Pam Borton Fired UPDATED 4/7: VCU's Marlene Stollings HIRED!

Dawn Staley played in the WNBA from 1999 to 2006. She was the women's head coach at Temple from 2000 to 2008, when she left to become the head coach at South Carolina. So, it's not unprecedented, and the seasons don't overlap.

Right now, I think Lindsay likes playing in Europe. She makes enough now not to have to play in the winter, but she chooses to play.

Not accurate. Staley was simultaneously a WNBA player and college coach from 2000-2006.

True - after being the Temple coach for 6 seasons. Like Whalen, she had zero coaching experience prior to being hired as Temple's head coach.

In fact, they're virtually identical. Both are/were elite WNBA players and Olympic athletes. Both play/ed the most cerebral position, point guard. Staley was 29 when hired at Temple, and Whalen is 31 now.

Damn, should have read the whole article. Touche. Will point out the Temple job back then and Gopher job now aren't exactly equal as far as expectations.

You can cross Tyler Summitt off of your list. He just took the job at La Tech.

Sad to say, but in women's basketball, that's probably at least equal to MN.

La Tech has won 3 National Championships and has competed in 13 Final Fours, 23 Sweet Sixteens, and 27 NCAA tournaments.

Yeah, but they're only number 2 all time in Division 1 Women's basketball in victories.

Whalen is 31 years old. No major injuries. What many of you forget is. SHE STILL LOVES TO PLAY!!!!!. Period. End of
story.

Go Gophers!!

Ivey looks good to me.:)

Is the source Sid? We all know how that goes.

I feel like Johnston is an obvious fit. Probably means it won't be him.

Per StarTribune, 3 favorites have emerged for the job..

- Jody Adams, Wichita State head coach -- won national title in 1991 as Tennessee PG
- Aaron Johnston, South Dakota State head coach
- Niele Ivey, Notre Dame assistant coach -- won national title in 2001 as Irish PG

I absolutely love Adams and Johnston. Either would be too good to be true. Don't know much about Ivey, so I can't comment, but she might be an excellent candidate, too. Things might just be looking up.

Adams was a Littlejohn assistant. Got a reprimand for making her players do pushups during half-time of a game. No thanks. Johnston is the safer bet, but Ivey comes out of a pretty successful program and the Notre Dame coach is very good. Seems to fit Norwood's pattern.

Who's been a part of the villa summits?

Johnston is a great coach. He has been putting SDSU on the map for years with marginal talent. Give him the oppotunity with above average players and he will get the most out of that team. Hope they give him a shot!

I'd be fine with Johnston or Ivey, Johnston is a MN native and has the head coaching experience and Ivey doesn't have the head coaching experience but has been recruiting coordinator at a great program and played 5 years in the WNBA which you would think would help with recruiting.

23 year old Tyler Summitt to Louisiana Tech as head coach. Used to be one of the elite programs in the entire country. 1997-2001 had four Elite Eights, two Final Fours and one runner up.

Former WNBA and La. Tech superstar Teresa Witherspoon drove them into the ground.

AJ is a great coach. But winning with a lot of Minnesota players that Pam Borton didn't recruit doesn't make them marginal talent. That marginal talent beat the Gophers three consecutive times including twice at Williams Arena.
