Go Gophers!!

Not that you were saying we weren't...but just wanted to say Minnesota is a great academic institution as well. By some measures better than Duke.

Yep, certainly didn't mean it to sound like Minnesota isn't a great school.

Lucas definitely still had an offer, he was and has been the top DE target for a long time. Lucas has also been a Duke lean for a while now and despite a great visit to Minnesota last weekend I don't think the staff was surprised to see him commit elsewhere. Will be interesting to see what our DL recruiting looks like for the rest of this class as really the only known top target is Amir Watts.

Yeah I was just guessing. Doesn't seem like we have a lot of open spots left and are still potentially looking for another QB, a RB, TE, and DT.

By my count, they are up to 20 commits. That leaves 3-5 to go, unless they get some transfers. There are still in the running for some pretty good guys too.

Kris Weatherspoon - DB - JUCO - Troy commit
Elijah Battle - DB - JUCO - West Virginia commit
Amir Watts - DT
Lloyd Cushenberry - OG - South Carolina commit
Chase Allen - TE
Trystan Castillo - OL - Missouri commit
Arkeem Byrd - RB
Keon Howard - QB

I wonder if we will take both Juco DB now?

Let's keep it going.

I am announcing my commitment to the University of Minnesota tailgating lots.

Thanks for posting your thoughts. To view him as overrated by watching one game on TV is probably a bit over the top tho.

He's rated 300 on the 247 composite and I wouldn't argue with that so disagreeing with one service for rating him very high hardly equates to thinking he's overrated. It's true I've only seen him play in one game, but I've also watched highlights on MaxPreps and Hudl. From what I've seen, Snelson is a steady, sure-handed, possession receiver and a physical blocker. In my mind, a top 100 recruit is a dynamic playmaker and I don't see that in Snelson. Feel free to enlighten me if you know something I don't.

It should be noted that with Saturday's win, Snelson became the first player in Florida high school football to play for four state champion teams (1 at Booker Washington High, 2 at American Heritage and 1 at Charles Flanagan). Nice accomplishment for the young man.

I have no idea if he will outperform your expectations. You may be spot on. I do know, however, that saying someone isn't as good as they are rated is saying they are overrated.

If I said he's much better than the Scout and 247 site ranking, would that have made you happier?

Go Gophers!!

per Sid:

• The Gophers are in better shape after getting a commitment from Seth Green, the former East Ridge QB, than they would have been with decommitted QB recruit Tony Poljan of Lansing, Mich., who no one else was recruiting as a quarterback. Green had previously committed to Oregon and is a 10-pin strike for the Gophers. Claeys and his staff also landed a great recruit in Antoine Winfield Jr., the son of former Viking Antoine Winfield and a defensive back out of The Woodlands, Texas, who had offers from Missouri, Purdue, Northwestern and SMU.

Go Gophers!!

our coaching staff should be embarrassed losing kids to duke

Duke was in the ACC title game two years ago, they've spent parts of the last three or four years in the top 25. Their coach was Peytin's OC at Tennessee and Eli's coach at Ole Miss.

Allen High School had won 57 consecutive games and three straight Texas 6A state titles before falling to Westlake in last Friday's semifinals. Allen coach Tom Westerberg was back in the office Monday and answered some questions about Seth Green, the former East Ridge quarterback who committed to Minnesota on Sunday. Here's a condensed version of the interview:

Q. What was the scouting report on Seth when he first got to Allen?

A. "I didn’t know anything about him until he moved in. His dad’s job transferred down in this direction, and they picked Allen High School. I think his dad’s job is in the metroplex of the Dallas area. So he picked Allen to move to. I didn’t do a whole lot of background scouting or anything. I kind of looked at his Hudl highlight tape deal, and they kind of run a little different offense where he was than what we do. Then it was just a matter of how well he fit into what we did.

Q. What led to the platoon system at quarterback?

A. "We run a little bit of a spread offense, and an up-tempo offense, and Mitchell Jonke had played in it for a year. So he’d been in a system like that, kind of knew it a little better than Seth at the time. And Mitchell was the starting quarterback coming out of the spring. Seth ended up taking over as a starting quarterback. He was first team all district, so he probably started eight of our 15 games, and then Mitchell kind of got hot in the playoffs. But Seth came into some big games and did some good things for us."

Q. What's your sense of how he feels about coming back to Minnesota for college?

A. "I think he’s pretty excited about it. He was committed to Oregon when he first got here, and [offensive coordinator Scott] Frost left, and they got another commitment in, and so I don’t know where all that went to. But then I talked to [Green] a little bit when he was going to look elsewhere, and it just happened to be that Minnesota was also looking for a quarterback, too. So it kind of fit just perfect, and he has a great relationship with all the coaches up there.

Q. How would you rate his work ethic and ability to check his ego at the door?

A. "He’s second to none. He did a great job. I mean, studies the game well and had to study it quite a bit to pick everything up that we’re doing and knowing that he’s going to have to do that at the next level too. As far as working and studying the game, and as far as working out, he’s second to none. He’ll win every spring practice, and he’s awesome in the weight room and is a good leader that way, leading by example of being out front. So I think they’re getting a great one."

Sounds like the class will end up with 25-28 in it. Possibilities are:
QB-Howard-0-1
RB-Byrd, Daniels, McCrary-1
TE-Allen-1
OL-Castillo, Cushenberry-1-2
DL-Watts, Epting, JUCO?-2-3
LB-Pine-0-1
DB-Battle, Weatherspoon-1-2

I've heard rumors that the gophers might try to make a push for 4* receiver Desmond Fitzpatrick. Might have an OV before signing day.

I have not heard of him but I love it when we steal guys from NDSU
High school QB/LB, sounds like Kill really liked him in camp last summer.

Hmm Michigan kid with an offer from UM but it doesn't look like they're in the mix. No longer commitable or for DB maybe?

It does look like he has better offers. My only thought is they must be drying up and we'd still want him at WR.
