Fire Ben Johnson

was it DEI or was DEI a bonus on top of hiring a cheap coach who played here and was an assistant here for a sport the university doesn't care about that some local people would maybe be on board with? he is and was an awful hire but there were multiple reasons his name even came up in the first place and it wasn't like we just made a list of any Black coaches in the country and started from there.
Whether it was or not is conjecture, but there’s no doubt there was tremendous pressure to make such a hire. Souhan had just written an article in the Strib about Coyle needing to diversify his hiring, and another article came out just before, which stated that it had been 14 years since the gophers hired a black head coach in any sport. All that going on during the hiring process - I think most observers knew what that would lead to. Either way, I just want our next coach to be the best one available - I couldn’t care less about the rest.
Here’s Souhan’s article: https://www.startribune.com/if-not-...ime-to-diversify-gophers-leadership/600036010

Welcome Hanson 22, Ben is a good dude and I hope he is able turn this season around with the remaining conference games. Then we do not need to worry about hiring a new coach for men’s bball. Mich tomorrow night on a chilly MN night.

If we fire Ben mid season, can’t the players enter the portal?

Could Cole be worried we wouldn’t be able to field a team?

That would be pretty awesome!

Think of all the time we would have!

This thread wonders why it’s not four years old!
Might as well be. Dozens of "fire Ben" related threads have been going on for a while, and there will be likely 10+ new threads about the firing when it's all over with.

I'm sure there is a cut off, let's find that date and let go of Ben right after

My interest diminished through the RP seasons and I wrote Gopher basketball off entirely when Johnson was hired. Not sure where I am compared with an “average” alum that at one time loved to watch gopher basketball but I’m not coming back without some deep tourni runs - which can only happen w big money invested for years. Personally, I’d prefer they put all energy and resources into football.

Pretty sure a special 30 day window opens when a head coach leaves or is fired.

But wouldn't really matter in our case because most of the roster is in their final year of eligibility anyway. A guy like Asuma wouldn't want to leave, he would want to finish the year to get as much play on tape as he could prior to transferring (assuming that was what he decided to do).

I don't think Asuma decided to go the U of M because of Ben Johnson... I don't know if that's what you meant by your comment or not. I don't see him as the kind of kid that's actively going to look to transfer if Ben gets fired. Granted, he may get poached, but I don't think he'd initiate anything on his end.

I would gladly put on a uniform with a dozen retirees who know how to pass a ball, have dad bods and put on too many six packs on top of the old six pack to fill in for the NIL wannabee's Who is with me?

I know for a fact we’ll be able to shoot free throws better.

While that may be true....you have to get to the line and I am guessing D1 college basketball players will be able to defend this this fictional team fairly easily without fouling :)

Eight of them are out of eligibility anyways so not sure where they will be able to go. Although I'm curious if there's rules about being eligible with mid season transfers I feel like that would open the door for teams in contention for a bid to pick off starters on last place teams. I'm sure everyone would love to have Dawson and most teams could probably use Mike Mitchell shooting off the bench or Parker energy as a 10-12 minute glue guy.
