Kevin Whaley shows great fight -- with police officers

The sad part is that negative stories don't need to be covered up, it is just the cynical hating attitude that gets injected with the story to go along with an incredible lack of reporting positive progress. I believe the media has a belief that the public is only interested in the negative. If that is true, why is there always a crying out for something positive especially when most people realize there is a whole lot of good to be reported.
I think your post shows that I didn't get my point across very well. I realize that negative incidents need to be reported. My point is why the put downs, sarcasm, and jokes at the programs expense. If you don't want to promote the program, that's fine, but why do you have to rip on it? :(

I know it is a little shallow of me,and I hope this is not offensive to you, but to be honest I have not read all 5 pages of comments by the variety of posters so my comment should not be taken as a statement of your ability to articulate an argument. :) I usually just respond to the original posts, if one catches my eye or I am truly into a debate. Trying to read all the threads and perspectives can be a little much for me and requires a little more time than I can usually give.

Brewster told Bob Griese that they are a good RB from being a very good team. What does that mean to you?

To me, that means that Brewster doesn't think he has a good RB on his roster.

The media members story idea came from someone else, was simply following that lead...will see PA today at Winter Park...he's a big brother to me in many ways, has a giant heart, will ask for you...as for being a fan, it's my school, I somehow graduated from there, so I do like to see the teams do well, but also don't appreciate when an athlete represents my school in a manner like that last November...that was some extreme stuff...I can look past some stuff, but that is way over-the-top.
As an alum from the U myself I don't appreciate our local journalists, especially U grads, coming across as 2nd rate punks that would have failed out of RCC. You claim to post equally postive and negative articles, yet most are still rhetoric and 2nd hand information. What ever happened to true journalism? Go out and get a story that represents the U as to how you think they should be represented, instead you come across as a bitter tool who is trying to impress Mr. Reusse.

Your style may be best suited for radio where people are not able to go back and view your work and say 'Did that jack-ss actually say that?'.

Since Doogie has a tough time finding timely information for his stories, maybe I can offer some help for him for his future blog posts.

* Will Lou Holtz stay at Minnesota, or will he leave for Notre Dame?
* New movie review: Smith of Minnesota.
* Sandy Stephens at quarterback? Can his type succeed at the position?
* Giving a legacy like Marion Barber III a scholarship seems like a waste.

With a little bit of time and effort, you too can be a great blogger like Doogie!

if doogie has guts, he would write a similar piece on Jeff Dubay. I challenge doogie to do that on gh. rip a sports media member equally to how you ripped whaley. if not, why not?

Exactly what I was thinking. I guarantee you he stood tall, defended and tried to get his buddy help. But when it comes to a black athlete that looses his temper, has rage issues or whatever the reason it is kick he a-s out of here.

Maybe Doogie should write an article that Fat Pat should be fired because he eats so much food it steals from the poor and underprivledged children. How could Fat Pat eat so much when kids in N Minny are going hungry? To me it is worse to see a child go hungry than some kid loose his cool.

doogie - you are the "hack" in this case.....a two-bit, wanna be "hack" writer

how about you call KFAN for the 10,000th time since they fired you and see if they will give you your job back being dan burrito's personal whipping boy?

the way the sports media in this town (i am giving you quite a promotion doogie by calling you part of the "media") behaves like jackals when it comes to young kids is pathetic.

Money talks, right Doogie. I guess the only gopher news you could think this week. No class. Let the fat pat do his work. Like someone said, You are a sellout.

What does his race have to do with anything?

Doogie,

We have never met personally but I have always enjoyed your loyalty to the UNiversity and I backed you on TGR when you had that disagreement with ZJ. But this is stupid and reeks of you selling out. Everything that needs to be said has been said but you continue to burn bridges everywhere you go. This is a monster game and you fall right in line with PA, Reusse, Barrero, and others in the Twin Cities media that find ways to portray the Gophers in a bad manner. Who gives a rip about this now? Its a year old, do some journalism and find the story when it happens and right about then....but a couple of days before the biggest game in Brews tenure and your writing this crap! You know what the media culture is like in Minnesota and you know that writing these articles affects the publics perception of the team and also causes a distraction. We need Kevin on Saturday and we need the team at 100%. Use your knowledge of the program to write about something interesting involving the team so that casual fans can get more aquainted with the program. Youre lucky enough to be in a position to do it, instead you try to buddy up with your friend fatpat. I have lost any respect I had with you.

buckshotmike -- agree, it's as big a game as Brewster has had here, but it is news this week...the Tinsley incident has caused many media members to do some serious digging...and that's how the Whaley news was discovered...just a coincidence that it's married with Wisconsin week.

You've posted this many times and no one cares. Your writing sucks. No one is curious, and I'm sure most of the posters on here are much more knowledgeable than some crappy beat reporter like yourself.

A Q&A isn't much writing...it's about gleaning insight from a knowledgeable source...and everyone can be a journalist now, the media world has changed in many ways...by all means, create a blog and generate a ton of traffic.

the Tinsley incident has caused many media members to do some serious digging...and that's how the Whaley news was discovered

like getting year old info handed to you on a message board full of more knowledgeable sports people? Keep staying on top of issues

you havent answerd my question doogie

If Old Gopher wants to refer to Doogie as "toe-headed" and "a bad lay" how is that any different than in Doogie's articles when he makes these seperate comments:

1) "At least these "U" athletes (student-athletes makes me chuckle) weren't fighting amongst themselves"

--- So now Doogie is taking a shot at their academic prowess without actually having a clue to what the truth is, just assuming they are bad students. Classy, I'm sure the kids appreciate that dig.

2) LB "Hacksaw" Gary Tinsley

--- I'm sure Gary really appreciates Doogie giving him the nickname "Hacksaw" that will follow him around the U until he graduates. What if his waving of the board was for no other reason than to get one group back inside and thus keep his guys from getting in trouble??? Who knows, Doogie sure as hell doesn't know the truth. Nice nickname for a 20 yr old kid though

sonnygarcia -- your take is misconstrued...in no way is it a shot at their academic prowess, but let's be realistic: there are athletes present at all schools for one reason -- sports. Basketball players, from the conference tournament through the Final Four, might be in their houses/apartments a maximum of 5 days over the course of a month...maybe the better way to put = athlete-students.

Actually, it's a tip that a few reporters have been working on for a few weeks...initially, we heard it involved a macing incident, but that proved to be inaccurate, so it's a good thing nobody wrote that.

So what, there are plenty of pure students, such as yourself, who are as worthless academically as Tramaine Brock.

What was your question?

my question was why haven't you written an attempt at humorous piece about dubay? you write about sports in the strib as a media memember so why not write about a sports media member on gh? do it as a front page piece. use the police reports for fodder. you did it about a college kid who is a known name, so why not about a sports media personality who is a known name? dubay has given you more material to work with. if you arent going to write this I am curious why not? seems to be the type of thing that would be consistent and fair. or does the media just slam athletes and not themselves? i eagerly await the piece on dubay.

I call bullsh*t. Here is who broke the story:

http://www.forums.gopherhole.com/boards/showthread.php?t=8774&page=2

So who is goldygopherfb?

PS If you had a tip that he got arrested then you spend several hours going through arrest records. Hardly rocket science but good journalism that most don't want to do.

I'm so sick of people bitching about the entire 'student-athlete' scenario...especially fans of the sport. The only reason they get preferential treatment is because of the money that comes in generated from fan interest. Also, Doogie is just being naive about the racial components in this story. Not calling anyone out, but this would be a different story if we were talking about a couple good ol' boy wrestlers.

It's too bad the Gopher Holers griping that this isn't news because it happened a year ago weren't employed by Nixon during Watergate. Tricky Dick could've been President until '76 with that spin.

"goldygopherfb" was just another name the "blarneys" dude was using (99% sure), hes been putting up comments on Whaley for a while. Would be very curious to know what kind of connection he has to this whole deal.

Not calling anyone out, but my name is listed? ... Still confused about what race has to do with this.

Look at the bright side, he could have called Whaley a mental midget when he hadn't done anything wrong.

Well...now we know why Whaley was not playing the first 2 or 3 games (can't remember if he was in the Cal game).

BTW - Not trying to excuse the behavior, but the media does seem to hype up the issues with the student athletes a little to much IMO and not trying to be condescending, but they are kids, many of whom are away from home and are testing their limits...it goes a little with the territory while they grow up. It would be so nice if the MN media did not make the UofM athletes into some sort of national tragedy so that the U will end up being the whipping post for liberals who are trying to change others because they cannot change themselves.
