nationally preseason (like Memphis will) unless there are some issues on both sides. No doubt there is risk.

Not sure what this means if anything >> Memphis board
"Jimmy Williams leaving the program " a coach of black's

http://csnbbs.com/showthread.php?tid=630285&page=3

University of Memphis assistant coach Jimmy Williams won’t be returning to the Tigers next season.

Williams, who coached the Tigers’ big men for the last season and a half, is leaving the program to pursue other opportunities, coach Josh Pastner said Friday.

LOL. Classic quote. Kris Humphries and Dan Monson would laugh at your statement.

Yeah, Coach K is desperate to find a good big man who wants tiny Wojo (former Dukie G famous for slapping the floor) to coach him. He had Mason Plumlee for four years and no legit backup plan it appears.

Instead of Kevin Bacon, Minnesota BBall is the six degrees of separation from Jimmy Williams!!!

Guessing he will go work with/for Tubby...

Teague likely would have approved Jimmy Williams +defined return for Royce White if he were here at the time, unlike his nervous predecessor

I have a theory that you can do a six degrees of Luke Recker with anyone in college basketball.

Maybe it would be less odd if we traded life-sized murals? Not endorsing, just saying.

Some of your commentary is reasonable, but there are some twisting of facts as well. The practice episode happened when he was still a starter. He had started every game. He never started again AFTER that day. That said the reason you gave for his "hissy fit" is inaccurate.

Gathering the press at his house was a bit odd, but there was no "life size mural of himself behind him". Off to the side there was a Memphis Tigers poster of him. In addition, he wore Memphis gear at the press conference. I believe it was his way of saying that he's appreciative of his time at Memphis and holds the program in high regard, but it's time for him to move on.

Black Watch:

From Duke/UNC website - battle pared to Duke MN & KU for Black. It mentions fallout between Pastner and Black.

http://www.bluevsblue.com/2013/4/22/4250300/blue-vs-blue-offseason-updates

Back to Duke - looks like Coach K is interested in Memphis graduate transfer Tarik Black. After initially listing 20 schools interested, the battle has pared down to Duke, Minnesota and Kansas. The guy is supposed to be great for the locker room despite his falling out with Josh Pastner this year. That said, for a big body, his rebounding rate doesn't really seem to push Duke in the direction it needs to go. But if K likes him, he's worth a year and a scholly if it's available. There really isn't much of a downside.

Need to get the Hollins bros on the case to close the deal, if they aren't already.
