Reid Travis Picks Stanford Over U

It'd be so much better if he came to Minnesota and became the next Trevor Mbakwe (for 4 years).

Kinda weird to think about, but technically Trevor was here for four years. But I get what you mean.

First time poster but have followed this board for a while to get good Gopher hoops updates. I wanted to talk about why Marcus said that Gonzaga might be a good fit because I'm a Zags fan as well who lived in Washington before and pretty familiar with the west coast hoops scene. With that said, I am hoping he lands with the Gophers along with Vaughn and others.

One of the things that is talked about with Travis is how much he values education and Gonzaga is a strong academic institution, with players like Kelly Olynyk recently being named as an Academic All-American as well as for hoops and I agree with MadTownGopher when he compared him to Elias Harris because I see a lot of similarities there as well. Another thing to consider that hasn't been talked about much is about is how Gonzaga compares to Minneapolis DeLaSalle. If he is looking for a college that is similar to his high school, I would say that Gonzaga might be quite comparable as they are both small Catholic institutions with strong academics and athletics. Again I don't know if it is important to him to attend a Catholic school and I'm not saying that Gonzaga is the favorite, but I do think they could seriously in the mix.

With Sam Dower graduating he could immediately step into a veteran starting lineup with Kevin Pangos, Gary Bell Jr., Gerard Coleman (very good Providence transfer), and Przemek Karnowski to form a really strong team. This article on Gonzaga's website lists Reid Travis as one of their top priorities for the 2014 class, along with Josh Perkins whom the Gophers had been linked to at one point in time.

I dont think reid or rashad get enough love on this board... we actually have a great shot at these 2 but everyone keeps talking about tyus the only one for sure not coming to the gophers.. he has said over and over and over he is playing with his buddy and that is not at the U

I'd disagree with your first point. Rashad has a 52 page thread about him, and Travis has a 17 page one. And I'm pretty sure you can blame the "Tyus is never coming to Minnesota" faction for about 50 of the pages on the Tyus thread.

The other two of the "big three" get plenty of love around here.

Yes plenty of love for all. No doubt way more posts on the Tyus thread, but a lot of garbage discussions on there too. Check it lately? The Tyus thread has an entire page about soccer.

I am hoping for Travis and Vaughn even more than Jones. Love all three but think we have a legitimate shot at the other two.

Reid struggled early on today against AOR. Great on the boards but was struggling to hit shots.

He was a great scorer the whole tournament until today.
Fortunately, his 18 rebounds made up for it!

That's crazy talk. Vaughn and Travis have been the main focus of most of the knowledgeable Gopher fan base for quite a while. Each have very long threads, including the very one you just posted on. It was a long weekend, were you by chance posting inebriated :) ?

For what it's worth Ryan James has always maintained that Reid will go to a school in a big city as he has the "bigger picture" in mind. He wants to play in an area where there a lot of opportunities after college. For that reason, Ryan has always thought that Stanford had an excellent shot at Reid if/when they do offer him. He also believes Minnesota has a great shot. I would think that Gonzaga (being located in Spokane) would be a tougher sell, even though it is a good school.

STrib: Catching up with 2014 'Big Three' recruit Reid Travis

Since Minnesota is basically in your backyard, does that discourage you from using one of your five on the U? No, there’s some stuff they can show you, but on an official visit, they can show you everything. So that’s the thing. I’ve been on an unofficial (there) I think like 10 times, so to be on an official, there are some ins and outs that you really can’t experience with an unofficial, so I kind of want to see all that. So I’ll definitely use one on the U.

I know you were close with former Gophers assistant Ron Jirsa – and in general, a coaching switch (with former coach Tubby Smith getting fired) is a big change. How did that affect you? It definitely changes the way you start to think about it because you grow a relationship with the old staff that they had, But I like the new staff now, so it really didn’t affect me too much. I like Ben Johnson, I like Pitino a lot. So it’s kind of changed a little bit, but I still have a strong relationship with them.

Does it feel like you are getting recruited by a new school? There is different personnel, a different system. Yeah, a little bit, but at the end of the day, I was always looking at the school aspect of it first with the business school and stuff like that, so it’s kind of just building new relationships, so probably like the fourth thing that I was looking for on the list, so it wasn’t too much of a change for me.

When did the new staff reach out to you? I think a day after [Pitino] was hired, my dad talked to him on the phone and I started to with Ben Johnson as soon as he got hired. So right away, they started picking up their recruiting.

And what has the contact been like since? It’s been strong. I talk to them at least two, three times a week, whenever they can get ahold of me, so we’re building a strong relationship and I’m really starting to like where it’s going.

Do you see differences in recruiting styles? Not too much. I think they’re all professionals and they all handle it the right way, the way they call you here and there.

Go Gophers!!

REALLY encouraging that Reid is going to use an official on us. Pretty sure Tyus ruled that possibility out very early in the process.

I'm fired up about our chances as well. Reid will be the cornerstone for our 2014 class. Tyus already talks about Minnesota like someone already playing out of state. I have yet to see any enthusiasm regarding the Gophers from him what so ever. And if Vaughn commits along with Travis and I will say Tyus who?

I like our chances at Reid and don't hate them on Vaughn. I wrote off Tyus over a year ago and everything that I've seen since then has confirmed that opinion. Reid and Rashad would make the foundation of a hell of a class though. I'm not convinced that Tyus will be more effective than Rashad in any case.

May have just been a typo, but Reid is in the class of 2014.

I'm sitting here drooling over Hollins, Vaughn, Travis, and Eliason all on the roster in 2014!

Now make it happen Reid and Rashad!!

I was drooling over having tyus and Coleman on that list too but oh well

From Gopher Illustrated today , looks like MSU is in the mix:

This winter when DeLaSalle was making their back to back state championship run Reid was offered by Michigan State and when the Islanders hoisted the championship trophy Tom Izzo was in attendance to see the moment.

"I like Michigan State a lot because of Coach Izzo. I've built a good relationship with him the last couple years and I'm interesting in getting on their campus and then we'll go from there."

MSU has always been one of the biggest players for him

Good stuff in here about Travis. His comments on academics seem to not bode well for Michigan State... As they aren't a bad school by any means, but not as good of an education such as Minnesota and others.

He speaks highly of the Gophers, and the last 6 or so sentences of the article carry some important weight.

Just curious, I understand if you are comparing MSU to Stanford but arent Minnesota and MSU somewhat similar academically? It would depend on the major . For example MSU has a top astrophysics major and one of the few cyclotron labs on campus.
I Am sure MInnesota excels in some other fields.

To think there is a sufficient difference to determine a recruit's decision...hmmm, I think that is a reach

Wouldn't that depend on the field?

Travis has specifically mentioned the U's business school in the past. I have no idea what MSU's business school is like, but Minnesota's is pretty high up there. I get your skepticism about a small difference in education influencing a recruit, but with Travis it seems to be different. He seems to really value education and is planning ahead for his future. Some think he'll favor a college in a bigger city with great education, which would put schools like Minnesota, Stanford, and Northwestern in the lead. No doubt Izzo is one of the best though, and I'm sure MSU will stay in the mix with Reid.

I see

MSU's bus school is ok, not super duper. I was a math major in grad school so
I cant speak for all other depts.

If we get Ulis and Alexander, I will be happy. Izzo has 4-5 openings and 2014 is a very good class.

ON another subject, what do you guys think of Pitino?

All of the Big Ten business schools are pretty much top notch with a few exceptional options. UMN undergrad doesn't really separate itself much if at all from MSU.

Stanford and Northwestern don't have business schools so if he wants to go to business school, Minn would be the best option. It is usually ranked about the 50th best program in the country. Boston College would be ranked higher. MSU isn't any good in business. In the Big 10 you Michigan is by far the best.
