Official 2014 Recruiting Updates Thread: Links, Tweets, Videos, Stories, Rumors, etc.

For the school a chance that you connect in a way that sways the kid to your school. DeVondre Campbell was committed elsewhere and came here instead.

Kids take visits to other schools while they are committed all of the time. D. Jones & D. Campbell are both examples of that last year.

With JC Jackson, he could be coming up here to learn more about Minny, immediate playing time, not getting lost in the shuffle at FL etc... Plus if your Kill and company you can't win the lottery unless you buy a ticket, so anytime you have the opportunity to get highly rated kids on campus you take them.

Another positive of bringing a kid like Jackson to visit, even if there's only a slim to none chance at flipping him, is that he can go home to his talent-rich high school in Florida and talk about how fun the visit to Minnesota was.

From the rivals front page it appears, not surprisingly, that D'Ernest Johnson (along with the other visitors), had a great time on his visit. Hope we get one of these RB's committed along with Jones.

Occasionally I'll try to look up how these kids are doing in their high school games, and it looks like, pending an appeal, Johnson has been suspended for 6 games after getting ejected last week for fighting. The coach says the tape doesn't show any punches from Johnson, but he was getting kicked and kneed in the head. If that's the case I'd be surprised if he didn't throw a punch.....if he didn't he has much more restraint than I do.

According to Kyle Goblirsch on 247 he won his appeal and the suspension was reduced to 1 game.

Go Gophers!!

To quote coach Kill, "They're paper tigers".

It's hard to buy in to these national rankings before the players have even showed up their college of choice. Many of them still have years of work to put in before seeing the field, not to mention staying eligible. I trust in our staff. We may not be getting Alabama-like talent, but kids who have SEC offers are still keeping us in their top 10 possibile choices--we're doing something right.

From 6 to 1?? That seems ridiculous, and makes you wonder the logic of the initial 6 games in the first place.

So is there any chance we can both get D'ernest and the CB that visited with him?? That would be pretty awesome!

Any realistic chance? No. We're not flipping a Gator commit, particularly one from Florida. We could get Johnson, especially if Jones decommits or can't qualify academically.

So then would you rather have Johnson or Jones then??

I'd rather have Jones. I've always said that geographic location is meaningless to me, except as a tiebreaker when the players are otherwise the same. In my amateur opinion, they seem to be of pretty similar quality. Thus, I'd take Jones because he's the hometown kid. In reality, I'd take either in a heartbeat, or preferably both.

per Sid:

• Everett Williams, a two-star linebacker from Mansfield (Texas) Legacy, recently became the seventh commitment for the Class of 2014 for Jerry Kill and the Gophers. But Williams is not only a standout player. In a recent interview with GopherHole.com, he said he’s carrying a 3.9 GPA and scored 1,490 on his SAT.

per Sid:

• The Gophers football team continues to bring in outstanding recruits for official visits. The top recruits don’t take official visits unless they are interested in the coach who has visited them and have genuine interest in the school. Watching the Gophers last Saturday were highly touted recruits such as running backs Deron Thompson of Wichita (Kan.) Northwest, Trevon Walters of Bradenton (Fla.) Manatee; cornerback Lamont Simmons from Jacksonville (Fla.) Raines, defensive tackle Gary Moore from Mobile (Ala.) Murphy and wide receiver Kendrick Holland from Winter Haven, Fla.

• Fun news for a future Gophers football player: Andrew Stelter, a defensive end from Owatonna, Minn., was recently named homecoming king. “I was just thinking, ‘Did this really happen?’ I just kind of looked down and smiled,” Stelter told the Owatonna People’s Press. Stelter has 2.5 sacks this season and Owatonna is 5-0.

The Bolded were NOT in attendance - D'Ernest Johnson & JC Jackson were though.

"Shawnee Mission West senior Andre Maloney was taken from the field at SM South District Stadium by ambulance Thursday during the second quarter of a 37-34 loss against Leavenworth.

Maloney had just scored on a long touchdown pass when he became disoriented on the sideline.

Vikings athletic director Don Perkins said because Maloney was not tackled on the play, the cause of Maloney’s distress wasn’t immediately known.

'He was pretty much untouched, so I don’t think anybody would say it happened on the play,' Perkins said."

Maloney is a soft commit to Kansas and is scheduled for an official with the Gophers for the October 26 game vs. Nebraska.

Turns out Maloney had a stroke. Very scary. He had surgery this morning and is in intensive care. Prayers go out to that young man and his family.

He passed away today. Pretty good athlete.
