The fact he hasn't committed to fsu yet can only be a good sign but he's obviously enamored with them, and who can blame him? It will come down to what he wants most. He seems to be going back and forth between a) staying home and being a hometown hero with a real but small to middling (realistically) chance of playing in prestige bowls or b) dumping us for the hot chick with the plus 2s.

He probably realizes he'll certainly get a lot of press here, receive a lot of fan love and be a big-time, multi-year starter whereas chances are fair he might just be a guy down at fsu and may sit for the next many years. Again, depends what he wants. Maybe he'll start for fsu, maybe not. Not a revelation I know.

Some kids just want to get away from home. Some really need to be close to their families. We don't know.

He may just have a hard time saying no to limegrover/kill.

What I do know is our chances of landing highly starred players like ragnow will go up after several more above average seasons. If we don't get him the sun will still rise, the earth will still turn, brad bielema (that made me snort-intentional?) will still be an a-hole.

That is all.

Having lived in Panama City Beach and spent plenty of time in Tallahassee for work, I can say without equivocation that the school is a blast, the town is one part trailer park and two parts dumpster. There just isn't anything to do there and the education is second rate at best. Yes they are the current darlings of the NCAA, but if you are looking for quality of life and a job after school if the NFL doesn't work out...FSU is not the place to go.

A degree from FSU is similar to an AA from Anoka Ramsey CC.

Had to look them up for how bad they really rank. My favorite stat for them, ranked 605th out of 711 in research dollars from business. Not much going on down there.

They don't call it the armpit of Florida just because of its geography.

You can tell that Ragow likes the Gophers

GopherHole Q&A: Frank Ragnow on Gophers: "I like them a lot." Updates Recruiting, Talks Twitter & More

http://www.gopherhole.com/news_article/show/322196?referrer_id=388419

It comes through a lot that Frank likes the Gophers and coach Limegrover and coach Kill. I think he knows these coaches will be there or him all four years if he picks the Gophers and Minnesota is startng to build something special here. Coach Fischer from FSU wasn't even around for his visit and the Brew most likely wil not be either.
A Coach like Fischer is going to cash in on an NFL job if they do well in the title game. It is a good thing he got
along well with Maxx Williams and Mitch Leidner it can only help us that he has an "in" with those guys.

Sometimes the girlfriend you know who is just as loyal can be just as good looking as the strange unknown sexy one with the DD's.
I like our chances that Mr. Ragnow picks the Gophers in the end. Hopefully coach Kill and Limegrover can sell him on being a Gopher
Hopefully Jeff Jones get's that too, he get's a chance to wear # 21 and be like Barber and Maroney and possibly Cobb if he keeps improving. These two guys have a chance to make history at Minnesota and be amongst the leaders of Minnesota kids who brought prestige and pride back to the whole State, turning the tide on the best leaving Minnesota like Haggeman, Nelson and Leidner are doing now.

I am far more concerned with him going to Wisconsin...that would seem to be a better fit for him that FSU based on what he says is important. I would cry if that happened.

Josh Black a 3-Star OLB from Florida set a Jan. 24th visit to Minnesota. He has 10 offers, including ones from South Florida, Arizona, Bowling Green and Iowa St.

The Gophers also have a solid bunch of PWO's taking officials in January. Hopefully this will get us another great PWO class.

I am sure a couple of recruits are going to wait until after the bowl game to see how the Gophers do in this situation, being favored, but not by a huge margin.

It's hard for me to imagine a player like Ragnow or Jeff Jones watching today's game and thinking, "Boy, that's a program I want to play for."

Or they could be thinking "Boy, that's a program I want to play for because I have a good shot of playing early on."

There is two ways of looking at it.

Unfortunately, not many recruits look at it that way. There's a reason good teams stay good and some teams stay in the basement: People want to play for winners. We're not there yet.

Were you or have you ever been recruited to play major college football?

I think you're wrong, but whatever. No way of proving it either way.

Sure there is. Look at where the 4 and 5 star recruits go. These are the kids who get to pick their program, and very few pick programs without a history of winning recently, even though they'll have to sit for 2-3 years. For example, the one four star prospect from Minnesota who has made his decision is headed to Alabama, where he'll redshirt and then spend the majority of following two years on the bench.

MN Daily: Gophers RB recruit Herrod could follow in Cobb's footsteps
J'Vonte Herrod will make his college decision next month.

Cobb grew up in Killeen, Texas and has spoken with Herrod about playing in Minnesota after growing up in the south.

“[Cobb] basically says the running backs are taken care of,” Herrod said. “Coach [Brian] Anderson trusts them, they get the ball a lot.”

Herrod noted the similarities between he and Cobb and thinks he will have a similar impact as a surprise player.

“If I get the ball enough, with an offensive line like [the Gophers], I could probably get 1,000 yards in eight games,” Herrod said.

He hasn’t made up his mind yet, but Minnesota has definitely made an impression on Herrod. He’ll be watching Friday’s bowl game intently, rooting on the Gophers’ running back.

“I’m looking for my Gophers to win tonight,” Herrod said.

I guess we just have a different definition of "very few" and "not many". The #2 ranked 2014 class on rivals right now is Tennessee. They haven't gone to a bowl game since 2010. They have two 5* and 15 4* commits right now. Kentucky has nine 4* recruits. They just won two games and haven't gone to a bowl game since 2010 as well. NC State has one 5* and two 4* recruits after not winning a single conference game this season.

There are 28 5* recruits on rivals for 2014. 19 of those have announced a commitment. Two are going to Virginia, two are going to Tennessee, one North Carolina, and one NC State.

I was never arguing that just as many pick playing time over program success. I just think kids pick places where they think they can play earlier more often than you are stating.

Well then. . .maybe I should look into those recruits more. :) Thanks for your insight!

Wins and losses are incredibly overrated in terms of their immediate impact on recruiting. They only really matter if they appear to be putting a coach's job in jeopardy, or if they begin to erode the overall support of the program.
