Kevin Whaley shows great fight -- with police officers

I personally have no problem with these stories being in the paper, I would just appreciate it if they covered the games too. A Gopher story on C6 every other day until the police are involved isn't getting it done for me. If there are so many people following the team that these stories involving the police are important, wouldn't the same people want to know about the upcoming game? I guess not...

The Strib's Gopher coverage is akin to what you would find if you were looking for news on an upcoming movie at perezhilton.com

Amazing how our own media goes out of its way to sabotage our own Gophers on the most important weekend of the year. I expect nothing less from these tools.

Gophers sabotaged themselves, my friend.

But it does expose his slant, and for that he's fully responsible. He is responsible for the tact, the angle he takes on a story and there can be no doubt with which way he chose to run. He's making the news just as well as reporting it. If he wants to be controversial and negative then he should reap the rewards of his efforts, and that is to alienate the gopher fan base and a big warm fuzzy bear hug from his mama ruesse.

There are a myriad of story possibilities. Their choces tell their goals. Dredging old news, and the pattern of contempt they've displayed in coopting ruesse's personal vendetta is transparent and they deserve all the heat they generate.

Get the fuc& off the board you troll, nobody cares what you have to say.

BTW, I just read the article, sounded completely juvenile. Almost like the little kid in elementary school taddling on a classmate with totally weak (one year old) imformation. How pathetic, taking some of the snide shots he took at the players, sad actually. Can we dismiss Doogie of his duties on this board?? Not sure what value you were looking for him to add but lets just end the experiment and save yourself some costs.

In the end, none of this matters. Whaley's playing. McKinley and Dandridge will miss the next two games. Tinsley got a minor consumption (oh no!). Let's play football and beat the badgers!

Seriously, all this holier than thou crap is coming from a student population that has rioted THREE times in the past seven years. Every single one of those students (including myself) was just as destructive as these young men. Either we root for the Gophers or we don't. I'm going to cheer on whoever the NCAA and Coach Brewster/Joel Maturi deem eligible to play. All this other crap is nothing but a reason to expose opinions that you have locked away in your psyche.

You call a poster names and swear at them, and then go on to chide someone for being 'juvenile' and being a 'little kid in elementary school.'

Hi pot, meet kettle!!

A well known poster here was banned because he faked his own death in a car crash last year, thus the only way to be shown the door here is to fake your own death.

Seriously Doogie, you've had five full days to write a piece and the only thing you could be bothered with? How about an article on Eggen, Parish and Epping covering our new found inroads to Wisconsin recruiting and the recruits reactions/thoughts on this weeks big game? How about a story about how the Gophers are now the hottest ticket in town with Wisconsin fans paying $400+ a ticket a full week before the game? How about a story profiling Eric Decker and the Sen for class' last chance to get a win against Wisconsin and what it would mean to them? I can think of a dozen interesting stories for rivalry week that don't read like a Reusse hate column. Perhaps if you had posted something not intended to embarrass the program earlier in the week, this negative, lazy article would have been balanced out a little...but you didn't.

I finally saw Goodfellas last night......Now I get the avatar and quote.

What bothers me, Doogie, about you, Reusse and the other sports "experts" is your total lack of humility. Souhan is a pompous ass who claims to know everything about sports. Sid is Mister Black and White, a genius in his own mind. We need someone like Dick Cullum back on the sports beat.

Doogie, you wonder how is Whaley still on the team? I wonder how in hell you are still writing.

I'm a little late to the party, but why is this coming out now? If it happened a year ago, why is the media pouncing? Was he just charged or what? Is it somehow related to the Tinsley or Dandridge/McKinley incidents?
Anyone? Was all quiet until Whaley took the field, then the media started to do a little digging?

The media members story idea came from someone else, was simply following that lead...will see PA today at Winter Park...he's a big brother to me in many ways, has a giant heart, will ask for you...as for being a fan, it's my school, I somehow graduated from there, so I do like to see the teams do well, but also don't appreciate when an athlete represents my school in a manner like that last November...that was some extreme stuff...I can look past some stuff, but that is way over-the-top.

Doogie is just here to flame, everyone. I've called him out multiple times, and he never has an honest answer. The sooner you ignore him, the sooner he's working at TGI fridays. By the way Doogie, did you have the same holier than thou response to Dubay's brushes with the law? No no no, he was just the victim, I remember you having his back. I don't condone these kids behavior, but at least they're kids. Also, you basically lifted the entire article from other people's quotes from here and GI.com. So not only are you a gigantic flamer, you are also a plagiarist! Wow, great job employing this loser gopherhole!

You are just as confused as everyone else. Media couldn't do their job a year ago, heard word Whaley got in a fight last Novemeber, and now try throwing in their paper to try to start some fire 2 days before Wisco game. Just classy stuff, you can thank a "member" of our board for getting it going (and also mocking our players and giving them disparaging nicknames in his blog, that was cool too).

"4th degree assault is pretty tame....just ask Willie Van De Steeg (not ripping him, he was a great player...but he also got into a bar fight and was forgiven with open arms)."

Willie was also a Captain and Senior-to-be who'd been All Big-10, not just some Freshman people have never heard of but who's counting?

"I personally have no problem with these stories being in the paper, I would just appreciate it if they covered the games too. Precisely my point. I'm not saying you can't cover a real story if it's negative but the fact is dozens of interesting stories leading up to the biggest game in years (In my mind) were ignored. As I said before...Low lying fruit, the story had already been written for him here on the posting forums.

"I finally saw Goodfellas last night......Now I get the avatar and quote."

"Well Ma, how do I look?"

Whoa. Doogie quoted a 'Holer in his blog:

I've been a fan of Doogie's participation on this site, but this is unacceptable. I'll sleep on it tonight, but my initial thought is I'm done here until this is addressed or he is no longer affiliated with GopherHole.

This board is not a source of quotes for use in the Strib.

Oh settle down man. Who cares if this board was quoted. The more pub the better.

So if you swear you are acting juvenile

This just in........... if you use a swearword you are acting like a child  God, you must be a treat to hang out with. That was a cute little line though, hi pot meet kettle, you're an original fella

From past posts I see that you would love to hand out free blow jobs to everyone at KFAN (and obviously those previously affiliated with KFAN) so lets just get it out there........... you will defend Doogie and KFAN to the grave, we got it, now turn on PA and get the lotion out.

I will abide by Monk's wishes so I won't respond to your classless drivel. Let me know when you want to grow up and stay on the topic.

It took them a year to find the story and about ten minutes to have three different columnists write about it. I'm expecting a great story coming up as soon as they figure out we're 3-1, 1-0 going into a game with our biggest rival. Who wants to be the one to out that story??

I'd be curious to know how the PP handled the Whaley situation. Anybody read that paper?

What bothers me!

Doogie mentioned that some people were wondering why Whaley was still on the team. Is getting wins becoming more important then disciplining kids? Coaches today just don't discipline kids like they did in the past. MN obviously is not the only team. Iowa it seems like has had incidents every week, but hey they are 4-0!

I know the other side says if we kick them off the team a lot of these kids will go back on the streets and get involved in gangs. This might be the only chance they get in becoming a productive citizen.

Bottom line: being a college football coach and having 105 players to watch over has got to be one of the toughest jobs in America.

Let's be honest, there is a reason Doogie doesn't have a job. If he was talented, someone would beg him to work for them, even in this economy. Maybe some tabloid mag will hire ya...that is the type of material I see Doogie talented in "investigating a lead" with.

Classic TC media, no coverage on the big game.........until something negative pops up.

I too will not be donating to GH if Doogie is allowed to write on here. Good bye. It's nice to have choices.

Holy crap Doogie,
look, this is disturbing, it shouldn't sit right with anyone, but... good lord, is digging up dirt and smearing the U the only angle that the TC media has. I mean EVERYONE is sucking up to pain pill farve and the loveboat vikings like escaping a pitiful loss to the 49ers is the greatest sports event in human history, I haven't seen one TV story about the axe game, first big ten game in the new stadium, but we REALLY need to go over the Twins last gasp of air before another dissapointing finish to the season. And yet, a front page story needs to be ran about an incident a college freshman had last year, granted again a disturbing one, but guess what he didn't play last year, even though we had serious problems running the ball, it's obvious he was suspended for the year, and made to take a RS.
I get that the mantre of local media is "Report negatives, take devil's avocate viewpoints, never admit you were wrong, and claim anyone that reports positivity, a "homer", but this is just stupid.
Prove me wrong, let's see a story of depth, incite, or unique storylines about the Axe game, let the cops and the university deal with the incidents, throw Whaley, Tinsley, Mckinley off the team if they need to, suspend WVS last year and strip his captainship away if they need to. Leave that stuff to them, because regardless of how many ins you have, you don't know the details,
you haven't sat down with any of these players and ask them about this stuff. You don't know how pissed coach Brew was, or Maturi, because you weren't in the room when they confronted the kids.

I think everyone should think about this seriously......... your contributions will go to putting some $$$ in the pocket of someone who, during the biggest week for Gopher football, would rather try to smear the team with year old information rather than writing something more constructive about the game itself. Pathetic.

My observations about Doogie's blog:

a) I have been consistent with my take that Doogie dislikes coach Brewster. Iti s clear that he wants to hold Brewster to a different standard than coaches in Iowa City, Madison, Happy Valley, Lansing and Champaign. In fact, he wants to hold him to a different standard than any other program. Why? This happens everywhere.

b) Whaley is a kid that grew up in a very difficult area of the country. A crime ridden area in VA. His only hope for being successful is to get a college degree. A kid makes a mistake and Doogie wants Brewster to ship him home. Whaley deserves one mistake. He has been disciplined and ifhe doesn't heed the warning, he doesn't deserve a third chance.

c) Any suggestion that Brewster didn't suspend Whaley or kick him off the team because he would rather win is just dumb. Whaley is our third RB. He has like 5 carries this year. Brewster was quioted as saying that we need a RB if we are going to get better. Clearly he doesn't think Whaley is the guy. Why risk his job for someone that he doeosn't feel is going to be that great anyway?

d) I commend the U for being consistent in their discipline. If they treat a kid from Virginia Beach differently, they should be ashamed.

e) I don't think Doogie really thinks these incidents at the U are any different than any other university. He just wants people to think that it is worse here to make Brewster look bad. His KFAN buddies must be proud of him.

I'm with you. I joined this board because 95% of the people who posted on here were here to support the program. It was refreshing to get some perspectives from people who thought the glass was half full.

This amateur bullsh-- from Doogie is absurd. I have no problem with people being critical, but when you have to bring up an incident that occured a year ago, 2 days before a rivalry game, I think you're crossing the line. I think Doogie wrote this article to get noticed. He realized that writing about Brewster's contract extension was getting old so he went a different route to be critical.

Overall, just a terribly written article with nothing positive to say about the program.

All teams have incidents and they are handled by the head coaches in the best way they see fit. They are all trying to balance winning, giving generally good kids second chances and not having bad kids around. It is not easy. The holier then thou attitude that some take regarding the way one coach does things, only to see that he is really just like everyone else is a bit much to take. The coaches have to make tough decisions and they are going to be second guessed no matter what. Punky is no different then anyone else.

I hate the holier then thou crap. I have more then my fill of it on the Badger Basketball board.

It's not Doogie's fault Gopher players are ending up in the police blotter.

Exactly. I'm starting to realize this team is full of a bunch of hoodlums and it's very irritating indeed. The players involved in all of these incidents have this coming.... Brewster needs to start recruiting better student athletes.

I agree with the general tenor of critisicm but please note this what "WE" want.

The same thing happens to a Viking or a Hawkeye and we revel in it, pound our chests and demand retribution. If AP or Greenway did the same thing 85% of the board would be going postal demanding punishent. If Clay did the same thing, that percetage goes up to 100%

Has anyone- media or here- shown any concern to how Whaley is doing scholastically?

PS I am not a lawyer but do know several police officers. They write those reports as severe as possible. Given the charge I doubt the incident was as severe as reported.

PPS Go over to the Smoking Gun and read some police reports for background. If the report is the only evidence, anyone charged with a crime would be convicted and punsihed severely.

I've never claimed to be an "expert" to use your word...just a passionate fan of all sports, like many others...and heck, anyone can write...my favorite Twins writer, Aaron Gleeman, is self-made...he created his own blog, has many loyal followers, and has parlayed that into lots of success...upchurch, if you want, create your own blog.

How come they never stock sugarless gum in the vending machine?
Seriously, who still chews gum with sugar? Big League Chew aside...that stuff rocks!
