Brohm leaving?

Is Purdue going to be able to hire anyone at the level of Rhule and Fickell?

They have B1G $$$ coming their way, all the same, to pay someone.

Jim Leonhard??? :devilish:

brohm still drives a 20 year old or so honda, they bring it up all the time

he's either frugal or gambles all of his money and cant afford new car

I can see that. A lot of people view cars as purely utilitarian (unbelievable in my mind). Sam Walton (Walmart founder) drove an old Ford pickup until he couldn't drive any more. I employ a semi-retired guy who definitely doesn't need the money (enjoys working part time still) but drives a 2000s Honda Accord. I have a new vehicle but my daily around-town car is a 10-year VW Golf stick shift - just cuz.

This is one of the reasons I didn't want Brohm at Minnesota when we were hiring, figuring he wouldn't stay. Also didn't want him because I didn't think the offense he ran would be good for Minnesota and Minnesota's climate. Lastly, he was kind of a spaz/hothead, although it looks like this year he changed his best this season regarding that, which was good to see.

I think people are making more of this than what is there. Brohm has always had eyes on Louisville, understandably. The only reason he didn't go in 2018 was he didn't think it would be right to bail on Purdue after one year. He's a good coach and brought Purdue out of some really ugly times. Odds are that program takes a bit of a dip unless they can hit another home run on this next hire.

Cars are complete sunk cost, and should be driven into the ground until they become unreliable for their primary use. Whether you can buy whatever you want, or are always in the used car market, paying a pile of money for a status symbol with no return makes no sense. I drive a 2007 Chevy, and hope for another five years, but no guarantees. Cheers to the wealthy (and anyone else) who don't waste their money on what they don't need and won't get any return on.

Vehicles IMO are one of the biggest things that keep poor people poor. It's none of my business, but I can't believe how many lower-middle class people drive $50k+ vehicles.

This would be one of the first "going home" / kinda step downs that turns out to be true.

Saban to Kent St. next!?!!??

Nothing wrong said here, but Fleck has gotten the better of Brohm. 4-2 I think?

That 2020 game should've been a win for them, sorry but true. Refs took the TD away
They also gave Purdue a gift pass interference that kept that drive going in the first place, so not really.
exactly, it's as if they forget the horrible PI they got that set up a TD. Had they not gotten that ridiculous call, the push off is a non factor

I’ve always said I think Brohm is a great coach and Purdue was lucky to have him.
I’ve also said I think Fleck is a better fit for Minnesota and I’d rather have fleck than Brohm.

Brohm is a little more feast or famine which as annoyed with people are with fleck I think plays worse in a pro market.
Brohm would’ve been maybe fired in this market after a 4-8 2019 in year 3.

7-6
6-7
4-8
2-4
9-4
8-5 (won west and left program)

Or

5-7
7-6
11-2
3-4
9-4
8-4 (to this point hasn’t left program)

I’m not sure I would trade the last 6 years of Brohm for the last 6 years of fleck. I would trade this year.
They’re both good coaches. It’s good for the gophers he is leaving. It’ll be good for Minnesota if fleck stays

PU should be able to hire a qualified coach. Seems like there are a good number out there looking.

I believe his current contracts included $1,250/month for car allowance

He makes more than $6 million per year in salary?

The details from his latest extension are somewhat difficult to find. I think his base was 5.1 million this year, but he has a number of retention bonuses and incentives that push him well over 6 million per year.

I also found this:

Brohm signed an extension that runs through 2027 and is worth about $6.7M/year in April. While I can’t find how much it’d cost Purdue to fire Brohm, that’s an unlikely scenario — Brohm is a well-regarded coach who’s led the Boilermakers to two winning Big Ten records over the last four seasons, something they don’t take for granted in West Lafayette.

The worrisome figure from Purdue’s end is Brohm’s measly $1M buyout if he leaves for another job. He turned down his alma mater, Louisville, in 2018; he may find it difficult to do that twice. Still, Purdue has a coveted coach on a reasonable contract. Even if it required some concessions, that’s a big win for them.

BROHM'S GUARANTEED COMPENSATION AT PURDUE

2023:
$5.2 million

2024: $5.8 million (includes longevity bonus)

2025: $5.4 million

2026: $6.5 million (includes longevity bonus)

2027: $5.6 million

So, with bonuses, looks like he is owed about $28.5m over the next five years at PU.

I wouldn't say he took a pay cut, but he didn't get a big boost, either.

Rumblings I read said Purdue didn't bother to get in a bidding war because they knew it was a matter of time until Brohm left for Louisville. Just rumors.

I heard rumors that Purdue fans were frustrated with their coach as recently as early November.

This is probably the perfect time for both of them to split.

He got a west title, doesn’t have to rebuild. Purdue gets to hire from a position of strength and Brohm gets one of his dream jobs.
I just think the number of coaches who stay 12+ years at one school will continually get lower and lower.

Wrong, that was an arm extended off/PI flagged by 2 officials. If you saw the video not shown on the broadcast, you likely would agree…

Agree! This drives me nuts. They never show the angle where the TE extends his arm over Phil Howard's facemask, driving it down to his chest plate. Easy call for the ref standing right in front of it. The sideline angle from the press box doesn't show it at all. The view the ref had couldn't have been clearer.

Correct. Not always called but not a bad call.

Yep, he has gotten the better of Brohm…. which would mean more if they took over teams in the same situation when hired 🤷‍♂️

Yeah for sure.

Brohm inherited David Blaugh, who had thrown for 3300 yards and 25 TDs the season before.

PJ inherited Connor Rhoda, who he had to beg out of retirement. And, Demry Croft. And, about 3 offensive linemen with experience. Most of his returning secondary was kicked out of school.

People want to look at the 9-4 record without considering the context though.

It is pretty funny that many people who want to always point to context of things refuse to look at context other than the context that fits their narrative.

Purdue definitely a tougher station to walk into I think. But they are closer to each other than many want to think.

Noted earlier or in another post that Brohm generally did not look happy while coaching. Guess I'll have to watch some Louisville ball to see if the wayward son has finally found happiness at home.

Yep, that tells the whole story 🙄
Why does it hurt Gopher fans so much to admit Brohm has accomplished more than PJ? Lots of coaches have 🤷‍♂️

I'd take our #10 ranking 2019 season over this year's Purdue accomplishments.
I'd give a slight edge to PJ but it really could be a toss up depending on what you value in terms of success. I know we'll disagree about it but that's fine.
