Wow, Reid gave Pitino some huge praise. I was also impressed with how big he is for Junior. He'd be an incredible get for us.

Reid is the total package. Great athlete, big ten body and very smart.

per Shama:

I don’t know by how much, but the odds of the Gophers convincing DeLaSalle junior Reid Travis to attend Minnesota went up when Pitino hired former Islanders’ star Ben Johnson as an assistant coach.

I always thought we would get the neighborhood kid, even when Orlando was here. Big get which fills the blackhole at PF. Hope we can get an early commit. The Big 3 for the class of 2015 are much more Gopherlike and should start us on our way.

I have a feeling we get Travis and Vaughn and Pitino goes out east to find a PG and a big man who can run. Either that or he has McNeil at the point and then we go after Jarvis Johnson the next year.

I was going to call you crazy, but after watching that video it sounds like Travis is truly interested in the Gophers and Pitino. Two months ago I was 100% sure Travis was not coming here. Now though...who knows. The Vaughn interview was really positive as well. This could be a legitimate result.

I hope McNeil can hold down the fort until Johnson arrives, but he'll need somekind of help. McNeil is a good get! I haven't watched that much, but Johnson looks like a very special player. I would have offered after the first 30 seconds of the tape I saw.

The kid is huge. I saw him in person last week at a dunk contest between exhibition games at De, and his size jumped out at me. The first thing I noticed is that his maroon and gold Nike's looked to be the size of waterskis. My medical friend there at the same time suggested that he may not be done growing with such disproportionate sized feet. I think they list him at 6-6/7, and he may have room to grow. He will be an impact player at high D-1 level. I do hope it is here, and he brings Johnson with him. That young man could really leap and looked to have a lot of skills at the same time.

I doubt McNeil starts from day one, we can bring a PG in 2014 and when Dre graduates bring Johnson is, can't have enough good ball handlers

@darrenwolfson: Reid Travis: a man in demand. Told football coaches from ISU/Pitt./#Gophers are in this week. Hoops: Buzz Williams in yest., Bo Ryan today.

Go Gophers!!

Is this the first we've heard of Bo Ryan trying to get him? I can't see him going to Wisconsin at all.

I could definitely see Reid going to UW. His emphasis on academics has already been mentioned, and UW is a very good school, and I think his skill set as a versatile forward who can play inside and outside fits into how UW likes to use their bigs. I would love to see him pick UW, he could be a very nice forward combination with UW's other 2014 commit (Ethan Happ).

That said, I think it's pretty unlikely that he ends up in Madison. UW was involved early on, but I can't say I've heard them mentioned with Reid in some time now.

This has already been covered, UW is the same as the rest of the Big 10 (more or less). It's not an elite school, if he wants to go to an elite school, he'll be picking a school like NWestern.

In some ways, he makes sense in WI with his style, except he makes sense everywhere for that style. Who wouldn't want a PF who is athletic and strong enough to play inside and skilled enough to play a bit on the outside? He fits every school.

Where WI might struggle in recruiting him is that he really excels getting up and down the court. He is such a good athlete it would seem like a bit of a waste to play such a slower paced system.

WI is a good program though, so we'll see.

STrib: After splitting up, state's Big 3 prep basketball players to meet on AAU stage Saturday

“I feel like he would have been just fine,” Jones said. “But there is no controversy. It’s the best situation for him.”

Fans will get to see the trio play on the same court for the first time Saturday in the Nike circuit’s second session in Hampton, Va. Playground Elite and Howard Pulley are scheduled to play at 10 a.m. CDT.

“I want it to be exciting. It’s Reid, Tyus and me, the Big Three. Everyone is going to amp it up,” Vaughn said.

The Howard Pulley Panthers AAU squad went 5-0 this weekend at the Nike Elite Youth Basketball tournament in Hampton, Va. Apple Valley’s Tyus Jones and DeLaSalle’s Reid Travis continued their dominant play. Jones averaged 23.8 points on 51 percent shooting from the field and 5.3 assists. Travis averaged 18.8 points on 50 percent shooting and 8.2 rebounds, including a 34-point game on 11-for-17 shooting in their 85-75 victory Sunday over Nike Team Louisiana.

Q&A: Reid Travis: I like Coach Pitino a lot...Ben Johnson is like a legend at our HS

Reid Travis: I like Coach Pitino a lot...Ben Johnson is like a legend at our high school.

Reid Travis, a 6-foot-7 junior forward from Minneapolis DeLaSalle, led the Islanders to their second straight Class AAA state title last month and was named the Star Tribune Metro Player of the Year.

GopherHole.com caught up with Travis to learn the latest on the new Minnesota head coach and his recruitment.

Gopher Hole: What was it like playing against kids that you maybe never seen or had just heard their names because you had played more adidas events in the past? Was it kind of fun to see some new players as opposed to seeing some of the same old guys you see all the time?

Reid Travis: It was nice. You see these people on the websites. You see them on YouTube and stuff like that, so it was nice to put myself up against them and see how I can compete against them and really try to work on my game against the best and I think that is what it is all about.

Gopher Hole: Did you see much of a difference between the adidas and the EYBL kids?

Reid Travis: They are both high level of competition. EYBL, I think, is just a little bit more structure with the kids that they’ve got and every game, day in and day out, you know is going to be a battle. That is really the only difference that I could see.

Gopher Hole: Any new offers lately?

Reid Travis: No, no. Just the coaching change at Northwestern. They just re-offered. Nothing really too much right now. Kind of just feeling out the schools that I already have offers from and just getting to know them better.

Gopher Hole: Have you had many schools come by for school or home visits lately?

Reid Travis: I haven’t had any home visits yet. I have been mostly meeting at the school. There have been quite a few basketball schools coming in, pretty much half of the Big Ten stopped in the last two weeks and some football schools are coming in, lately too.

Gopher Hole: Who are some of the schools that stopped in for basketball?

Reid Travis: Wisconsin. Minnesota stopped in. Nebraska. Michigan State. Those are just a few that stopped in.

Gopher Hole: How about for football?

Reid Travis: Pittsburgh stopped in today and I am supposed to meet with Ohio State and Vanderbilt next week.

Gopher Hole: Do you still have the three football offers, then?

Reid Travis: Yes. Those are still standing.

Gopher Hole: Have you made any plans to go to any football things? I know that it is hard with AAU basketball and all the spring football games being held at the same time.

Reid Travis: I am trying to get down to the Nike’s camp in Chicago in mid-June or something like that. Trying to just put my name out a little more on the football circuit.

Gopher Hole: What has been your impressions of the new coaching staff at the University of Minnesota?

Reid Travis: It has been great. I like Coach Pitino a lot. Just his enthusiasm for the game and how he has treated me so far. I am just excited to start the recruiting process with him.

Gopher Hole: Has that changed your interest level in maybe staying at Minnesota?

Reid Travis: It hasn’t changed it. I have always looked at Minnesota as a school first. It is just twisted up a little bit, now that there are new coaches, but I am just interested and they are highly on my list.

Gopher Hole: They have Ben Johnson now as an assistant, who played at DeLaSalle. Is that another thing that maybe makes you more interested in Minnesota?

Reid Travis: Yes, it is interesting. I have seen Johnson pretty much my whole life throughout DeLaSalle. He is like a legend at our high school. It is nice to see him take the Minnesota job. It was nice to see that.

Have you noticed that the theme in all these interviews is Coach P's enthusiasm and his respect for these kids. It's nice to see.

@gopherhole: A long time Minnesota AAU coach told us today that "5 weeks ago the #Gophers had no shot at the Big 3, now any combination is possible."

Go Gophers!!

and UW is elite academically.

Good one.

Ken Lien ‏@mrbasketballmn 17h Why? Because that's his 'dream' college if choice. @mauerhof: @mrbasketballmn Why do you say that? Not that I would blame him one bit.

Email Tweet Embed Tweet Ken Lien ‏@mrbasketballmn 18h I'm not a betting man, but if Duke offered DeLaSalle's Reid Travis, he'd be gone in a heartbeat!

Reid is obviously a talented football player as well, is there any chance he would choose football over basketball? Looking down the road at a possible professional career, at 6'7" he would be an undersized PF in the NBA, and his upside would be limited. With his size and athleticism, good coaching could turn him into a big time NFL prospect if he chose to play football.

Looking at the health concerns of playing big time football I would think basketball is a better choice. If not the NBA i would think he would make some good money playing basketball. That plus the fact he is a great student he could get his degree and have that to fall back on as well. Four years playing for the Gophers sounds like great plan to me. lol

It's my humble opinion that Reid Travis becoming a gopher would have the largest impact on the state of the program of the big 3. Of all 3, Reid seems the most likely to stay until graduation and the presence of a four year star could be invaluable. Having said that, I want all 3 to be gophers with Reid and Rashad being the more likely possibilities. But if I had to pick one, and only one, I'd take Reid.

per Sid:

Reid Travis, the outstanding DeLaSalle football and basketball player, is getting visits from coaches in both sports, according to GopherHole.com. Wisconsin, Minnesota, Nebraska and Michigan State have had basketball representatives talk to Travis. And in football, Pittsburgh is recruiting him as well as Ohio State and Vanderbilt.

Ames Tribune: Catching up with Reid Travis and Jarvis Johnson

Travis is a top-50 player in his class nationally and sports offers from dozens of schools, including Arizona, Minnesota, Michigan State and ISU.

“I’m kind of wide open with everything,” Travis said. “I still want to take some visits a couple places, take some officials and probably know by the fall where I want to go.”

Travis mentioned ISU, Stanford, Gonzaga, Michigan State and Northwestern as possible visit destinations.

“A lot of them I’m trying to,” he said, "but (there’s) not enough time.”
