Does anyone think the loss of Ragnow hurts us with Jones??

No. The OL is gonna more than adequate without Ragnow. This whole recruit B isn't going to come here because recruit A went elsewhere is wrong 90% of the time. Only usually applies when the recruits are very close. By all accounts, Ragnow and Jones are not.

Well that is great to hear and I hope u r correct. Don't get me wrong, I would have loved to have nabbed Ragnow, but to be honest it was more for how it would help our recruiting ranking than how it would help the team. We r pretty strong on the o-line as it is. That tender would be better spent on a receiver or in the secondary.

South Carolina has a 4 page thread about Gibson, sometimes you never realize how good a player you have until someone else snags him from you.

http://www.cockytalk.com/showthread.php?t=203679

It's an interesting phenomenon on this board, and probably everywhere. People aren't that excited about a kid because he is only a
2-star recruit and doesn't have great offers. Then he gets a good offer, and no one wants to lose him.

What gives you the impression that people aren't that excited about him?

Let me clarify further, I'm not claiming to have an inside info. I'm only saying Jones is making a decision completely independent of anyone else.

Not Gibson in particular, recruits in general. If Gibson had a few SEC offers, people would be a lot more excited. That's generally the case for all players.

Jeff has said that he wants to be the first great MN player to stay home when he sees so many going out of state. i guess Jeff can still be the first with Ragnow leaving…seriously though i wouldn't worry too much about it

Campbell and James are really important to this class. If we get a signing day surprise, I hope it's a DB. Or a LB.

exactly how i felt. I really wanted him more just to bolster our recruiting ranking then i did to help with the teams success. It would have been nice to say we have a top 40 class and be in the same category as Iowa and Nebraska. It does't mean anything in the long run but it is a pride thing. just like ranking a team in the top 25. I knew that if he turns out to be an all big ten player or even all american it wouldn't have helped the team nearly as much as Jeff Jones. if we had 5 O-lineman of Ragnow's caliber then that is a different story but one O-lineman is not the same as one RB or one QB, 5 is but Ragnow can't play 5 positions at once. For Jeff i don't really care about how much it helps our class ranking. All i care about is him winning us game in the future.

Why is that at all surprising? Most people here aren't professional analysts, so the collective opinion of division 1 college coaches is held in high esteem, as it should be. Also, if you read that thread, half the posts are people saying things like "he's from Alabama and doesn't have any SEC offers, why should we offer him?"It's a collective phenomenon, right or wrong.

In this case, however, should Jerry decide to go, this is at least a loss we can stomach, given our depth at TE.

Burns has said that he really doesn't think their will be any surprises. Campbell, James and Conor K are really the only ones right now that we are looking at. And all 3 of them appear to be locks or at least an 80% chance. I guess Gaskin would be somewhat a surprise (DB) but overall it sounds like there aren't going to be any Donovahn Jones's or Devondre Cambpell's.

if Gibson truly does run a 4.5 forty according to rivals then i would be pretty excited to have him and it would sting if SC nagged him from us. If he truly runs a 4.8 forty which is what 247 says then i wouldn't lose too much sleep losing him since we still have Elmore and Lingen and Wozniak and Williams. I think in a few year we will have the best stable of TEs in the conference

Of course the opinion of college coaches and whether they extend an offer is valuable. I'm pointing out how fans opinions can swing wildly after 1 offer. Gibson's position versatility is a valuable asset. Sure we could handle it, but it would be a loss.

It's called a surprise because it's unexpected. No one thought Devondre was coming here, until he signed.

I'm curious about Cortez Lewis. I know Kemp is supposedly firm to Wake now, but I haven't heard anything about Lewis in a long while. Maybe he could be a surprise? I know the staff probably wouldn't have planned to take four receivers (assuming we get CK - hopefully), but at this point, our class seems balanced enough that we take the best player available, and we certainly need playmakers.

yeah, i'm not saying he will never ever start and will be god awful but i don't see him being anything better then an average O-lineman in the big ten while i do feel Rasmussen and Gentry do have the potential to be all conference players, not that they will be but it could possibly happen.

There are not going to be any "average O-linemen in the big ten" starting for the Gophers. I expect Weyler will be starting at guard on the OL during his career.

I get the impression Lewis and Kemp are a package deal.

again if anybody cares Dimonic Mckinzy is ranked as the 17th DT QB while on ESPN the #17 DT is a 4 star

Nilijah Ballew would be a surprise for most people, I think, especially because he hasn't even visited here (which Campbell and Jones had, I believe). His recruitment is definitely back open, though it appears he's leaning towards Indiana.

I agree on Ballew. He was Louisville's #1 recruit before de-commiting. He reached out to the Gophers. He replaces Blasingame and beyond. Offer!

So far, how many MN HS athletes who had a press conference to announce their college choices have gone to out of state schools? Beginning to wonder if it is a bad omen meaning the home state Gophers are out of the running.

I hope this is not true of Jeff Jones. Losing him will be tougher to swallow than the loss of Ragnow...

In the last 8 years, their have been 15 "Tight Ends" to record a 40 yard dash under 4.60 at the NFL combine. This is after ~ 2 months of training specifically for the combine, meaning many of these guys won't run a time 40 that fast again. Further of those 15 guys, 6 of them are "move" guys or H-Back/Full back types that would not be effective in-line blockers. If Gibson runs a legit 4.80 at 247lbs as a high school senior, it's entirely possible that you are looking at a guy who runs a 4.65 at 260 at the NFL combine in 4-5 years.

Lewis firmed up his commitment before Kemp did…so they weren't a package. They also considered some schools that weren't on both of their lists.

Gibson weighs somewhere between 205 and 215. 247 is the website that lists his 40 time as 4.8. I've read that 4.8 is outdated and he has in fact ran run 4.6 numerous times but who knows.

No. Jones is a lock guys. IA St. hasn't been in contact with him for a while from what I hear. He will commit here and I couldn't be happier about it. Great fit both ways. Good kid. Good Gopher!

Christian Campbell. Must have been when we were down 19-9

Haha Campbell looks bored out of his mind.

per Sid:

• The Gophers are expected to announce the names of six preferred walk-ons Wednesday when the names of the 2014 scholarship players are announced: Apple Valley defensive back Davis Anderson; Butler County (Kan.) Community College fullbacks Miles Thomas and Riley Ohafah; Perham long snapper Payton Jordahl; Roseville quarterback Jacques Perra; kicker Emmit Carpenter of Ashwaubenon (Wis.); and Brainerd punter Logan McElfresh.
