I remember reading a quote from Sandy that UW never contacted him last spring and summer when he burst onto the scene. I believe he also said that he would be interested if UW did show some interest.

When UW was recruiting last summer, they had (maybe) one scholarship open for the 2014 class and it was being held for Kevon Looney, who chose UCLA this past fall. Since then, George Marshall and Evan Anderson have left the program, which obviously gives the UW staff room to pursue another 2014 prospect. If it was up to me, I would like to see UW make a push for Cohen, as they could really use a bigger wing. I think it would also be nice to add another recruit in 2014 to balance out the scholarships, otherwise the 2015 group could be a really big class (maybe up to 6). Unfortunately, I don't think the UW staff cares what I think, so who knows what will transpire if Cohen eventually asks for and gets his release.

I don't know how releases from a LOI work or if they're similar to regular transfers, but I would not be surprised to see MU restrict Sandy from going to UW if they are able to do that. Transfers from MU are routinely restricted from going to UW and vice versa. Beyond that, I don't know if academics are still a concern with Cohen, but if they are, I would expect UW to pass. If UW does decide to pursue him, I would like to believe that they have a very good chance to land him. Sounds like Sandy would prefer to stay close home, which would certainly help the Badgers, but I guess we'll have to wait and see what comes of the MU coaching search and then wait for a decision from Cohen.

I am unsure, but can't a team (Marquette) only restrict players from going to other teams within their conference, so the Big East. Or am I wrong?

Pretty sure they can do what they want after he signs the LOI. They could refuse to release him, which is a bad PR move. They can release him outright, or they can release him with restrictions.

Generally teams restrict players from going to another team that they will play against, but that isn't a rule. They can make as many restrictions as they want, although the more they make, the more negative attention they bring to themselves. Remember the backlash when Bo put ridiculous restrictions on Uthoff?

Then I think UW would be out since they play MU every year.

So you can release with restrictions?

Not sure, but I would imagine so. They technically don't even have to let them out of their LOI, so I don't see what's to stop them from saying, "We'll give you your release, but only if you stay away from these schools."

"He's excited about going to Marquette," Murphy said. "But we have to be sure that the new coach is excited to have him and it's a situation where it's good for him."

That quote worries me a bit.

Sounds like he is able to talk to other schools in the interim though, since he asked for his release. Hopefully Pitino can convince him to come to Minnesota.

He's just keeping his options open. No need to eliminate MU until the coach is named. I like MN's chances.

Murphy lied to cover up the situation in that quote. Sandy has asked to be released from his LOI in MU and he is not simply "excited about going to Marquette". He is trying to open up his recruitment as soon as he gets released and survey his options.

After watching that highlight film I like him again. I posted that he didn't impress me in the games I saw him in action this past winter. Maybe they were off nights, and maybe I'm buying into the "highlight reel" too much. For what it's worth, there is only one breakaway dunk from the games I attended so he obviously put some impressive footage in his other outings. I like him.

This is a prime example why coaches need to handle being "rejected" by recruits with class. You never know when you might get another shot! The whole Vaughn/ISU assistant coach debacle comes to mind. I would assume most coaches handle it well and wish the kid the best of luck, but you never know. I really hope we can land Cohen! Cohen and Piper on the wings would be exciting to watch in the future.

So true. Around 35% of D1 basketball players end up transferring anyway so never burn a bridge.

After watching his highlight video, I am a little concerned if he can dunk.

I think Cohen is better suited to run up and down the court then to hold the ball for 30 seconds and shoot a 3.

The Gophers adjusted tempo was 64.9 possessions per game, 251st in the country. Wisconsin's was 64.2, 276th. The difference is minimal.

The Gopher's were starting fresh with a new coach and new system. The grinch has been the same place since max was a puppy. The difference is maximal.

There's a sample size of one year in which his team was starting fresh with a new coach and a new system and his team was the 48th fastest team in the country. There's also a sample size of one year in which his team was starting fresh with a new coach and a new system and his team was the 251st fastest team in the country.

All of this is probably irrelevant to the question of Sandy Cohen's recruitment. But given that there's no more data to suggest that he's gonna play a very uptempo style than that he won't, and given that the data suggesting he won't is from his current program in his current conference, I'd say at the least the jury is still out.

Worth noting that Bo Ryan pressed all game while he was at Wisconsin-Platteville. I just did some quick googling and here were the 5 highest scoring teams during Ryan's time at Platteville: 97.4 86.3, 85.2, 85.0, and 84.0 ppg. It's almost as though he adjusted his approach to different team and league conditions.

I think it's assumed that because Pitino is his father's son he'll play an uptempo system. But unfortunately Sr has access to better quality athletes relative to his league than Jr does. Also worth noting that Richard worked for Donovan who in turn also worked for Rick, and Donovan's team was only the 320th fastest this year with elite athletes.

That's funny, I also did some quick googling and found out that Wisconsin still sucks.

This is true, however if you look deeper you will see that the Gophers' average offensive possession lasted 18.1 seconds, ranking 183rd in the country while Wisconsin's was 20.3 seconds, ranking 338th. That difference is significant. Sort of like how Florida looks like a slow paced team if you only look at average possessions, but in reality that's because their defense is so good teams take forever to get shots while their offense is actually faster than average. I am not comparing the Gophers to Florida.

Anyone know how Cohen did against top tier competition or in AAU ball? That highlight video is basically him against a bunch of little kids/non-athletes, he's on a completely different level.

Had ups and downs, but showed promise, and made the most of things next to a guy who commands the ball all the time in Rashad Vaughn. He was real solid shooting-wise, and showed signs of good athleticism. Could attack more however and needs to reduce turnovers.

Here's an article from Cohen's first breakout weekend in the EYBL: http://collegebasketballtalk.nbcspo...s-break-out-performance-at-nike-eybl-hampton/

He had 24 against Tyus and Pulley that weekend to really put himself on the map. That 24 points was his high for the EYBL season, but he did play with Rashad who wasn't shy about putting up shots. Cohen averaged 9.3 ppg on 42% shooting. He hit 38.6% of his 3's and 76.9% of his free throws. In addition he averaged 4 rebounds per game and 2.4 assists per game. Those stats as well as per game stats can be found here: http://www.d1circuit.com/roster_players/2664473

I do remember Wally hitting six three's and scoring a bunch of points against a very good travel team (Atlanta Celtics, I think), so one big performance has to be taken with a grain of salt. Wally had some solid offers (Oklahoma State, West Virginia), but I think Cohen's offers were a bit more impressive (Marquette, Memphis lead the pack). I agree that it's tough to judge Cohen on that highlight tape other than the fact that he can jump and he handles the ball very well for a kid his size.
