STrib: Chanhassen's Ragnow keeps the recruiters guessing

“It’s always been my dream to play Division I football and play in the NFL, but I never envisioned this,” he said. “It will be a big relief when it’s over so I can focus on being the best college football player I can be.”

STrib: This year's class

BRANDON LINGEN

Wayzata • TE • 6-5, 240

College choice: Minnesota

There was little for Lingen to mull over when the University of Minnesota called.

A physical player with surprising speed and better-than-average hands, Lingen had offers from North Dakota State, Air Force and Florida Atlantic when the Gophers made their pitch. “Once they offered, I knew where I wanted to go,” he said.

After impressing coaches over the summer, Lingen knew the Gophers were interested. And with three former Wayzata teammates — tackle Ben Lauer, linebacker Chris Wipson and receiver Jeff Borchardt — on the roster, he knew what to expect. But the offer didn’t come until midway through the season, just late enough to keep him guessing.

“I wasn’t expecting the offer when it came,” he said. “It was an awesome surprise.”

FWIW, I think the one hang ups for the U with WR recruiting is that we haven't passed the ball much and that we do NOT have an established QB. IMO, that is probably the BIGGEST concern for a guy like Holland Jr. which is father alluded to me over twitter.

My arguments were:

1. Over the last few years our leading WR's were both WO's, just think what our staff could do with you (high end talent). Nothing against WO's but Melvin is a STUD!
2. We played two True FR last year so inexperience played a part.
3. We will have to take our shots down the field like any other team in the country because we cannot afford to be 1 dimensional and with more talent we can throw it more.

Any other on the field arguments we could make?

It was inevitable that we'd see another DB or two pop up this week as new targets. I'm sure we'll try and talk Gaskin into visiting this weekend.

I think it's simple. The Gophers just don't have the skill at the position to pass the ball more. An increase in skill, an increase in passing plays. I believe I read somewhere that even Limeyrover said the Gophers were too run heavy this year.

Awesome PWO Class adds P Logan McElfresh to the following six. I don't recall last year having so many this early…am I wrong?
QB Jaques Perra
FBs Miles Thomas and Riley Oharah (already enrolled)
LS Payton Jordahl
S Davis Anderson
K Emmit Carpenter

Pretty nice looking W/O class, at least a few of these kids are going to be starters down the road. Always good to add quality specialists to the mix (K, P, LS).

I am bothered by the lack of WR commitments so far. We've got 10 days counting today and nada commitments. Did Nelson leaving hurt the recruiting? I am sure the competition gladly use this as a negative recruiting tool.

All we need is two of Lenius, Holland, Gentry (am I missing someone?). The run heavy scheme last season and the lack of receiving production have to be massaged so that we are not going to be stigmatized as a run only team.

As I mentioned earlier in this thread, one of the main knocks/concerns from recruits and their parents is that we did not pass the ball much or effectively last year especially to WR's.

I think it's a combination of the staff being picky and WR recruits being a little skeptical. To be honest, if I was a WR I'd be a little hesitant to want to play here. We ran the ball 70% of the time last year and our QB play was erratic at best. The coaching staff can sell immediate playing time and the "potential" of our passing game and QB's but that will only take you so far.

FWIW, Isaiah Gentry will probably be deciding very soon and coach Kill and coach Anderson are visiting Holland's home tonight. I'm confident we'll get 2 of Holland, Lenius, and Gentry.

The coaching staff knows that we have to pass the ball more. You can't win consistently being a 1 dimensional team against good competition and believe me they know that. But, they need the tools to do so. We need elite talent and play making ability on the edge to be able to diversify the offense.

You guys, can you imagine if we land Jones to already good running game and pair that with some speed and physicality on the edge in Holland. Shoot, they stack the box and you leave a kid like Melvin matched up 1 on 1 with a corner and it's good night!

We have Wolitarsky, Jones and Carter from last year. They are going to be a solid group with more experience. Our O-line is all returning…including an all-american freshman…and we are adding an all-american in Connor Mayes. Can't help but think the quarterback will have more time to make better passes. With a better O-line, better running (we didn't discover Cobb until a ways into the season…and we are going to add Edwards and probably Jeff Jones)…I am not really all that worried. Our WRs were creating space by the end of the year. We may not have Nelson, but Leidner is certainly more experienced as a RS soph and Strevler, Conway and Rhoda coming off red shirt years and Dexter Foreman being a junior and McKinzey and Perra coming on board…certainly it would be better to have Nelson, but we also got rid of quarterback controversy..and it is easy to see that Leidner likes the run, run system. It is hard to see how this offense doesn't improve whether or not we get the 2 WRs we are hoping for.
