Kevin Whaley shows great fight -- with police officers

I've never claimed to be an "expert" to use your word...just a passionate fan of all sports, like many others...and heck, anyone can write...my favorite Twins writer, Aaron Gleeman, is self-made...he created his own blog, has many loyal followers, and has parlayed that into lots of success...upchurch, if you want, create your own blog.

The dude on the PP Blog has a pretty nice inside story about a fan's memories with his father and what the axe game meant for him.
There are alot of things to write about for this game, but I know, let's dig up arrest reports from last november.

My observations about Doogie's blog:

a) I have been consistent with my take that Doogie dislikes coach Brewster. Iti s clear that he wants to hold Brewster to a different standard than coaches in Iowa City, Madison, Happy Valley, Lansing and Champaign. In fact, he wants to hold him to a different standard than any other program. Why? This happens everywhere.

b) Whaley is a kid that grew up in a very difficult area of the country. A crime ridden area in VA. His only hope for being successful is to get a college degree. A kid makes a mistake and Doogie wants Brewster to ship him home. Whaley deserves one mistake. He has been disciplined and ifhe doesn't heed the warning, he doesn't deserve a third chance.

c) Any suggestion that Brewster didn't suspend Whaley or kick him off the team because he would rather win is just dumb. Whaley is our third RB. He has like 5 carries this year. Brewster was quioted as saying that we need a RB if we are going to get better. Clearly he doesn't think Whaley is the guy. Why risk his job for someone that he doeosn't feel is going to be that great anyway?

d) I commend the U for being consistent in their discipline. If they treat a kid from Virginia Beach differently, they should be ashamed.

e) I don't think Doogie really thinks these incidents at the U are any different than any other university. He just wants people to think that it is worse here to make Brewster look bad. His KFAN buddies must be proud of him.

"kid makes a mistake"...I can accept mistakes, but when you strike a police officer, and wrestle with another one, that is too much....clearly, you believe that Brewster believes that Whaley isn't the guy...how do you draw that conclusion? I don't think we know on that yet...and keeping Whaley on the team is a group decision, not Brewster's alone...Maturi, and others, had a say in that decision.

I have a Q&A with the Wis. beat reporter from the Milwaukee Jour. Sent. coming...he's very insightful, reading a lot of his work...think I asked decent questions, so a scouting report on Saturday's opponent should be up by this time tomorrow....I am as curious as anyone else as to whether Wis. is for real...and if the Gophers can win the Axe for the 1st time since '03.

Do you SERIOUSLY think if he hit a police officer he would have gotten off like he did???? Those reports don't always tell the whole story, you should know that.

AGAIN, nobody cares about a wisconsin beat writer anymore, we care more that you never come on here again. Just quit acting like you are a Gopher fan, you are no better than Fat Pat, the fact that you are on this board tells me the GH Mods have other motives in mind, I'm just not sure what they are at this point.

IIRC Doogie has been clear that he doesn't think the Gophers have any more problems than any other schools - I don't remember him ever saying that we're worse than anyone.

I think that if this blog post by Doogie had been preceded by a 'Gopher/Badger Preview' earlier in the week, people wouldn't be so up in arms about it. While I have no problem with the type of blog post Doogie has up re: Whaley, I do tend to agree that it would be nice to have more articles on both sides of the program (the good AND the bad).

I agree with the general tenor of critisicm but please note this what "WE" want.

The same thing happens to a Viking or a Hawkeye and we revel in it, pound our chests and demand retribution. If AP or Greenway did the same thing 85% of the board would be going postal demanding punishent. If Clay did the same thing, that percetage goes up to 100%

Has anyone- media or here- shown any concern to how Whaley is doing scholastically?

PS I am not a lawyer but do know several police officers. They write those reports as severe as possible. Given the charge I doubt the incident was as severe as reported.

PPS Go over to the Smoking Gun and read some police reports for background. If the report is the only evidence, anyone charged with a crime would be convicted and punsihed severely.

You are 100% correct. Earlier this week, Gopherholers were tearing into Bielema about the situation with Lance Smith. Now we have a similar off-the-field incident and Gopherholers are blasting the media for reporting it and even making excuses for Whaley. Can't have it both ways, folks.

You're right, he is very insightful. You aren't. Just keep plagiarizing insightful people and maybe you can fool some gopherholers that you are also insightful. Although, I think you're fooling less and less people these days. Also, I would love to see an article on Dubay's arrests, since they're so fascinating years later. It was shameful the way he represented your former employer KFAN.

Seriously, this kind of personal attack says far more about you than it does about Doogie.

If Old Gopher wants to refer to Doogie as "toe-headed" and "a bad lay" how is that any different than in Doogie's articles when he makes these seperate comments:

1) "At least these "U" athletes (student-athletes makes me chuckle) weren't fighting amongst themselves"

--- So now Doogie is taking a shot at their academic prowess without actually having a clue to what the truth is, just assuming they are bad students. Classy, I'm sure the kids appreciate that dig.

2) LB "Hacksaw" Gary Tinsley

--- I'm sure Gary really appreciates Doogie giving him the nickname "Hacksaw" that will follow him around the U until he graduates. What if his waving of the board was for no other reason than to get one group back inside and thus keep his guys from getting in trouble??? Who knows, Doogie sure as hell doesn't know the truth. Nice nickname for a 20 yr old kid though

Urban Meyer at Florida has had I believe 24 players arrested since he took over as a reference.

You've posted this many times and no one cares. Your writing sucks. No one is curious, and I'm sure most of the posters on here are much more knowledgeable than some crappy beat reporter like yourself.

If you are a decent writer you can say one thing and imply another. Doogie has not been up front about his dislike for Brewster and his writing shows it. You don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to look behind the words.

Similar incident? Hmmm.

I have Twins work Saturday with the game time change, but have the DVR set-up to record, and will write up thoughts after watching

Oh boy! Gopherhole has been blessed.

I believe Van DeSteeg also wrestled with police. Is this because Whaley is black with dreadlocks? Where was the story on Willie? Brewster told Bob Griese that they are a good RB from being a very good team. What does that mean to you?

Finally, Maturi was quoted as saying he was happy to see Brewster susopend McKinley and Dandridge. He said he liked how Brewster handled the situation. Maturi may help in the decisions but clearly Brewster is held accountable for the students actions.

Another 17 page thread bitching about the Twin Cities media. Its ironic that posters complain on here that they want coverage of the games, yet what topic is the most popular to discuss? It ain't the games.

Thank you closeted member of the Twin Cities media.

can we please quit calling football players "thugs" and "hoodlums"?

if doogie has guts, he would write a similar piece on Jeff Dubay. I challenge doogie to do that on gh. rip a sports media member equally to how you ripped whaley. if not, why not?

Why be negative?

The one thing I hate about negative reporting is I really think it can have an affect on recruiting. Local recruits hear/read/see it, and opposing coaching can show it to potential recruits as a negative recruiting tool. One of the things I’m always hearing the KFAN personalities say is that it isn’t there job to promote the Gopher program so they report the news as they see it. I’m fine with that because I agree, it isn’t there job. However, it’s not there job to put down the program either, yet that is done over and over (not just by KFAN either). So my question is why does it occur with so much frequency?

Does this type of reporting create better ratings and sell more newspapers? If it does, than all bets are off. It’s our own fault for lining their pockets every time they ridicule the program. If it doesn’t affect the ratings or newspaper sales at all, then why do it? If you’re going to claim that it isn’t your job to promote the program, and negative reporting isn’t self fulfilling, then why is it so common around here? That’s the question that I’ve never gotten a straight answer on.

You want to take a stab at it Doogie? Can you provide any comments on this? I’m not trying to put you on the spot or anything like that. I really am curious why this tactic is so routinely used. I don’t hold the same amount of venom towards you as many posters here, but I have noticed that your blogs many times contain negativity that I sometimes feel is unnecessary. I would appreciate any insight you could provide here. I really am interested to hear what is at the root of this. Does bashing the Gopher program truly create more ratings? I would hope not, but it’s the only way I can explain it.

Oh, and one more thing...The Badgers suck!

skiumah, Doogie is not about to take a stab at it. He's only interested in flaming to increase his "hits" on his "stories". That strategy is great and should work for a few more months. Then you may find him at SA or if he's lucky Holiday.

Am I the only one missing the relevance of this, now? Why is this new now?

Go ahead and report in incidents that happen when they happen. Doing this now only calls in to question the actual motivations of this "reporting".

Doogie,

We have never met personally but I have always enjoyed your loyalty to the UNiversity and I backed you on TGR when you had that disagreement with ZJ. But this is stupid and reeks of you selling out. Everything that needs to be said has been said but you continue to burn bridges everywhere you go. This is a monster game and you fall right in line with PA, Reusse, Barrero, and others in the Twin Cities media that find ways to portray the Gophers in a bad manner. Who gives a rip about this now? Its a year old, do some journalism and find the story when it happens and right about then....but a couple of days before the biggest game in Brews tenure and your writing this crap! You know what the media culture is like in Minnesota and you know that writing these articles affects the publics perception of the team and also causes a distraction. We need Kevin on Saturday and we need the team at 100%. Use your knowledge of the program to write about something interesting involving the team so that casual fans can get more aquainted with the program. Youre lucky enough to be in a position to do it, instead you try to buddy up with your friend fatpat. I have lost any respect I had with you.

The sad part is that negative stories don't need to be covered up, it is just the cynical hating attitude that gets injected with the story to go along with an incredible lack of reporting positive progress. I believe the media has a belief that the public is only interested in the negative. If that is true, why is there always a crying out for something positive especially when most people realize there is a whole lot of good to be reported.
